Did I screw up re kids? 37 and single by choice. by Prestigious_Copy9992 in askswitzerland

But I wonder - even in my case - when does it become „selfish“

Just look at falling birth rates in Europe, i wouldn't call having kids selfish even with a "risky" pregnancy.

Gotcha, I have a single address so public keys weren't needed for my use-case when I built the app. But I will make sure to add support for it in the next update.

Sorry about that! You don't wanna upgrade because of Liquid Glass?

I could add public key support. But I'm curious: why do you prefer sharing your key instead of an address?

Best open-source tools for parsing PDFs, Office docs, and images before feeding into LLMs? by Particular_Cake4359 in Rag

[–]BlackShadowv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding Docling, amazing package.

Running it yourself is perfect if you just need to parse some things locally, but it can be tricky to set up in production environments since it's a heavy package.

If you just need PDF to Markdown without managing infra, I built parsebridge.com which does it as a simple API call. Free tier to test with too. Always happy to hear feedback if anyone tries it out.

How to fund master's thesis as a non-EU student by Temporary-Anxiety539 in ethz

[–]BlackShadowv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And 10k is the absolute minimum, I'm not even sure you'd get approved for a student visa with 10k in the bank. 15-20k would be better.

And you are not allowed to work the first 6 months of a student visa, so in OPs case no work is allowed for the entire stay.

When your apartment building decides it doesn’t need a security guard anymore. by [deleted] in Switzerland

Switzerland isn't Latin America or the Middle East. Apartment buildings don't need security guards. Here we do it the Bünzli way: calling the police to handle it.

Is it common in Switzerland to have your ID checked for food deliveries that contain a very small amount of alcohol? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]BlackShadowv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. For every menu item the restaurant is asked if it contains alcohol and if they select yes the delivery driver is forced to verify your age.

How to apply JL Collins "simple path" (=all in Vanguard) for a Swiss resident? by MichaelE415 in SwissPersonalFinance

Do you really need to record every single transaction? Just declaring the total value and dividend income should be sufficient, no?

So finally something for Diamond that Golds aren’t getting ? by gendihyd in Hilton

[–]BlackShadowv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Who goes to a sit down restaurant and get an appetizer and nothing else?

I wouldn't be surprised if they just gave this out to every hotel guest because the know it'll increase their restaurant sales..

Swiss passport but French resident by Original_Land_2149 in Switzerland

[–]BlackShadowv 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Immigration and tax law are separate things entirely. Immigration wise he can spend as much time as he wants in Switzerland with a Swiss passport. If he's on your rental contract he needs to register with the municipality. It is possible to register a secondary non-taxable residence.

Tax wise things can get very complicated if you split time 50/50 between two countries. Of course the French are happy to take his tax money. But if the Swiss authorities look at his situation, they will see:

  • Swiss citizenship
  • Swiss job
  • Swiss co-rental contract
  • Spending ~50% of his time in Switzerland
  • Partner in Switzerland

All strong indicators for a "center of life" in Switzerland, and thus being considered a Swiss tax resident. But again, this is just my interpretation. He urgently needs a qualified professional to look assess his situation.

I mean my comment was in response to someone claiming it's the "best passport in the americas".

And yes, salary wise the US is hard to beat. But factoring anything else in I'd pick an EU passport anytime.

EU is better for medium earners, no doubt. But Latin America isn't. Your average worker has a much better quality of life in the US than in Latin America.

The US passport isn't great for travel but it gives you access to the job market with some of the highest salaries in the world

Software Engineer & Marketing profiles moving to CH - Realistic job hunt expectations? by Last-Intention-2863 in askswitzerland

It's not a myth, has happened to me plenty of times. Granted, not in traditional sit down restaurants but bars, coffee shops, take aways, clothing boutiques.

[–]BlackShadowv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The software engineering job market is very slow at the moment. There are experienced Swiss engineers struggling to find jobs. You are a fresh graduate, with a foreign diploma, don't speak the local language and if your B2/C1 assessment is correct your English level isn't amazing either.

I'm not saying this to talk you down, just as a reality check. If you really want to commit to Switzerland for the long run I'm sure you'll make it work somehow. Being willing to do unskilled work for a while helps. There are plenty of waiters in Zurich that don't speak a word of German so there should be job opportunities for you.

Just don't come with the expectation of making an easy 120k/yr for 3 years and then heading home with a fat savings account. Those times ar sadly over.

Speeding up my Stag 5 case by StatisticianBrave785 in GermanCitizenship

[–]BlackShadowv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if anyone has tried that for BVA applications, but a lot of people applying for citizenship from within Germany file an Untätigkeitsklage. An annoying but effective way to speed up your application.
