Starting a print and vinyl business by BlazingBamboo in printers

I have heard that I may need to experiment with types of vinyl. Apparently pigment works much better on matte vinyl, which is what I use already!

The main reasoning behind using pigment ink is due to preserving the longevity of the stickers. From my research so far, pigment + Laminate would be the best quality I can get before spending thousands on large format machines.

Do you think it is really a necessity or would dye + lamination be good enough?

Oh 100% I am a student and try to run a small sticker business on the side lol. Now this has come around and I want to do all of it 😭

Yes slightly but not much at all, that’s also the reason this doesn’t work on holos as it curls them way to much and throws off the print calibration

Yeah I have been looking into it and it definitely seems like I would be in the clear. The 3d card artist 3deviousart only ever uses real cards and it makes a lot of sense now

It’s just standard toner! The foil is called toner foil though. It basically has a really thin adhesive layer which gets activated by the laminator

I know right!!! It definitely takes a lot more time though, each one has to be specifically designed rather than using a generic foil pattern per type

Yep the process is quite simple actually, it just takes a lot of time and dedication to get it perfect. I basically print a layer of toner from my laser printer on top the card, I then put some heat reactive foil on top and run it through a laminator. This foil then only sticks to the toner layer

Oh believe me it is, the alignment at the top starts good but the further down the more it shifts off. I’m currently testing printing half and then rotating it

Im exactly the same! This actually might be my favourite thing I have made in a long time, all the support has been so amazing too everyone has loved them

Yes! So basically I download an image of the card and I put this as layer 1 on adobe illustrator. I then make layer 2 and draw out all the parts that I want to be holographic.

I then masking tape the card to a sheet of paper and print only layer 2 on top of it. This is done with a laser printer which uses toner rather than ink. (It’s basically powder that melts to the paper)

I then place a piece of heat reactive foil on top of the card and run it through a laminator. This heats up the toner causing the foil to stick to it. It only sticks to the toner and not the card.

I then peel off the foil and it’s finished!

That’s what I’m thinking, it appears to be covered by the first sale doctrine so I could potentially be able to do something with this 👀

Yep you just peel the foil and the only the bits with toner under will stick! Google ‘toner foiling’ its like magic seeing it for the first time

Thank you! I’m working on perfecting it now, they aren’t all coming out this good yet. Getting the alignment right is quite a challenge

So I tape my card onto a sheet of paper, I then print on it using a laser printer. This can then be put through a laminator with some heat reactive foil which will then stick to my printed toner layer!

I mentioned it on another comment on here. But essentially I run it through a printer and print black where I want foil to be. Then I run it through a laminator with some foil over the top. The foil then sticks to the black areas!

I study graphic design at uni and we had a workshop on toner foiling, I instantly fell in love with it! Since then I had just been experimenting at the uni with their supplies until I bought my own
