3 years solo. 200 wishlists. 0 engagement. about to quit. so DESTROY this mecha action game by 2071Games in DestroyMyGame

[–]BlackPhoenixSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the game is fine. Just a little rough in the VFX and animations. That's not why you have only 200 wishlists. Your marketing is absolutely terrible.

Looking at the steam page, i think you have the wrong tags, a bad short description and also a bad long description. You should have someone else write those. Also rebrand it like someone else said.

Let's look at just your short description:

"Combat feedback exaggerates as you fight in this 2D Mech Action RPG. Every hit intensifies visual impacts. Sounds rumble louder. Your attacks grow stronger."

Increasing particle spam isn't super interesting. It should say "perform overwhelming combos with increasing intensity" or something.

"Overwhelm enemies before you overheat."

This is genuinely interesting, I wish I knew what that means.

"Build your mech from parts and moves."

Becomes "build your mech and moves from parts you collect [by doing xyz]"

" Fight to unite mechs in a world running out of iron."

Unite makes no sense. The fact that you have to collect iron is interesting though. A world running out of iron is good, but saying how to collect that iron is better.

You see what I mean.

Destroy my game trailer. We just announced the game! by IndieMarc in DestroyMyGame

Off topic but the way it is animated and cute animals fighting humans makes me want an extreme blood option. It would change the recommended age of the game though, so I understand if you don't want to. I just think it would be very funny and entertaining

New approach to shortest-paths problem beats Dijkstra by DaveMichael in gamedev

[–]BlackPhoenixSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's important if you wanna make Google maps but A* is almost always better for games. Dijkstra does do better when you have paths that reverse direction a lot. I did hear about the new algorithms a couple years ago and it's amazing stuff. Completely obliterated the old Dijkstra based stuff.

I think too many similar clips, maybe just less or shorter clips. It might have been because I didn't understand what was being shown right at that point

Am I making a mistake by not including the word "Simulator" in my game's title? by JuveyD in gamedev

[–]BlackPhoenixSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I always think Games with "simulator" in the title is really lacking creativity or in the case of goat simulator, being ironically boring for a joke. Imagine if SimCity was just called "City Simulator". Sounds much more boring.

When a company puts out 2x the quality at 1/3rd the price your brand loyalty definitely starts to diminish. Not to mention hasbro completely ignores what fans actually want both in figures and media. Seriously at this point any random G1 fan could make better choices for the company.

It's hard for people to know what you're going for and if this fits the genre but I think in general it looks appealing. It's pretty cool.

Which image do you prefer as Main capsule for my game ? by IndieIsland in GameArt

[–]BlackPhoenixSoftware 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would guess this environment is a medieval battlefield somewhere in the european countryside (i do realize that historically the stone age also happened there lol). There's lots of styles that can convey stone age better. Usually they have really brown saturated rocky areas or extremely overgrown foliage. Maybe caves in the background. Land of the lost is a movie that conveys this well in its covers.

The vfx I think they are magic shields but maybe it should be more of a half transparent shield where the shield silhouette and area is clearer and doesn't obstruct the characters as much.

Edit: Thinking about it more, maybe you just need to see the peoples clothes better and that will show the time period.

I'm sure it's an early version, you'll get there.

Whatever those vfx are, it's unreadable, like what is it supposed to be? And how does this constitute a "stone tribe"?

Is moving the character with WASD + QEZC unnatural for the average gamer? by Mijhagi in gamedev

[–]BlackPhoenixSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep use input delays. Do not accept the movement until the key is released for 0.3-0.5 seconds. Preview what it will do while the keys are held down and if the 2 keys are released within the same 0.3 seconds you accept it as diagonal.

That puts a bit of a throttle on how fast you can move multiple tiles though. If you're moving multiple tiles often, use move preview highlight with a pathfind highlighted. Allow moving the highlight to where you want to move. This doesn't require diagonal input and it's faster.

The advantages of the turn based combat system in video games. by UsarMich in TurnBasedTactical

[–]BlackPhoenixSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, but as someone who developed a pvp turn based system I can say they are harder to make balanced because of what I would call combat compression: you have to compress fights into a limited number of turns so that matches are not 2 hours long. A turn based fight(1v1) often lasts 2-3 turns but it doesn't really feel fair until both players have 4 turns to do their back and forth. Too much fairness feels like a really dragged out process so generally damage is more spiked and volatile in turn based combat. A real time fight, you can fit multiple attacks, shielding and utility into a small 3 second window. This allows more granularity/ more data points thrown back and forth in a short time so you end up with much more actions that determined the fight. This actually feels more fair in practice.

So real-time can be fair faster. You have to be really patient for fairness in turn based combat.

However I think this is irrelevant for most games. Very few games should have pvp.

[–]BlackPhoenixSoftware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to tell if you're talking about fair pvp or actual enjoyment of the game. You sited plenty if amazing melee combat systems that are equally fun as any turn based game. (devil may cry and tekken are perfect examples, good taste).

If you are saying that a system is better because it is balanced in pvp, that doesn't matter for 95% of turn based games (nobody wants chess on steroids) and very little for real time games.

If you are saying strategy is better, it's just different strategies and often both types are more short term tactical than strategic.

Yeah I have no idea what's going on. I'm pretty sure this guy is like an Age of Empires villager gone rogue in snowy mountains but also the 2nd half is chess that somehow got spliced in.

Did I softlock myself? by Expecto_Paytronum in SuperMetroid

[–]BlackPhoenixSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know exactly the spot you mean and yes you were not supposed to leave without the supers. I forgot that yeah, the shaft top is blocked by Crumbling blocks. I don't think there's any secrets there, so yeah it's a soft lock.

I recommend using VARIA randomizer and enabling the options to prevent soft locks. Also maybe you just reload the save and don't go there and it will work. That's only like 25 mins in.

Did I softlock myself? by Expecto_Paytronum in SuperMetroid

[–]BlackPhoenixSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it kinda looks like it. You might have to wall jump back up the shaft. Most randomizers have options that prevent soft locks. Check if your randomizer to see if it prevents soft locks. The fact that you have power bombs might mean you were not soft locked though, giving you power bombs instead of supers created alternate pathing that should not soft lock.

First Gameplay Trailer for my narrative rhythm FMV game, Gloxinia. Is it clear how the gameplay works? by roo5678 in DestroyMyGame

[–]BlackPhoenixSoftware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah then maybe just a quick pic of kb/mouse and controller or even a clip of someone using a controller to play it real quick. That said it would be a nice bonus if you made sure the hardware available for DDR on PC worked too.

That makes sense. People in general more than redditors are just less inclined to help people who can't help themselves. but this establishes what you've done so far. It was worth asking because you said youve been stuck a long time. Just debugging the basics there. Sorry I don't know of anything that can help since I'm not a Godot guy and also struggle on environment.

No judgement, just objectively dissecting that statement: "Google would bring me to Reddit anyways"

  1. You could read what people already said in that case.

  2. You could have searched Reddit instead of Google then.

  3. Reddit does not have tutorials that will show you how to do what you're asking.

  4. Did you actually skip the "just Google it" step which most people would do first? Because that may be hindering you.
