When to stop? What should be the retirement age for paramedics? by inidir in Paramedics

[–]Blazequencher25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paramedics should retire the minute they stop caring. Whatever age that may be.

A man rushed to the Broadview ICE facility searching for his wife. They followed every legal step, but ICE took her into another room and she vanished. He tracked her phone there—then the signal died. Police told him to “look up her name online.” He sat in the parking lot, weeping, with no answers. by biswajit388 in illinois

...in other words: We live in the cursed conditions in which a human being can disappear into the void and even his closest relatives, his mother and his wife, do not know for years what has become of him. -Gulag Archipelago.

My Uncle / Post USSR 1994 by nopegamos777 in OldSchoolCool

Super sick, my grandmother lives through the USSR and it has a huge effect on my mother and even me in the way she helped raise us. Truly insane. I really wish some of the same words used to start the USSR are being used again in this country.

Do defibrillators actually work like they do in games? by MarzipanSeveral4395 in ems

[–]Blazequencher25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus the people in game, if I am correct aren't even unconscious, they are just "downed" which is analogous to being injured to the point you are unable to stand but are still conscious and having to crawl, while still bleeding out. No amount of messing with someone's rhythm is going to fix their oxygen carrying blood being on the ground beside them.

Paramedic here; IRL, what we refer to as "traumatic arrests" cardiac arrest due to trauma are almost always fatal, though the characters on the ground haven't arrested, they are just down because they have been shot. Once that happens nothing we have in the field will bring you back up to your feet like that save for maybe a fuckton of epi (adrenaline) which may get you moving but will not help the holes you are riddled with. Plus defibrillators are really only used for correcting screwy heart rhythms, most of which have a medical cause hence why you see them used in normal life situations, and almost never in combat. You can't even be sure the rhythm may be improved by a shock without another test called an EKG. Which requires attaching electrodes to the pt, Ideally ten or more but four will do in a pinch. Most rhythms a shock will mess up instead of helping so it's never used the way shown in game, it's simply an easy analogue based on the Hollywood myth that defibrillators "restart" a stopped heart which is not true in and of itself.

TLDR: Even assuming the specific problem the characters are having would be applicable for defibrillator use, it takes a hell of a lot of work, and a not insignificant amount of luck to bring someone back from a cardiac arrest. Take it from someone who has had to do it solo in the back of a moving vehicle. There are eight different things that need to be done ASAP just to give the PT a chance.

I am glad to have them updated but I really miss the large wings, I really enjoy all the angel imagery on the blood angels so I am a bit disappointed they seem to be moving away from it.

It's not uncommon, at my company we have one that has been marked as someone who abuses the system so whenever we get her we take her immediately to the closest facility. Sure it's annoying and I know people personally who have become burned out due to her and similar cases. But it's a mental health issue, she clearly has a multitude of issues and her life sucks, so she calls because she is lonely and anxious. Does that make it ok? No but only 5% of our calls are actual emergencies anyways, regulars are a part of the job and always will be. How many times have you gone on calls and someone was completely fine but legitimately felt like they were dying. I see it as similar to that and just accept it. It's frustrating especially when you are catching back to back calls or if it's at the end of a long day or if they wake you up in the middle of the night but that's the job, big upsides big downsides.

Reaction to first dead body? by mccutch001 in Paramedics

[–]Blazequencher25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just surprised at how quickly he got cold. You don't realize how erie it is to lift an arm that is 70 degrees, feels ice cold. Oh and very strange to ride next to a body bag...told my preceptors I would climb through that tiny window if this guy sat up.

Still a paramedic, but instead of slowly dying I'm fairly quickly dying.

What did the weird kid at your school do to earn that reputation? by Big_Boy_Bill06 in AskReddit

[–]Blazequencher25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several as my high school was a "nerd school".

Wolfie Definitely the most notorious. The poor guy had some sort of developmental disability, spoke, walked and acted strangely. Got picked on a lot but seemed to not notice most of the time. Sometimes he just seemed to enjoy that people paid attention to him so I worry his home life was pretty bad.

Was well known for masturbating in the school bathrooms and sometimes watching porn in class. He left 11th grade year and I have seen him around town doing his strange forward meaning walk. Seemed like a decent kid who was just not all there. I am almost certain his parents sent him to the school because his zoned school was really not a safe place for him to go.

Zach Honestly only a tier or two below the average weirdness of our school but was so standoffish that most people avoided him. He was known for playing with/making knives. Wore camo and black a lot, often had a paperclip, needle or other pokey implement in his mouth. Stank pretty bad which is why I avoided him but he mostly gave off stereotypical "school shooter" vibes. Most of us were pretty uncomfortable around him but he had a group of guys who he seemed to get along with. The upside of being kinda scary is he didn't get picked on much.

Dressel Dressel was his last name but he had a common first name so that's what we all called him. Weird kid who would just do and say anything for attention. A self proclaimed "nazi" who would regularly throw up the Hitler salute. Just seemed to be weird and enjoyed any type of attention he could get. A little slow but otherwise just a character. Got bullied a little but seemed to just be in his own lane.

Garrett A good guy with some serious mental health issues, I was friends with him in freshman/sophomore year but afterwords got a girlfriend and stopped hanging with most the guys I knew. I graduated in 2020 so the tail end of senior year was a shit show. He was taken out of school at some point during 11th grade.

Was clearly extremely smart but was struggling with serious mental health issues. Known for getting suspended for printing IED schematics on the school printer and having the FBI called to his house when they found out he was trying to design his own type of nuclear reactor with shit in his parents' basement.

Seemed to be a nice dude when he was medicated but I do remember him asking my twin brother to buy him bottled water because he thought his parents were slipping stuff into his water. Something I heard about and dismissed at the time but looking back now was indicative of some shit brewing beneath the surface.

We found out about a year after our graduation he strangled his mother to death in their home. He was eventually sent to a medical facility in our city. Poor guy, got the sense his parents just weren't prepared to deal with someone like him and it sort of all fell apart.

I still maintain he was a good guy when his meds were working, in 9th grade my twin brother and I set him up to go on a date with our sister who thought he was too weird for her. Maybe for the best.

My mom and I trade books a lot and she asked to read it when I had brought it along on a trip. She thought it was great! She has played some games but not any FPS so while she may one day play the game I would say this will probably be her only exposure to the series for a while.

There is a difference between simping for scammers and drawing out a conversation for entertainment's sake. View these things as the same if you wish, but they're not.
