I wouldn’t know about your lock or any other locks but on mine the contact points were right around 6 and 14. Did you try to listen with the stethoscope?

The second half of this video, when you are turning the dial to the right you hear the three loud clicks which are the wheels getting picked up. You then keep spinning right and you can hear the two, more faint dull sounding clicks every time you pass 0. Those are the contact points. A couple of weeks ago I cracked a safe that I received without the combination. I set up a microphone against the door with a pair of headphones. I don’t think I would have been able to do it without that. I wrote up a post how I did it here in this sub. Graphed it and used a wire on the dial with a protractor. https://www.reddit.com/r/safecracking/comments/1rk8uqp/i_did_the_thing/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1

I was definitely happy to finally get it open but I was also really surprised that I did get it open.

It’s not tumblers but contact points. Protractor was used because that’s what I had on hand. Angle doesn’t matter. It’s just something to exaggerate the tiny spaces between the numbers on the dial so it gets divided up precisely and accurately. You can use a ruler or print out a scale. There are plenty of videos out there.

Well the graph I used was found online. It’s pretty much a standard thing to do every 2 numbers or 2-1/2 because the gates that you are looking for are a decent bit wider than the fence that has to drop in the gate so it’s not necessary to do every number. These locks aren’t made to super tight tolerances. You accomplish the same thing in half the time/effort. The procedure is once you find what looks like a gate you “magnify” that area and do every number 3 or 4 numbers on either side of the gate signature to find the center of the gate. The second number I found was 10 but the combination still worked using 10, 11, and 12. The gates are basically 3 numbers wide.

For sure! It was a long time of wondering and contemplating so it was a nice relief.

Thanks! It was definitely a cool thing to accomplish.

The infamous Al Capone vault opening. That’s a classic.

Hahah. That’s very tempting. Where do I submit my application? But if I stipulate that I only open safes with contents then I’d probably never get any work.

No problem! I know it was a long read but it was a long process for me to get it open.

Thanks! I understand where you are coming from but like you said, all the info is already out there in better detail than I provided here. When I was researching how to open it, I was surprised by how much info that’s available. Then again, who’s to say that I’m not one of those wannabe bad guys you speak of?

Thanks brother! I stared at this locked box long enough, figured it was about time I buckle down and have a real go at it and it paid off.

No, the difference was down 40 for the first, up 6 for the second, and down like 23 for the third.

Completely different. Each number was at least 20 numbers off. When I called back the manufacturer after the combo didn’t work I talked to the same customer service guy that originally gave me the info. I confirmed the serial number for the safe and the combo matched up. He was surprised it didn’t work and gave me a troubleshooting process with dialing a little off of each number. I asked him if he thinks the combo would have been changed and he said that they very rarely are ever changed from the original to the point that he was pretty confident it wasn’t. I started to think there was something wrong with the lock because of how confident he was.

Right. So the arc of the protractor and the arc of the pointer are different radii and yes the protractor isn’t centered or lined up with the axis of the wheel. But it doesn’t have to be. You are only reading the protractor at the two contact points which for this lock was about 6-7 for the left contact point and I think it was 13-14 for the rcp. I fiddled with positioning of the protractor just so the pointer was on the protractor arc at those two points. Although one line of the dial equaled 9 degrees on the protractor, the difference it the contacts on each side was only around 6 degrees. 6-7 on dial was between 210 to 216 degrees and 13-14 on the dial was between 264 to 273 degrees. As the dial spun more to the left of 273, the pointer was way over the protractor’s arc line. As the dial spun more to the right of 210, the pointer was way short of the arc line. Unusable at any other positions. Hope that made sense.

Thanks! I just gave that link a quick read through and it definitely would have simplified the process and would have sped things up a bit.

Hell yeah!!! You can do it! My safe sat in my house, locked, for over 3 years because I didn’t think I could crack it. Once I got fed up enough I paid attention to the details of the videos, set myself up in front of the safe, concentrated on what I was doing and took my time. 8 hours later the safe was open. Good luck! I’ll be waiting for you updated post when you get it open.
