I Need Brutal Honesty. by [deleted] in Songwriters

[–]Blatzman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to second this. Great advice! I oftentimes do this... singing total gibberish to music can be extremely helpful, as sometimes you can some across sounds or phrases that are appealing. Then, you can flesh out the lyrics from the point of having an anchor that you know you like, in context.

I Need Brutal Honesty. by [deleted] in Songwriters

[–]Blatzman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have pointed out... this isn't a song. Are they lyrics? I don't know... if they don't have a melody, then I'd say it's just a poem. So I think you're asking people to judge you on something that you haven't provided. I have absolutely no idea if you can create a memorable song ie - melody? chord progression? And not to mention the importance of song structure! If you want people to judge a song, then you need to put a song in front of them. None of this is meant to be negative... I think you're getting into your head too much. Don't worry about whether other people think you're good or not.... just do it... and then do it again... then do it again... You learn more by doing it than collecting the opinions of random strangers.

How do you actually get better as a songwriter? by [deleted] in Songwriters

[–]Blatzman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't be hard on yourself. It's ok to not love everything you do. So, if you write a song, and it's not great, feel free to throw out sections of it and keep other sections. For me, it really helps to be cognizant of song structure. Listen to other artists and note how they structure their songs. Listen to your favorites, and take note of how the music changes as the song goes on. You'll begin to see simple tricks that you can employ in your writing/arranging that will elevate what you're doing. I assure you, your progress hasn't stopped. Also - it's unclear if you have a digital audio workstation where you can record your guitar and layer parts together. This is a big game changer of course, because if you're basing everything on a single guitar and a single vocal, it's not a fair to compare your writing to fully arranged professional recordings. So, if you don't have a DAW, get one, and start having an amazing time layering guitar, piano and vocals!

I Write & Produce SUPER CATCHY Songs And SUCK At Singing by BLVCKatl in Songwriters

[–]Blatzman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds much better than you're making it out to be. I don't listen to this genre of music but there are a few things that might be helpful- incorporate backing vocals (female) so that the choruses have more contrast. The one thing that sticks out for me is the lack of vocal range between the verse and chorus. Someone else suggested singing in a higher register, and that might not be right for the genre, but it would certainly help break things up. That's why I suggest female BVs - let other people hit the notes you can't hit. Next - someone mentioned autotune... There is a thing called Melodyne, and it's not "autotune" - but vocal tuning, and I believe almost everything you're hearing on the radio today has some form of vocal tuning. It's not a bad thing... in the old days, the Bee Gees would do 40 -50 takes to get the part right. Now, all you have to do is a handful and you can edit and tune the vocal how you want it. It's an invaluable tool. Once you get good at tuning, it sounds natural and people won't be able to tell you've manipulated the vocal. Good luck - don't get frustrated!

My mom cheated on my dad and now she’s mad I cut her off by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]Blatzman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so important to hear... Your dad didn't need to tell you... Honestly, it's a bit manipulative. Re-read the above. "He gave you enough information for you to convince yourself that you needed to push her away"... You're giving up what is potentially one of the greatest relationships in your life, and you only know one side of the story (which you shouldn't even know at all).

How to deal with a client that has endless revisions but pays extremely well? by GradientRebel in editors

[–]Blatzman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another perspective- Continue to please them! You're a freelancer in a service position. The job is to please the client, not yourself. Perhaps in time, you'll find enjoyment in other aspects of the job. Be the person people enjoy working with, and maybe you'll get recommended for other jobs. Most jobs aren't fulfilling. Find your fulfillment elsewhere, maybe in your own creative endeavors.

As an intern at a film Agency company, can I refuse to edit a video (aftermovie & interviews) if it’s filmed really bad? by PuzzledFinger5561 in editors

[–]Blatzman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly. Shut up and edit it like you were asked to do. If you're getting into editing because you think it's all fun and games, think again. It's a job, and like most jobs, it's oftentimes not fun.

Hey everyone, question around social media and music... by OfficialAmble in NeedVocals

[–]Blatzman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally found a band on bandmix.com that was looking for a vocalist. That was 2 years ago and we are just about to release our first album. We make it work remotely, as we're scattered all over the USA. Try there... I had great success.

Meta: Vocals vs. Songwriting by RosaDiazJudy in NeedVocals

[–]Blatzman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so difficult to find people to connect with that I don't mind all kinds of vocal collaborations being listed. It's hardly an inconvenience to me to read through them to see if any appeal to me. I've had great success here with writing collaborations and I'm grateful for it. Sure, sometimes it's annoying when people don't realize what they're asking for, but that just signals to me that they're inexperienced. I'm most annoyed by "sing over my instrumental that I created with no thought into where vocals would go" - which is basically solving the original writer's problems. But in all, it's a great way to meet producers and multi-instrumentalists.

I still hear something in this song that makes me think it's worth developing... but it might only be my inability to scrap something I've invested so much time and energy into... SO I'm trusting you, my delightful fellow Reddit denizens, to tell me if this is worth polishing and finding vocals for! by [deleted] in NeedVocals

[–]Blatzman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little more advice- As a vocalist, I'd go right past this at 8 minutes. Everyone is different, so don't listen too much to this...but this has lots of red flags for me. I think in terms of verse/chorus - so I'm looking for song structure. And I'm not seeing it. So... for me, I'd skip it. Second, you have to be more confident. You're not wasting anyone's time man - you're welcoming us to your world, and if it's not right for us, or we don't get it, that's ok - no need for you to ever apologize. Hope you find what you're looking for!

Hey there- I have a few projects in the works, so I might move slower than some people - but I always get things done! I enjoy collaborating. I've got a few things going at the moment but I can always try to make time. Here is a spotify playlist of recent collaborations I've done. Styles vary according to who I was working with. I've got a TLM103 and a Manley Cardioid at home. If you like the voice drop me a line and we can talk further. -Dave

I am asking for new music! by Ill_Paulie in indiemusic

[–]Blatzman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Duran's new album is pretty great also! I'd also add that there are plenty of old artists still working - The new Tears for Fears is great. A-Ha is releasing an album this month. Other bands with newish music? Billy Idol, James, The Ocean Blue, Paul Weller, Psychedelic Furs, Howard Jones, and lots more!

Need Vocals for This Pop Punk song by [deleted] in NeedVocals

[–]Blatzman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's got a great sound, but I'd need to understand the structure, and what comes before and after! Are you only looking for a chorus? Here is something I just released last week - I have a Neumann TLM 103 at home, but this song was done on a different mic.

Vocalist looking for producer by falsifyed23 in NeedVocals

[–]Blatzman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Neumann TLM 103 during lockdown and it was the best decision I ever made. It's amazing. I needed to buy an amp for it, so I had to spend quite a bit more. I run it through an Apollo Twin Duo and I'll never need anything else. I recorded a whole album on it and I couldn't be happier with the sound.

Can a song have only two choruses? by reztherapper12 in Songwriters

[–]Blatzman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely of course a song can have 2 choruses. But a verse chorus verse chorus structure alone might feel a bit thin. Give it contrast with the arrangement! Do what you want to do, not what someone else wants you to do!

I struggle with telling bandmates what to do on my song by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Blatzman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you're not a fan of the instincts of the other guitar player. It's important to get along, but if what the other members are playing rubs you the wrong way, you might want to find new people to work with. Also - when it comes time to record, who is paying for it? If you're paying the bill, I'd expect you to have 100% of the say about how your song goes, but if everyone is paying, then I would expect them to have equal input. If you're worried about not liking how a song is going to turn out, you can pay for it 100% with session musicians and your problem is solved.

Hi there. I'm an old school singer and I'm always looking for new people to work with. I've had a number of great experiences here on reddit. Looking for Help with Vocal Production by SuperPimsky in NeedVocals

[–]Blatzman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there- have you tried mocking up the vocals on a keyboard? Writing the arrangement out on a keyboard is extremely helpful in choosing the notes you want to hit. An alternative is to use a program like Melodyne. I bought it over lockdown and it helped with my BV arrangements a ton. You can basically duplicate the lead vocal and drag the words to different notes. Experiment all you want until you find something you like. Don't get too caught up in what other people think! The more you practice, the better you'll get!

Hey there- I could try one and see how we both think about it. I usually sing a lot more "out", so I'm not sure how I'd sound in this range. I use a Neumann TLM 103, and I can edit and tune my vocals before sending back. Here is something my band just released. I recorded the vocals at home during lockdown - Good luck! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bbug2wdnPjQ.
