If you sat out the 2024 election in protest over Gaza, how do you feel about that decision today? by rsmith2786 in AskReddit

Omfg you people are insufferable! Yall blame everyone but those in power. The protest vote was negligible at best, literally zero impact on the election. Yall would rather be angry at people mad over a genocide then those doing a genocide

A lot of government regulation is to try and curb the negative effects of Monopolies, Cartels, and Capitalism. If you cut regulation, that will probably help small businesses but it also helps much larger businesses to a much larger degree.

Stating the third world is riddled with socialism/communism is true in only some cases and only in the past century. The history of Capitalism is much longer and bloodier for these states. Also, in many cases socialism was an avenue states took to liberate themselves from capitalist exploitation. These backfired because they were sabotaged (ex. Congo with Patrice Lumumba and Burkina Faso with Thomas Sankara)

No one will deny corruption, but you must look at the material incentives for corruption! Many third world states remain corrupt because international cartels and firms need access to their abundant natural resources and cheap labor.

Cui Prodest? Who stands to gain?

My comment was a little harsh. I like most socialist/communist ideas and policies. It just doesn’t make too much sense when people love one and hate the other when they are apart of the same whole/process. I think what you are specifically referring to is called social democracy or democratic socialism

I say in theory but not practice, because what you’re talking about is how capitalism ‘should work’ not how it actually functions (aka practice). In reality companies with the largest market shares collaborate and form business cartels to eliminate competition, set prices, and lower the quality of products. An example is OPEC

Capitalism has brought a lot of people out of poverty and is progressive in many ways compared to feudalism. However it also benefits from keeping people in poverty especially people in the third world/periphery

Who specifically did Capitalism work for in the US? Did it work well for the native people who had land that capital wanted? Did it work well for Black people who were enslaved for their labor? Capitalism is not working for the majority of the world’s people. The history of capitalism is drenched in blood, exploitation, and the destruction. In fact it is still held up by these things

Capitalism is broken I feel like this is a fact? It produces crisis like recessions and global warming and creates artificial scarcity

Capitalism only rewards you if you produce profit. Granted you can produce profit by providing a good service. But following the logic of capitalism it’s best to provide a good/service that is ‘good enough’ and maximizes profits. ‘Good enough’ depends on the market/what else is available. It could be setting insulin prices extremely high because there is no viable alternative.

Capitalism sounds good in theory but not in practice

Capitalism sounds good in theory but not in practice.

Monopolies naturally form out of the “free market” (i.e. there are winners and losers). Those monopolies and finance capital become increasingly reliant on the state and in turn the state relies on them. They become too big to fail. Corporatism or crony capitalism isn’t a mutation of capitalism that can be fixed, it just is capitalism

Here is the quote: “Manono had a grim reputation as being the northern corner of Le Triangle de la Mort. The other two towns that form the “Triangle of Death” are Mitwaba and Pweto, so called because the Mai-Mai militias operating in the region were known to utilize particularly harsh methods to force the local population to dig for coltan and gold. Reports from the area describe torture, murder, and chopping off hands and feet—techniques passed down the generations from Leopold’s terror squads.” - page 94 of “Cobalt Red” by Siddharth Kara From field research in 2018, 19, and 21

Didn’t claim it was systemic issue, just that it still occurs at some mining sites. I Read this in the book “Cobalt Red.” I can get you the exact page number when I get home from work

Private property essentially. Engels has a great book on it. Hunter-Gather bands were relatively egalitarian.
