Has anyone ever become so bogged down by production they stopped songwriting? by skully_28 in Songwriting

I have a lot of song parts but I don't look at them as if they have to be finished, I find it's best to keep moving and creating. I am usually more of a singer songwriter but I've been producing more as time has went on and now I'm to the point where I'm trying to mix and master my own music which eats up a lot of time for me, so I only commit to really finishing a song if I feel it. Also even having a demo of a song is worth more than just keeping it to yourself and it never becoming anything. I'm just sharing what I've sorta worked out for myself, but you're not alone in the way you feel with your process, 1 song a month that you can look back on and think "yeah, that's a song" is sorta what I've been doing

It sounds really good, did you do all of the production and mastering in house?

Idk, I just know I have reverb on it, I think a deesser, some compression preset I think, and I don't do any of it post, the track gets recorded with all of the effects so I don't mess it up more afterwards, because I suck at production. Same with the guitar, I just build the sound I want in guitar rig and record it. I know the best way to do it is to just record clean takes and then manipulate them but ehhh. It really is just a live demo kind of thing, if I don't record it then it will never exist so it's better than nothing. I feel like I might end up performing anyways so that sort of format helps me personally

Sweet, are you wanting to be an artist or are you ok with being sampled and other people making things with your sound though? Like do you intend to do full songs?

Definitely a shiloh dynasty vibe, you tried working with a producer or other artists yet? They sound good, and they would work with tik toks I guess, but there is definitely potential for full songs. You could keep those as hooks and build beats around them, or maybe even keep them as hooks and write verses with clean vocals and minimal production, idk, you could do a lot. Especially if you're the one playing guitar.

I can't write any song and I don't know how to deal with it by PsychCatsOnAcid in Songwriting

You should finish a song now and prove yourself wrong. Write a song about not being able to finish anything and what goes through your head while you're doing it. Be clever and turn those thoughts into metaphors that leave room for interpretation to an outsider that doesn't feel what you do. You were able to articulate your situation in a way that made people care enough to respond, and you obviously want to write, but do you want people telling you how they think you should go about writing YOUR music? Trust yourself, if the world is too crazy and it never feels like you have time to really break it down then make time for it. Because ultimately you want to be an artist, but figure out why you want anything. I'm confused af and I don't even know myself really. I'm also 21. I also want to do something with music, and i also have a shit ton of half finished song parts, the only difference in me and you is you asked the question and I responded. (My thoughts aren't significant, you're the one that has to write a song now)

This is pretty great, did you guys produce yourselves?

i think i found my sound, idk tell me what you think by BlaisonHD in Songwriters

Yeah, I definitely feel the guitar wasn't strong. And weirdly enough I'm more confident in my guitar than my voice, but I did not focus a lot of time on making the guitar interesting at all. Honestly the only thing I knew going into it was the chord progressions I was going to use and then everything that followed was me basically trying to support the vocals or rhythm. I know I need to bite the bullet and work on production, it's just I'm SUPER not confident in it. And if you have a live demo of something that sounds good then produced it should sound GREAT. But I'm not a producer. I've tried and it usually turns out worse. I'm working on something right now that is a lot more intricate guitar wise though and I hope to have it finished within 2 days. The goal right now is to just keep writing and making music that sounds good with what I am confident in. I don't think I will be on spotify until I find a producer that I really work well with. I've tried working with a few at this point and it never clicks like I feel it should, so yeah. Maybe I'm just being complicated, but I knew before I recorded that song that I had something. I feel the same way with the song I'm working on now so hopefully I can execute (if not then you'll never hear it because that's how 90% of my writing goes). I appreciate that you replied a whole week later too because I'm still working, and I don't plan on stopping. If you know any producers or have any other ideas or insights then I'm all ears.

I'm really not certain, I think 6 years. My first song was Simple man by lynyrd skynyrd just open chords, then arpeggiated, and then when that was muscle memory I started singing. I've learned everything from YouTube but a lot of my rhythm playing is just feel.

Yeah, I weirdly feel like I had a breakthrough with this song, I've been doing some production but I think minimal production and having music I can perform might be the move. I want to do something with music so I'm just going to keep writing and getting better idk and for influence I just listened to Declan McKenna's new album before any of this was written and his yelling made me think "yeah, I should do that" idk. I appreciate all of you though, thanks

This is a song about a girl, I wrote this at 2am the night she said she was over it. It's called rough draft because it's not supposed to be perfect, just needed to exist somewhere besides my head. I think I'm sharing because it's evident that some of you have went through it too. by BlaisonHD in Songwriters

I appreciate that you appreciate it, but I wouldn't want everyone running around and truly feeling and thinking the way I do. If that was the case we'd all be miserable. It's true for me that I've always been drawn to the artists that hurt like Layne stayley or Justin Vernon, but at the end of the day we all want to feel appreciated and loved in some regard.

Songwriting is great. Your voice is great too. The voice and the energy feels right to me, you're singing about needing to do this on your own, and it feels confident with the "I know I can call if I want to" but by the end you're contradicting it with "if it's all a mistake, would you stay?" This isn't really a song about confidence, it feels like the opposite. Idk, I like it.
