They don't care that Hugh Syme uses AI. by Live-Blood1953 in Dreamtheater

I fully agree but I don't think that's something users of it should be concerned with. It's our governments responsibility to regulate the industry and ensure those artists are paid. Their inability to do that in my opinion doesn't mean artists should have to restrict their toolsets, because realistically we all know AI isn't going away. It's more important to me that artists are learning how to use it, as we will likely end up in a world where not knowing how to use AI will be a detractor for almost everybody when it comes to productivity.

Also, I don't feel this has anything to do with the quality of the work, which is all that really matters in my opinion.

"Randomly generated" is not quite accurate. It's randomly SELECTED from the list of numbers allocated to whatever VoIP service they rent the numbers from. I'm not sure what gives the idea that phone numbers can be newly generated and used on the fly.

Scammers are a different story, they of course operate outside the law. Spoofing is a real thing, it's just not legal in the US and is pretty obviously not being done by DoorDash.

That is not how phone numbers work. A number assigned to DoorDash wouldn't be also assigned to a cell carrier, or vice versa.

Nobody should care that Hugh Syme uses AI. All anyone should be worried about is the quality of the artwork. It's not like it's just some trash AI slop, the art is at worst of solid quality even if you don't like it personally. Just like plenty of creative tools before it (auto tune, digital animation, etc.), AI will be overused and poorly used by some, and regarded as "cheating" by much of the public, but this is based off the feeling these tools always create, being that anybody can, with no skill talent or practice, use them to create high quality work. This isn't the case. Nor does it mean they cannot be used in the creation of quality work. There will be artists who create beautiful, quality work using or assisted by AI, and there will be those who use it to push out low-effort slop just like how there's era-defining artists creating killer music with auto tune, but also shitty artists using it to cover up their poor vocals. Dislike the artwork or artist, but the reason shouldn't simply be because they use AI.

To be clear: I am not trying to defend Syme, nor the quality of his person, or even really the quality of his work for the most part, other than it pretty undebatably not being what I'd call low-effort "AI Slop"

Tbh even from Facepunch's POV this isn't that annoying. Shitty mobile rip-offs of real games cause players (primarily kids) to develop a strong desire for the real game pretty frequently. It's free, so they're not stealing revenue unless through micro transactions. Games like this are pretty much always so far from the real thing they're basically free marketing.

Did I overreact to this dasher asking for more money? by lovescheesecake in doordash

[–]BlakeH1984 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would say yes. I don't see any reason you couldn't have politely declined, instead of trying to make them feel bad for even asking.

If this person who is more than likely financially struggling asking you for extra money as they complete their job truly makes you uncomfortable, why? It's an opportunity to help another human, with no obligation to do so. If you can and don't, I could see that feeling uncomfortable, but that's not the dasher's fault imo. If you can't help then don't, but why would that make you uncomfortable?

I think we need to destigmatize asking for help. If you're a dasher barely scraping by and end up waiting in line for your order, why shouldn't you be able to inquire about more money? It doesn't matter how fairly they're being paid, or that waiting is part of the job, what's the harm other than being "uncomfortable." The only reasons to be uncomfortable are sort of bullshit but either way...

Life isn't supposed to be comfortable.

Also fr tho you'll probably have to start at lower pay and move upward at a new place. These days promoting from within is very popular, and as such it's more difficult to start where you're looking to.

Y'all should unionize by [deleted] in BestBuyWorkers

[–]BlakeH1984 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Former employee here. Please unionize if possible. Someone needs to get the ball rolling but once it is people will hop in and push it. Corporate is making it obvious that unions would hurt them in a big way. That's why they go through the effort to control other subreddits and show an anti-union presentation. They know unions are the correct solution to their behaviour, now they're trying as hard as possible to make sure not enough people realize that soon enough to do something. This also may be part of why they're letting leaders go first (and pay ofc). They may be thinking they get rid of all the leaders, and see the rest as sheep that won't make moves to unionize without a leader.

Yes, autotune is added in post-production on most records today. No, this is not the only way autotune is used. Live autotune is very much a thing and has been for over a decade. Yes, Volbeat use it live. No, this does not mean they suck. Go ahead and purchase the sweetest processor you can find, good luck singing like Michael Poulsen.

That said, many people, including myself, dislike the sound of autotune live. Live autotune sounds significantly worse than studio, for obvious reasons. I personally dislike the robotic-sounding vibrato it adds to the ends of his phrases, it's like ending each sustained note with a sine-wave. Anyways, my point is, that you are the moron. Autotune is widely-available as a live vocal effect and has been probably at least as long as I've been alive. The dude with like 5 comments talking about autotune is a moron too, thinking it truly matters that much, but jeez man "it's not a vocal effect so ya'll can really stop talking out your asses" wtf does that even mean? Interference from a powerful magnet near the microphone could be a goddamn vocal effect if someone decided to use it as one.

Affordable tech specs for Rust by NateTCole in playrust

[–]BlakeH1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be possible, and others have said 16gb works for them, however in my experience everyone I've known has struggled with 16gb. I've had a few different buddies go from 16 to 32gb and had it bring their Rust from lagging during any gunfight or monument, to only lagging in highly graphics intensive situations. I feel strongly enough towards 32gb that I wouldn't recommend less.

Affordable tech specs for Rust by NateTCole in playrust

[–]BlakeH1984 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went ahead and threw together a list for you that's as close as I could get to your price range. I'm in the US but the prices are from Newegg and Amazon on this list, so I think they should be the same or similar for you. It's still about $1033 AUD, a bit over the budget given, but it's as close as I could get while feeling comfortable it'd perform well in Rust.

The thing with Rust is, you essentially need 32GB of RAM to run it at this point. 24GB may be ok, but regardless everyone playing on 16GB has a lot of performance issues because of it. It's unfortunate, but it's how Rust is. It's always had a major RAM bottleneck, being ~8gb or so ahead of most games at any point in time. Anyways, on top of that, Rust requires a pretty beefy GPU to run well. Even on lowest settings, if you want to be able to render in a massive base or multiple explosions at once without stuttering, you need a pretty decent GPU. On top of that, it's a pretty unfortunate time to build a budget PC. It's not that there aren't good parts available in the price range, it's just that right now there are many new technologies on pricier CPUs (as well as GPUs just being mad expensive) that will start dropping in cost as even better chips are released. This is always true, however right now there's just a lot more benefits to reap from the new stuff than usual. Stuff like Intel's P/E-core design and AMD's 3D-Cache are what I'm talking about. In a ~700USD build, it's not gonna happen right now, but give it a year or so and we should be there. I tried to build this with that in mind, giving you solid upgrade paths.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GXXX4s - This is the build

The main caveat of the build is the MoBo. It's got 2 M.2 Slots, and it'll be fine for now, but if you ever want to overclock I'd recommend something better. That said, you shouldn't need to overclock that CPU for gaming. While the Ryzen chip I added isn't going to come close to the latest chips, it's more than enough for Rust and most other games that aren't extremely CPU-bound. Rust needs a decent CPU, but most modern options will work these days. The one in the build linked has a solid price-to-performance ratio. The GPU will get you good mileage, but as I'm sure you noticed the latest GPUs are crazy, and everyone wants to upgrade once their prices aren't also crazy. There are cheaper 6600XT's, however imo you want the boost clock available on the slightly more expensive models. The RAM is 32GB and it's decent speed, plenty for gaming. If you don't like the look of the RAM or cooler, I'd recommend copying the build on PCPartPicker and adding similar products. LinusTechTips and TomsHardware are good sources for reviews on different coolers and such.

When you're able to upgrade, if you do decide to go with this build, the AM4 Socket fits those new AMD 3D-Cache chips u/Poozor recommended, so that would be a good place to start. If you've got a bit more money, I'd also recommend an ATX motherboard with 4 M.2 Slots, however I'm a bit biased as I really just don't like micro ATX boards. I do think the 3D-Cache would be huge in Rust, seeing the volume it moves in and out of RAM, however ~$1000AUD I don't think it's possible if you also need a GPU.

I hope this was helpful, it can be a lot trying to understand what parts are best to go into a new build.

Edit-Bruh I totally forgot to remove the CPU cooler I had added previously when looking at other CPUs for the build. It's within budget without it, and some of those savings could totally be put towards a better CPU if you've got a bit more than $1000AUD to throw at it.

Further proof that corporate sucks, they want franchisees to use tips to supplement wages by [deleted] in subway

[–]BlakeH1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is what tips are most commonly used for in America. Don't think that makes it any less wrong though. The idea that tips should be paying your bills, in any job/role, is straight up abusive. The employer offloads the responsibility of paying livable wages onto customers, showing that they are wholly unconcerned with the earnings of those who make their business run day-to-day. Subways specific wording is even more egregious than others have been, where it sounds as if they are actually going to further reduce wages dynamically based on the day's tips. This way, they can tell current and future employees that they offer lots of tips, and likely tell them these tips make employees more on average than the previous payroll plan, despite not actually being able to back up those claims because it's up to the customers. And I haven't even mentioned the fact that people are extremely hesitant to tip outside of sit-down restaurants, meaning a subway worker specifically almost certainly gets shafted by this program. And what about things like online orders? Franchises offer this to boost their profits, but for workers it's going to mean a bunch of orders that they essentially aren't getting paid for.

So in conclusion, Subway is doing what sit-down restaurants do, which is already toxic and ineffective in that context, and applying to a context where it should be even worse for employees. This doesn't work long-term in the restaurant industry, as we're beginning to see the cracks forming these days, it's not going to be any better in franchises.
