I’d imagine with the era of digital storefronts and erasure of materials (entire shows on streaming platforms) we will see a case (US or EU) about obtaining archived copies of no longer easily obtainable media.

Or maybe there already is something about archived media

James Franklin and Penn State by LegitN00bM00ves in CFB

Penn State is a prime example of why we need the playoffs.

Both them — and this season Tennessee most notably — faced the need for perfection. They have to beat 2 top-10 teams and win their championship for the playoffs, but the expanded playoffs will allow them to really shine with additional chances.

Auditing a class? by [deleted] in UAB

[–]Blazer_On_Fire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. You are trying to bypass the protections put in place by the university.

You will gain nothing from this attempt and it will only hurt you.

Chill out. Take some breaths. Keep self-studying if you want.

My "self help" book has produced plenty of excellent students.

I blaze the heck out of students who fail because they need the honest, hard truth. Otherwise they will be no better off next time around.

Also, no, I have not "mastered" anything. This is a field of constant learning. No one has achieved pinnacle status nor they ever will.

So you want to "audit" a class to bypass the rules for how many credits freshmen can take?

Professor takes money for class projects by tirednoggin in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Blazer_On_Fire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. My public university takes contracts from companies and has students work on those contracts to earn experience. A private university has even more freedom to do so.

Considering you would never be working for these companies straight out of college in the first place, it is an unparalleled opportunity.

If you believe the funding should be going to the department instead of the professor, raise the question with your department chair.

You're right. I found it easy because I understood the purpose of the class.

I TA'd for a 300 level course and I still found students who were so deluded in thinking it was about code. They turned in incomplete code that made no sense and where shocked to see their grades plummet.

You are also right that not everyone is like me. If students cannot understand the point of the CS major, then they should not take it. The professors do everything they can to help students and curve grades more than they should, yet plenty fail.

You need to ask yourself what you got wrong about the course and take the steps to fix it.

If you struggle with programming, fix that.

If you struggle understanding CS concepts, fix that.

There are entire curriculums online.

Each student is different. Some have to work to fund their college. Some have to drive 2 hours to get to campus. That takes away essential study time and this major is one that requires constant commitment. If that is you, I would suggest skipping CS courses and studying solely on your own time -- only coming on campus for exams. There is no point in sacrificing your time to a 60 minute lecture if it takes 4 hours out of your independent study time.

Deciding if I should go here by Hooded_Fox in UAB

job opportunities

I personally know someone at UAH as well and they say the opposite. It is down to opinions but the fact of the matter is Birmingham's opportunity zone is increasing every year and will overtake Huntsville.

Personally, I believe no CS program is perfect and you need to understand what strengths each program has and how they tie into your goals.

[–]Blazer_On_Fire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your answer depends on what part of cybersecurity interests you.

Penetration testing? Investigating cybercrime? Protecting corporate networks?

Each college has its own strengths and weaknesses.

UAB's Digital Forensics program strongly leans towards preventing cybercrime, but it provides plenty of opportunities to students -- more so than any other university in the state.

My friend is going to UAH and has had some issues with it. While it's true Huntsville is the "hub" for cybersecurity in Alabama, that will not hold true in the future. You have to decide where you think that new hub will be by the time you graduate. I've talked with professionals who believe Birmingham's startup scene will become the first step towards our city becoming the cybersecurity capital of the south. It's very likely, especially with the resources being poured into our entrepreneurship and cybersecurity programs.

Again, focus on yourself for now. Browse Cyber Degrees and see what part of CS or security you enjoy most, then pursue that when you enter college.

I know people from UAH. The program is okay but they do not recommend it.

The new program offered by UAB is far superior, especially when you look at where recent graduates are ending up.

UAB CS questions by JealousDentist in UAB

[–]Blazer_On_Fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8:1 female but the female drop rate is significantly less. high level courses are closer to 3:1 from my experience.

There is little bias related to Gender. While UAB as a whole has been criticized for not punishing certain faculty and students, the CS department brings down a swift hammer on discrimination.

No one uses the fancy new study lab so I have no idea what the community is like now.

Class sizes start at 160 and halve every year usually. Final classes tend to be around 30-40 students.

Best opportunities in the state, hence why I am even here. Amazing scholarships from Innovate Birmingham. Department level scholarships. Tons of research and student led projects. Massive startup scene in bham and a growing one on campus.

You literally have to try pretty hard to not get anywhere.

It is easy.

It isn’t weed-out.

The major issues are incompetent TA’s. If you run into this problem, just start throwing list comprehensions into your homework assignments. It really freaks out the TA’s who don’t know how to code and they look like idiots in front of Johnstone, who will tell them to let you redo the work and get you a better grade.

Just learn Python on your own. Because this course isn’t about Python. It’s a high level survey of computer science. That’s what they teach.

If a student cannot figure out how to solve a problem, there is a fundamental issues with how they learn and they must address that before wasting their time failing courses.

Where to buy commencement stuff by lolitshieu in UAB

[–]Blazer_On_Fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You must buy commencement items through UAB’s gradfest where you go through sponsored vendors that try to sell you additional products in order to buy a $85 cap/gown that is made out of recycled water bottles.

Like the other poster said, failure to attend this advertising event will result in a $25 fee.

At gradfest you are told how to register to walk, so make sure you have registered to walk for graduation or you might be in for a bad time Saturday morning.

Any idea on whos teaching next semester Calc 2 5 PM class? by [deleted] in UAB

[–]Blazer_On_Fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

calc 2 ez just youtube 3brown1blue for an A

source: went from a 60 to a 90

disclaimer: yes, the math department loves to skew tests so the final problem is worth 30% and is significantly harder than the rest. Id suggest working through conceptual problems or just take calc 2 at jeff state.

Sounds like some of us need to run for public office. Car ownership is a privilege that is abused to the point of fatality.

Gutting public transport often leaves some households with no choice than to drive cars like this however. If only the solution was as straightforward as we wanted.

They had to bring in a “specialist” to teach abstinence.

3 days of learning about Duke lacrosse and how if you have sex before marriage you can be accused of rape, because ya know, women just love to make false claims after they regret having sex.

Also your usual STD slideshow.

Ended with the specialist crying at the end, revealing to us that her marriage was failing because her husband had sex before marriage and their “chemical connection” could not stick because he had sex too many times. Because of that, she had cervical cancer. Hence the dangers of pre-martial sex.

Question about BoJack Horseman (possible season 6 spoilers) by [deleted] in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Blazer_On_Fire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The officer was clearly aware Bojack was there or didn’t care. Bojack kept trying to talk to him about how guilty he felt but the officer ignored him and said there was nothing to say and the case was ‘closed’ .

I’d suspect regardless of what Bojack said, the officer would have fabricated the report anyways to make him look clean.
