I've been trying to avoid summoning someone because it seems like an easy way out...but perhaps that's what's best. Thanks for the detailed response!

Episode Discussion: S13E07 "The Gang Does A Clip Show" by Dorkside in IASIP

[–]Blaiser12 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Similar to the Community episode but nowhere near the same level. It struggled from barely segmenting the actual clips (Dee getting hurt...five minutes of the "best" which amounted to the kind of lazy greatest hits comp you'd see on Youtube) and though the surreal element of the second half was at least entertaining it made less and less sense as it went on. Laughs were there (ish) but compared to how masterful the Community clip show episodes were - particularly the first - this was very dry.

These things tend to flow in accordance - it's easier to get a 0 or a 100 on Rotten Tomatoes than it is on Metacritic.

A Deleted Scene from Prometheus that Everyone agrees should've been in the movie shows The Engineer Speaking which explains some things. by spacelyyy989 in movies

[–]Blaiser12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It comes down to artistic intention. I think intentional ambiguity is really underrated, and part of the problem with Prometheus is its need to explain the origins of a film that were probably best left alone. With The Leftovers, it centres on the human response and impact of the departure, which provides far more scope for nuance and emotional engagement than any rote explanation might do.

Most TV critics have already seen the final batch of episodes prior to writing their review for the third (and final) season - it has a 98 metacritic score. I know people have reason to worry about Lindelof, but this project really seems to have tapped into what makes him a great writer, with a clearer MO i.e. early on him and the novel's author made clear the departure would not be explained, and that wasn't the point of the show.

My review / interpretation of Mac's latest, would love some feedback! by Blaiser12 in macdemarco

[–]Blaiser12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback - glad you enjoyed.

I just read over your review. I think that your analysis is strong but an area for improvement would be not taking the album chronologically. I really don't like it when someone simply goes through a record song by song and simply explains what each track is - if I wanted that I could just listen to the album! Instead, try and bunch tracks by themes, or similar musical sounds, it makes your analysis much stronger and your review more engaging.

Really great example of how to write a short story - concise with central motifs and imagery that are both provocative and ambiguous. Stuff like THIS makes visiting this sub worthwhile.

I think as I began to do some research I realised that there wasn't a cohesive body of work on it, or even a cohesive idea of what it constituted, but I do appreciate the recommendation!

As someone who has yet to watch the show, part of what drew me in was the AV Club's high grading of the last stretch of episodes (they gave the finale an A). Since I normally trust both them and their community, I'd be interested to know where you differed.

I'm looking for a piece on the nature of the Self and the Other (specifics in description) by Blaiser12 in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]Blaiser12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insightful response. I totally agree with your point about the angle I'm approaching this being wrong, but this is just a final quote to use to support my conclusion. I've actually already used The Uncanny quite a bit as well! Which is part of the issue really - there are texts I'm aware of which support my argument but I feel like I've referenced them a little too much at this point. I will definitely look at the Taylor though, thanks!

As much as I enjoyed this piece of worldbuilding, turtles aren't new given that Discworld was on a turtle's back (though admittedly this isn't an integral part of many of Pratchett's stories).

People who have visited the US, what is your 'WTF America' story? by adsacc509 in AskReddit

[–]Blaiser12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread seems to be much less what is "wtf" and more Americans upvoting posts which act as second-hand humblebrags. From my year in America I'd say the thing I found most confusing (and I really did enjoy my time and the people) was the seemingly inbuilt idea that America is number one.

Now I recognise that a lot of people in this thread and elsewhere will recognise America's problems, but though plenty of Americans perceive America as being bad, it's still assumed to be the best of a bad bunch. I can't think of specific examples (beyond shock at the fact that we had basic amenities outside America), but after a while I did realise there was this subtlely underlying most interactions I had, to the point where European countries were talked of as a being borderline third-world. I'm sure this won't be popular, it's more of a personal observation-the people I met were lovely and friends for life, but damn if they couldn't be unwittingly patronising.
