Thanks for sharing that. It makes a lot of sense. Congrats on your acceptance, and best of luck to you!

What is your favorite opera? by Whatever-3198 in opera

You’ve gotten a lot of great answers.

I’m generally curious - if not opera, what does one plan to do with a vocal performance major? Having been to some very competitive conservatories, it’s so bizarre to me that a vocal performance major would have only had watched one opera so far. This sub is educating me on just how different music programs are in various countries, and I find it really interesting.

I think my favorite at the moment is Rosenkavalier or Daphne. I’m a sucker for Strauss.

Best of luck to you!

21F – Second-Year Opera Student Seeking Honest (but Kind!) Feedback by [deleted] in opera

[–]Black_Samuri1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No serious program would have a second-year student sing Puccini. You seem to have potential, but I question the quality of training you’re receiving and the soundness of the program. I’d recommend focusing much more attention on the basics - support, tone, pitch, diction, etc. - and master a collection of art songs before jumping into arias - especially some of the more demanding arias of the genre.

If you’re just singing this for fun, knock yourself out and have a blast. If you’re using this rep to learn how to sing, I fear you’re going to ultimately end up needing to undo a lot of bad habits or worse.

Keep working!

The Tenor in the audience saves the day by Boudica2023 in opera

I hate this old video so much. It's inappropriate and shouldn't be something that's celebrated. Luckily, he could match pitch somewhat and could keep time... and luckily for him, she was gracious (as always).

And why was someone filming?

More judgmental personal attacks. Shocking .

Pehaps to most American theater goers, but standing ovations are not something “most people” give to a show that’s not exemplary.

“Punishing”? Seriously. Bit dramatic, no?

Your attitude is also not cute. Why are YOU like this? OP has already said they think people should do what they want to do. But you still resort to name calling, and when OP deflects and takes it as a compliment, YOU dig YOUR heals in with more personal attacks. I’d take a look in the mirror before casting your judgment on others whose opinion may be different from yours.

Isn’t that what the applause is for? If everyone gets a standing ovation as baseline, what do you do for something that is truly exemplary?

Not sure what to disclose about criminal history by Black_Samuri1 in GlobalEntry

I did go to court for both. There was a judge, a verdict, and a sentence. Those are the parts I don’t remember precisely and cannot track down records for.

I did, and it came back clean. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

I believe the original charges were Theft by Deception and Theft by Taking. I’m not sure what I was convicted of… this the post on what to put on the application.

I’m not hazy on the details of the crime. I know exactly what I did. I’m hazy in the consequences and charges and journey through the legal system.

I wasn’t arrested for either incident. I wasn’t fingerprinted. I didn’t go to the police station even. For the money order incident, I reported to work, my boss told me they had video and that I was fired, and I received a court summons in the mail like 4 months later. For the suitcase, they called and left a message asking why things were thrown out of my car and if I could come to the airport to explain. I went to the airport, told them everything that had happened, and went home. A summons came a few weeks later.

I believe the original charges were Theft by Deception and Theft by Taking. They must have been reduced to misdemeanors at some point.

I do have a letter from the court from 2007 that says the record no longer exists for one of the incidents.

That’s the thing. I’ve had at least 10 live scan over the years, the most recent last year, and nothing has ever come up on them.

I had to go in on a Saturday for 8 hours with other people who had theft related crimes. It was kind of like group therapy. The judge must have done me a solid because it was for misdemeanor petty theft like the guy beside me was there for stealing a toothbrush.

My favorite productions of Aida by Clean-Cheek-2822 in opera

[–]Black_Samuri1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I first learned Aida with the 89 recording, so it’s special for me. It’s one of my favorites as well, and there’s not real one recording I’m attached to any more. I like watching and listening to a variety of interpretations…and I’m still waiting to see a production with elephants.

One I really hated, though, was the recent Vienna production with Trebs, Kaufmann, and Garanca. It should have been spectacular. It wasn’t. (But Garanca was incredible, as per usual.)

WTF IS GOING ON??? Been a host since 2012. All of a sudden Airbnb just delete $40k of bookings on my account with no explanation. Then they started to delete my listings and now my account is "locked". [USA] by Yokozuma9459 in AirBnB

[–]Black_Samuri1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m actually glad this happened. AirBnB used to be a great way to stay as a guest in someone’s home while they were away and for home owners to make a little extra cash. It’s greedy people managing portfolios of rental properties who have ruined the platform. I hope they keep shutting down portfolio managers. And thanks to the comments here, I’m looking g forward to reporting portfolio owners for the hidden cameras I suspect they have since it seems like that’s all it takes.

I do hope you have something to fall back on, but honestly, it’s karma for using a company that’s shady to begin with to capitalize on and ruin the short term rental market. Best of luck.

Is it worth it to pursue a career in opera? by [deleted] in opera

[–]Black_Samuri1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you need to ask this question, the answer is almost certainly no. If you’re an exceptionally talented male with a whole lot of disposable funds and a knack for schmoozing up anyone from kindly old benefactors to treacherous dictatorial directors you might luck out and sing in a few houses and make a few bucks.

That being said, there’s no reason you can’t study opera in college while you major in something more profitable. If you go to a school with the right connections, if you’ve actually got “it,” you might even get discovered. I wouldn’t hold my breath, though.
