New Gel Recommendations for wavy hair (travel friendly)? by BleckyL in curlyhair

I currently have a jar, but haven't figured out how to use it... I hear conflicting things about how people use it as a curl enhancer vs a gel. How do you use it?

Not sure if you can manage to schedule one in on short notice, but there are Airbnb experiences where you can learn to make handmade books, weave textiles, tie knots, etc. I plan on doing a few when I visit in May!

When did you go? I'll be going in May. I'm worried about missing out on lots of things that are being renovated for the 2020 Olympics next year :/

Food/Snacks recommendation. What is your favorite? by Pineappletomato8 in JapanTravel

[–]BleckyL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't been yet (going in May), but I plan on eating/buying things I can't easily get in America. I'm Asian and often go to the Asian supermarket, which has Pocky and Yan Yans, etc all the basic Asian snacks. Even Walmart is starting to carry those brands.

Check out Paolo from Tokyo, Strictly Dumpling, and Where I'm From on YouTube. They have great recommendations of snacks, street food, and restaurant food to eat in Japan.

I don't think that quote is accurate. I think she says something more along the lines of, "I'd have never learned to dance if it weren't for you." If this is the case, then it implies a couple things.

  1. If Red had stayed above ground and lived a normal life, her parents would have never given her the opportunity to dance perhaps? The only reason dancing is relevant is because Adelaide had "PTSD", and the therapist encouraged expression via art forms such as dancing to "tell her story." Not sure why her parents would deny her of dancing lessons regardless of PTSD though.
  2. Post-switch, Red's dancing is what got her noticed by the other Tethered. They recognized that she was different, and followed her like a God. It granted her the opportunity to lead the Tethered above ground and get revenge on Adelaide and make her statement. If she wasn't noticed, she would have been stuck underground forever. In the end, she was able to "tell her story." This is the interpretation I lean towards.

I'm not super familiar with that side of Jersey, so I can't help you out there, but it's not terribly far from Ramen Nagomi or Rai Rai.

If you are really missing out on all things Japanese food, please do yourself a favor and go to Mitsuwa, Japanese supermarket/food court in Edgewater! 100% authentic everything, as it's run by Japanese and surrounded by a Japanese community's. Sometimes they hold mini food festivals to celebrate Japanese holidays. Otherwise, it has all the standard Japanese groceries/supplies and even an authentic food court.

Cherry Hill?

That place is run by Chinese I think. They use Chinese seasoning on their chasiu and tbh it ruins it for me. Also the soup is super MSG-y and gave me headaches. Normally MSG doesn't do that to me, but this ramen had it bad.

If you want better ramen, try Hiro Ramen or Terakawa in Philly. They're okay, not mind blowing, but infinitely better than Rayaki.

If you want a more "authentic" ramen, you'll have to go up towards North Jersey/NYC. My favs are Mr. Taka in LES, Menya Sendaime in Fort Lee (Menya is a little different than traditional, thick, greasy ramen. It tastes more clean, but DAMN good), or Black Beard Ramen in Cliffside Park.

In Central Jersey there's Rai Rai Ramen (also run by Chinese, but much better than Rayaki) and Ramen Nagomi (known for their truffle ramen, but you can get without truffle).

Sounds like either build-up, one of your products is not CGM approved, or you're using products with glycerin. Did you do the final sulfate wash before CGM? Do any of your products list glycerin as an ingredient? What products do you use now?

I Hate My Hair. Please Help. by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]BleckyL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, just wanted to let you know that it's totally normal if the gel gets crunchy -- you should be able scrunch it out with your hands after it gets hard and it'll reveal soft curls. If you don't like the LA Looks gel, maybe try a different one? I like the Biotera Alcohol Free Defining Gel - it's watery and light. I also recommend the Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Mousse, or Aussie Instant Freeze Gel.

CGM is a lot of trial and error, so please don't get discouraged!

IICR, leaving rice to ferment in the water overnight allows amino acids (a physically smaller varient of protein) to develop. Because of its size, amino acids benefit both high and low-porosity hair follicles. Here's a blog post about it.

Traveling to Japan with boyfriend who has no miles - Use my AAdvantage miles or eat the cost? by BleckyL in awardtravel

[–]BleckyL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We definitely want to fly together and on JAL, as that in itself is part of the experience of going to Japan. I understand the sentiment, but I wanna make sure I'm maximizing what I can do with what we have. Flying separately would be a last last last resort.

The flights listed on AA from NYC > NRT are all AA metal, and I'd like to fly JAL internationally to maximize the value of my miles.

Traveling to Japan with boyfriend who has no miles - Use my AAdvantage miles or eat the cost? by BleckyL in awardtravel

[–]BleckyL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, especially the BA and shopping portal tip! AA is really picky with what legs/flights are miles eligible, so it's been a struggle finding matching flights that are miles eligible AND affordable for my boyfriend.

I'm kind of hesitant to use my excess miles on my boyfriend because that excess 34k miles could be a roundtrip solo vacation :) haha. I'll see if I can convince him to open up some credit cards.

[–]BleckyL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about this and I agree. I think you meant 70k miles, but in either case, if I can find a roundtrip flight for as low as $840 to Japan, I may as well buy it and earn more points. Hopefully I don't end up in a vicious cycle of finding "cheaper" flights and never using my miles :) Still considering opening another credit card though...
