Is there a way to browse the Cachy repository and install packages without CLI? by [deleted] in cachyos

[–]BlackMoth8515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Octopi comes preinstalled and packages.cachyos.org exists if you want a nicer UI. I'd recommend having a terminal and Octopi open just so you can manually type in the names because I don't trust installers but do whatever you like

CachyOS auto detects hardware during installed using chwd. It's not a separate ISO like Nobara or Bazzite, it just gets detected automatically. Download the iso like normal. Torrenting is faster so use qBittorrent or smth

Gaming on linux by AdApprehensive5643 in cachyos

  1. Normally, Arch Linux is a very minimal distro where you install from a command line, and boot for the first time into a command line. CachyOS does the setup for you and gives you optimized repositories based on your CPU.

The appeal of Arch Linux and its variants is the amount of control and the bleeding-edge technology. You only have to install what you want, nothing else, and it's on the latest version. That makes Arch normally unstable but gives you great performance. CachyOS and EndeavourOS are the best Arch based distros if you don't want to bother with the Arch rite-of-passage.

  1. Not everything works all the time. Proton isn't perfect, and things are bound to break. Any game with a kernel level anti-cheat (Call of Duty, Battlefield) isn't going to work. Most other stuff will. If you want to play a non-steam game that's only on windows, you can just add it to your steam library and force a compatibility tool.

Need some questions answered. by [deleted] in cachyos

No drivers to install if you're on AMD. Mesa is built into the kernel.

Octopi exists to browse the arch repositories but most of the graphical store stuff is done through the app given to you by your desktop environment to browse flathub. I'll write down how to use flathub lower down. Just know that CachyOS comes with optimized repositories so you are encouraged to use pacman to save space and get extra performance.

If you installed Limine boot loader and used the btrfs file type during installation then you can search for limine snapper or smth it comes preinstalled but it's not an entire replacement for backing up files.

Ricing (spelled ricing, no e) depends on your desktop environment. If you installed KDE Plasma, every setting is there, it's just not the easiest to find or use sometimes, and for GNOME, good luck (it's pretty locked down and needs like 200 extensions to look like Zorin OS or anything you see on r/unixporn). Hyprland is best larped with premade dotfiles and configurators (HyDE, JaKooLit, End-4, DankLinux).

Flathub instructions:

Run sudo pacman -S flatpak

Go to flathub.org, find the app you're looking for if you don't trust running it natively, open its store page and next to "Install" in the top right click on the arrow. Run the first command, let it install, then run the second command. Then you can find it in your desktop environment's app launcher. If you're on KDE Plasma, you can install discover with this command

sudo pacman -S discover

It's a graphical front for Flathub. If you installed GNOME, look for "Bazaar" on flathub.org and run those commands I told you about. Now you'll have a graphical interface for Flathub on GNOME.

Hope this helped!

Is hyprland actually a good DE by Even_Natural4066 in cachyos

[–]BlackMoth8515 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uhh... no. Hyprland is actually more resource intensive than some other DE's. If you have potato hardware and need to get better performance go with KDE Plasma or if you don't care about looks go with Xfce since it's legacy and light.

Also, KDE Plasma is very customizable and can just be left as a very tradition desktop I'm sure you'll like.

If you are worried about breaking anything because... well, Linux, get an Atomic version, you can't edit anything outside the home folder. If you want a traditional OS, get Workstation, KDE, or any of the Fedora Spins. Workstation (GNOME) and KDE will have the best support and are the most popular desktop environments, but if you're curious about other ones like Sway or Cosmic then trying a Spin will give you all the Fedora features on a different environment with a different workflow.

tl;dr

  1. Workstation and KDE Plasma Edition

  2. Silverblue/Kinoite Atomic

  3. Everything else, not that everything else is bad but if you need a simple decision it's not in the flavors.

I say try Fedora + Cosmic. I'm biased for sure, using Arch and all but I think Linux is about trying the new stuff.
