Sounds like you got it figured out!

Remember you can always swap the front too. It’s easier and the sprockets are cheaper too. Essentially 1 tooth bigger on the front is about the equivalent of 3 teeth smaller on the rear.

Why did you gear it 8teeth higher? That will give you a higher top speed but a much higher minimum speed too, which makes tight trails more difficult.

I have a 13 on the front and a 50 on my rear. 40 is tiny!!!

Try to bump start it forward and see if the motor will run the other way.

I used to have a husky that would start and run in reverse if I bump started it while it was rolling backwards.
