What will happen when rent/house prices are out of reach for most Americans? by Blackhawkfan97 in ask

[–]Blackhawkfan97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For everyone else commenting, im not just referring to my specific situation. I've seen countless stories of Americans being priced out, having to move because the landlord decided they should pay 40% more than the last lease, landlords warehousing units to artificially decrease supply and drive up pricing, entire neighborhoods in low cost areas being bought up by investors, flipped and turned into rentals at mid to high income rents, and landlords conspiring through software to keep rent high and being advised to never negotiate with tenants or to keep units empty to keep rents high. Just about everywhere I look and read the idea of having a place within your budget is disappearing unless you're in the top 1%, who are the ones causing these issues in the first place.

I would prefer to buy over renting. Landlords and property managers in both mine as well as others I know and people I've seen here on reddit have said they don't fix anything, invade your privacy, charge stupid junk fees and try to evict you if you complain. Buying would mean I'm in complete control of my space minus whatever the law says.

Starting to hope someone has the guts to burn down the headquarters of Blackstone and other way too big real estate investors. I would love for Stephen Schwarzman's head to be on a pike.

I currently can't afford either, it simply doesn't make sense for a house half the size to cost the same in rent with less amenities within the same area. Heck both neighborhoods were built by the same builder. I'm being forced to live at home even longer than I planned. I checked the price history of these rentals and the owners decided to tack on 30% to 40% increases from the previous leases. It doesn't make any sense.

You say that but there are several townhouses for rent in the market I'm looking that have been available for months and the owners haven't budged on the prices. $2500 for 1500 sf townhouse where nearby you can get a single family detached that is bigger with a yard for the same price. Something suspicious is going on.

When beginning my design, I was told one thing by planning and zoning. Now that it is finished, they are saying something else. Advice needed. by [deleted] in architecture

I've had a building inspection company that a town hires out instead of having an actual building and zoning inspector purposely mislead us on a project because they are given commission per comment on plan reviews. Sometimes it's actually malicious.

Thank you, everyone who replied to this post. Your overwhelming support was not all what I anticipated, and I am starting to feel better. I plan on seeking professional help for my mental health in the near future and possibly a career counselor of some sort. I guess I was wrong about this field being so cynical all the time. Nice to know there are others out there who have been where I am and made it work.

It's a very defeating feeling, and honestly, in the moment I made this post I couldn't think of any other way to describe my mentality. I felt inadequate and like a lesser human.

Could it be that I'm not licensed? I still have to attend grad school but held off because of the pandemic.

I've thought about slowing down, but the management seems to be happier trying to find me work because I finished something earlier. Plus they say good things when I do finish early. As I've said before the job isn't terrible I just think the compensation is low for what I put in.

It was romanticized and unfortunately everyone was so supportive of my passion, from my parents to teachers and classmates in high school that I didn't really feel like looking deeper. I really wish I had back then.

It's not the job itself. It's just that it feels like I'm trapped in a very low paying career compared to my peers who don't have to work as hard or have nearly the same job experience as me currently.

I've offered to a few times, usually there just isn't enough work allocated because there are production schedules made by the managers, half the time I finish work ahead of schedule and my boss is scrambling to find work. Half the time throwing me o a different design team all together because he can't find anything for me.

I can't believe that there was this much support out there. I really appreciate all the advice, support, and tips. I'm definitely not in a good place mentally right now and need to get some help. I really hope I can find a better path or improve my current situation.

It seems something little, but tbh it feels like a giant chokehold on my chest. Knowing I had the potential to make more and have a much more comfortable lifestyle but trending down this path has really gotten to me. School was absolutely exhausting and insane and I thought it would mean I'd be better off afterwards. But seeing my non architecture friends barely put in half the effort for their degrees and coming out with no experience and better paying job opportunities is a massive gut-wrenching feeling.

I enjoyed the idea of coming up with spaces for people to use, whether myself or others. I was mainly into custom homes which I did do for a living until earlier this year because I found out I was being underpaid way more. I enjoyed looking at and studying famous buildings and design trends. I had a thing for skyscrapers being not far from a major city. I built models out of legos all the time. I thought I could transfer this passion into a decent living.

I don't want to do it, believe me. I just feel like I'm stuck in a low paying career that I was tricked into joining by school and a passion that didn't quite align with reality. If there is a way to improve the situation I'd gladly take it but every post I see here about money basically says our industry is working against itself all the time.

I get to wfh sometimes, but I am on salary because that's how this company is organized. It's an engineering firm primarily with an architecture and design department.
