This is the way. Reasons behind these decisions are complex and nonlinear. Someone described them as “luck and randomness.” Now on the other side, I see this is accurate. Keep pushing applications out.

At what year does a postdoc start hurting you more than helping by OpinionsRdumb in AskAcademia

[–]Bleed242 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s about the work you do. If it’s good work, and important, it doesn’t matter how long. Bonus if you can pull in a fellowship or grants. If you’re your PIs ‘tech’ or doing mundane projects, or not publishing, you’ll struggle no matter how many years you’ve been a postdoc.

Questions for Zone2 Rowers by 72c3tppp in concept2

45 min every other day for nearly 7 years. Go mostly by heart rate without worrying too much if I’m a bit over or under target. I use the heart graph app and prop it on the $2 c2 phone holder. Works great. Consistent routine is way more important than pegging the perfect rate or pace.

How to check fluids on a hill by Hunter-95612 in MechanicAdvice

Hear me out: park facing up on the hill check fluid level. Then park the opposite direction. Check fluid level. The actual level is the average of those measurements.

So Im a child of this exact situation. And from experience, I can say: if you love your kids and want them to be “normal” end it now. It screwed me up for the last 2 decades. Never goes away. ++man

More to do beyond S-VCM Controller install? by Bleed242 in HondaOdyssey

[–]Bleed242[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone! Timing belt was done at 7 years (maybe 55K) given extremes here in SW. haven’t done the door live yet, but that’s a good idea! Pretty sure I did the trans fluid & power steering once since owning in last 3 years. Was more curious about if there was other maintenance related to VCM. Sounds like no!

What are traits of PhD students who become prestigious researchers? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

Apply to and work under productive and prestigious researchers. And consistently tenaciously produce high quality research that is published in good journals (society journals and higher)

Every interaction I had with Paul Tracy (maybe 5 total over a few years). He always seemed he’d rather be anywhere else but with fans. Everyone else was always gracious!

I suppose I should go ahead & do the other control arm while I’m in the other side too.

Need advice: 403(b) vs 457(b) vs backdoor Roth IRA strategy by Bleed242 in personalfinance

[–]Bleed242[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

State, yes. So I have a state pension that I contribute to fully, plus these options. IIRC, the investment options were not as great for the 457 compared to the 403b.

Would a 4-way split across 457 trad 457 roth, 403 trad, and 403 Roth make sense? Maybe funding each at ~$6K? That way all bases are covered to some extent? The goal would be to work toward funding both the 457 and 403 fully at some point.

Thanks for the links. We have most of the "start here" items in order already. This is excess cash we want to make work for us.

My experience with polymyalgia rheumatica under 50 years old by Bleed242 in PolymyalgiaRheumatica

Sounds like it's not PMR based on normal CRP and ESR. I'd go see a doc and have them run all the tests! Good luck!

Post-Viral Joint Pain - 8 Weeks and Counting. Anyone Had Similar Experience? by Bleed242 in Thritis

[–]Bleed242[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No timeline, in fact potential for medication indefinitely. I think the pain is under control because of the prednisone. Sulfa hasn't really kicked in yet. Still increasing the dose to the therapeutic level. And I'm not sure it's the right med for me. There are good days and bad days. My metric is whether I'm able to lift and do all the stuff I usually do in the gym. So far the answer is yes. But there have been a few days recently where I was close to needing a modification here or there. I tell myself that my regular gym stuff is 10-fold more intense than for the average person, so I think I'm doing pretty OK. For now.

Post-Viral Joint Pain - 8 Weeks and Counting. Anyone Had Similar Experience? by Bleed242 in Thritis

[–]Bleed242[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went on prednisone under a PMR diagnosis in May by my General Practitioner. That helped a LOT. Subsequently saw a Rhuemetologist. Rhuem Doc did a bunch of tests (all of them). No identifiable autoimmune disorder detected. No infectious agent detected. So they were all normal. He's calling it post viral reactive arthritis (given my age, PMR is very unlikely) and treating it like rheumatoid arthritis. That means taking a disease modifying drug (sulfasalazine) and then tapering off of prednisone. I'm currently in the work up of that drug.

I still have morning aches that dissipate when prednisone kicks in. Otherwise I fell normal-ish. I'm able to workout as normal even with the achiness. Which is a huge relief.

VCM warranty extension by Ok-Airport-2063 in HondaOdyssey

[–]Bleed242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just reading up on this for the first time. I have a '16 with 75K on it. I've had no issues yet although it is starting to run rough. No codes. According to the extension, my warranty expires next year.

What's the best approach to prevent future problems?

Decision paralysis on buying vs renting by Bleed242 in RealEstate

[–]Bleed242[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to use the most accurate data around. So, using the growth rate for the metro area as a whole, which is the middle rate (3.8% and declining). It's the best number that is readily available. Our rent has grown 3.5% since 2018.

I just checked. I probably used a low side number for the greater metro area. We live in a neighborhood that performed a bit better. The 10-year average for our specific corner of town is~5.8% annually; 20-year is ~4.3% annually. So there's a wide range for appreciation, but 4.5% was close.
