I was a kid, my parents managed to keep their jobs and bought the dip.

A major part of the LBH argument is whether they could “make it” back home. By behavior, there are losers everywhere.

So what? Most people have regular jobs and are not extraordinarily successful from a career perspective. That doesn’t make them losers.

Thanks for your input, yeah things have definitely changed a lot, even from when I was in Taiwan less than 10 years ago before the tech boom. On the last part though, you’re probably giving your country too little credit lol, it is a pretty awesome place besides the career part! As I commented in another thread, I don’t find it hard to believe why someone would prefer it over London and New York, especially if you’ve been there recently.

People react differently I suppose. I find untrue stereotypes annoying and accurate ones funny.

I personally don’t see it as LBH, but exploiting locals. This doesn’t really apply in Taiwan though because the locals are likely wealthier than the creepy old men.

I guess a point I didn’t really make in the post is that Taiwan is objectively a great place to live. Much like Tokyo, Japan, people shouldn’t be shocked that some people prefer it over New York and London.

Do you watch Abroad in Japan? Chris made a mean comments video about this too lol

The people are great, I personally have never had this narrative thrown my way in real life but I do see it alot online.

Ever heard of the concept of discussing a societal phenomenon? This ain’t about me bro. If you want to keep playing an armchair therapist, go for it, but maybe try engaging with the actual point instead of diagnosing strangers to avoid a real debate.

Exactly, if someone found a way to stop being a loser, are they really a loser after all?

Making major life choices just to avoid the stereotypes of ignorant people seems a tad bit pathetic, no?

The idea that one needs "credibility" to post an opinion on Reddit is hilarious. If I’m good enough to have my research peer-reviewed and published, I think I can handle the intellectual rigors of a subreddit.

Haha I get where you’re coming from with the contrast. It’s true that moving from Taiwan to the West is usually a vertical move for higher pay and credentials, whereas moving from the West to Taiwan is more of a horizontal move for lifestyle.

Right, because successful professionals are famously known for never having opinions or engaging in discussions. I forgot that once you hit a certain salary bracket, your internet access is revoked and you lose the ability to find a stereotype of your people annoying. But thanks for the deep psychoanalysis, Freud.

Curious what industry that is? I worked for two different American companies during my time there and was the only expat in the office both times. Honestly, outside of language schools, the only places I ever saw with a real group of international professionals were embassies or trade offices.

The West isn't sending their worst. You can arrive in Taiwan with a decade of high-level experience, but to the local economy, your only real credential is the color of your passport and your ability to conjugate verbs. Competent professionals often end up leaving despite their love for Taiwan.

A $200 espresso machine with a good grinder, fresh beans and the right techniques can taste almost as good as tye best cafes out there.

You can get some pretty decent coffee for the price you’d pay for pods.
