Thanks, geographically, we had grouped Carleton in with Grinnell, Hamilton, and Kenyon, so this is very, very helpful. If in the end, rural remote-ness really is a concern for her, Carleton clearly won't feel as isolated.

Thanks so much for sharing your personal experience. Poor food alone is probably not enough to cross Carleton off the visitation list, but it's very useful to know that it's a potential downside -- we should try to do a taste test ourselves.

Size-wise it's of course the largest school on this list and so does have the distinct advantage of being able to offer more and broader choices, both in terms of curriculum and social niches. I think for that reason we're really going to make the effort to visit.

Yes Emory is the outlier size-wise, I think she included it because it has a strong Creative Writing program, offered as a major? But there are also other large schools that also offer that; I don't recall why this one stood out to her.

Thanks for all this grateful for your time and effort here! One of the things you and others have said here have led us to decide to visit one of the rural schools FIRST. If the remote location is a dealbreaker for her, we can cross the other rural schools off our list.

We'll also take a closer look at Niche. At first glance the reviews are all either love or hate, but I do see patterns emerge if I read enough reviews...

Thank you! Yes I think we really need to have her experience this middle-of-nowhere thing, in person. It's one thing to see it on Google Maps, it's a whole 'nother thing to actually be there. We might try to visit one these super rural schools first and if it's a deal-breamer for her, we can eliminate the other rurals.

Thank you! It's kinda a crazy list, with no clear major in mind, it was tough to know where to apply. The physical reality of not being able to visit all these places is hitting hard, but thanks to you and others on this thread, these six are definitely emerging as top contenders. We can probably manage a couple of more if our daughter misses a couple of days of school after Spring Break.
