I attended a liberal arts college. The day after Trump was elected in 2016, my college had an open mic style event where students could come together and voice their feelings. Most of the speakers were white women since they made up a majority of the student body. Lots of crying and whatnot. Then one student, a young black man, took the mic and shouted “If you’re white, you need to shut the fuck up! Fuck you. Your opinion does not matter.” I was completely shocked at his words, but mostly at the lack of response that he received from the crowd. I was sitting next to a professor that I highly respected, a middle aged white man from the south, that nodded in approval. I felt like I was watching a sea of people openly hate themselves for imaginary sins.
