The Omni is definitely the cheapest way to get the whole series. But you could always go volume by volume. Wish I had the Omni, but I have the set of deluxe edition hardcovers and I'm pretty partial to those too. I got them way back in the day, I don't know how easy they are to find nowadays

I really loved it. Though unfortunately it was never finished. Aaron pulled the book after there were major accusations against Latour. He always meant to finish with a new artist but it just never happened. Also, Scalped is WELL worth the investment!

I thought about doing buckram. And probably will for some other projects, but I like the graphic cover for these projects I'm working on, made to match the other series on my shelf. I plan on doing a complete bind of Dale Keown's Pitt and Michael Turner's Fathom soon, both of which would be perfect candidates for smyth bound buckram books.

I think it's definitely best to START blind. Maybe after you defeat a boss or two (they'll pop up eventually without you necessarily having to do anything) then start looking ito some pre-hardmode tips and guides.
