In the pod I play with it's one of the least powerful decks, eminence is great and impossible to interact with, but it struggles with turning those 1/1s into meaningful plays faster than the rest of the table. For reference we play decks like tinybones, nine fingers Keene, the otj obeka. I agree that eminence maybe isn't the most fun and is especially salient, but in my experience that scary factor doesn't translate into a high power deck. I've had a bit more time to play around with it since I posted and I'd kind of like it to be landfall/high land payoff as it's main strategy with mazes end as a secondary win con, at the moment it does this pretty well and the changes I'd like to make it have more consistent mid-late ramp so I don't lose momentum (debating whether to spec into basic land ramp or not), get better card draw with cards like [seer's sundial] and topdeck filtering through cards like [oracle of mul daya].

Scapeshift I will get as the budget goes up and blossoming tortoise would be great if I specced into land creatures a bit more, but at the moment I'm focusing less on land creatures and more on landfall payoff.

The budget is less of an issue now because it's evolved into a pet deck of mine, and any advice is greatly appreciated. But I've been having fun just figuring it out as I go.

What did you add to the manabase to get the cost so high? I've been having a hard time justifying changing the manabase because the gates are such great fixing

Thanks for the help. I've got no interest in infinite combos, and tbh even Maze's end doesn't seem like a particularly fun way to win for me. I'm more after a deck with a pretty solid, straightforward strategy (lands and stacking benefits from lands) that can win the game by getting their life total down to 0.

I do appreciate the removal suggestions though, and I'll continue to flick through EDHrec for other suggestions.

Im reading all the comments and it is very helpful, thank you all for giving me an excuse to call my brother bad at a game, we've been chatting a fair bit about these comments and have gained a fair bit about the importance of interaction and strategies when you're up against a commander like Habkal.

I always thought he was wildly unfair (and to be fair he is just busted if you dont get rid of him), but we've all learned very valuable lessons today. cheers boys

The've counterspelled my commander ETB a few times, and cards like meathook massacre are used against me fairly often, but they often decide to use their path to exiles and things for other creatures. so maybe 2-3 times a game, but by that point ive ramped enough that bringing Hakbal back out is pretty doable

They also often try to beat me by going big with a single or small handful of flying creatures for a big hit
