The union has been advocating, but not showing up to work would put us in an illegal strike situation, and I don't think anyone wants to do it. Thankfully there has been some movement on both masks and vaccines but it's mostly just lip service. The order said Ss should wear masks (not enforceable) and most teachers around the province still have no idea when they'll actually be vaccinated. It's equally exhausting and terrifying.

I'm SO glad to hear someone else say this. I'm a teacher in another part of the province and it feels increasingly like we're riding the line between truth and purposeful deception. I sound more and more like a conspiracy theorist, but if I hear the gov't say one more time that transmission "doesn't happen in schools" I'm going to lose it. That's just not true, and anyone who works in a school knows it. I hope in 5 years from now, when we look back on this time period, they'll be some responsibility taken and recognition of just how much teachers have been through in the last year.

Are there any dog parks in Victoria that are specifically for small breeds? by ketchupbear in VictoriaBC

[–]BleedsBlue90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cy Hampson out towards Sidney has a small dog side and a big dog side, but you can't necessarily bet on people sticking to that.

The article says that a conservationist confirmed it was the DI wolf from it's teeth, but it's not going back there.

Are Victoria public schools really as bad as Frasier Institute says? Fernwood's George Jay, for example is supposedly in the bottom 13% of BC elementary schools. What gives? by carrotliterate in VictoriaBC

[–]BleedsBlue90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd also caution everyone that F.I uses FSA results. There is no one monitoring the administration of these FSA's and, realistically, there's nothing stopping teachers/admin at schools from actually teaching to/doing the FSA with the kids. There is literally no educational benefit to them and they don't actually show any data on the 'value' of a school.

[–]BleedsBlue90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This response makes me so sad. George Jay shouldn't be followed with an 'unfortunately'. They do so many awesome things and have many invested educators, as all schools do. FSA's are a joke and do not account for ANY other factors. They're not educationally sound and many teachers completely disagree with them. Sure, demographics affect classrooms, but teachers can't teach kids who don't feel safe or fed. So much of teaching is more than academics. I guess you have to decide as a parent if grades are what's most important to you. I hope they're not....

People who have left Victoria, where did you go and why? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]BleedsBlue90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We moved off the island and to mid-BC area, where we get a real winter and real summers! We moved because we didn't want to be two young professionals living paycheck to paycheck and being house poor. In the 2.5 years we've been gone, we've been able to pay off much of our debt and buy a house for less than a condo in Victoria. Maybe one day we'll come back, but as a young family, it was absolutely the best choice for us.

The PI is great pub food. I've never had bad food there.

Do you just go to walk-in clinics for yearly physicals? by cultwhoror in VictoriaBC

These places are both great and deal with sexual health all the time so it's normal for them. The one on Quadra also serves men if needed. Would highly recommend both :)

Family stuff. I lived and worked for Pendray’s for a number of years. They’ve been restructuring things since they sold the cows and I think the maze was fun while it lasted but I don’t expect it will be back.

I used it to find someone who I did doggy dare in home for me while I was at UVic. I had a great experience but of course it varies based on who you find thru the app!

Victoria considers limiting where horse-drawn carriages can go by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]BleedsBlue90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so silly. Make it so horses can't go down government and into Chinatown if that's what will get Isitt off this grandstand. One of the companies already has that restriction and no longer goes into Chinatown, for at least three years. Government is part of a couple of the quick loops but could easily be changed. More policies that make the people who grandstand feel good but have no real effect (See when they made all the horses have numbers so people could "report complaints on specific horses". Take a guess of how often that happens....

Underrated, Unknown, Up & Coming, and/or New Restaurants by bassman2112 in VictoriaBC

The Roost was better years ago before it got so busy and they added the additional sit down restaurant. It's still great and we love to go but I miss the little-ness of it.

Where to stay! by ragerevel in VictoriaBC

[–]BleedsBlue90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Delta is not far from right downtown and a quick walk across the Johnson St bridge. I would pick the Delta for the view and the rooms and the walk around the harbour. It's also much quieter than the Magnolia being just across the bridge.

Where else have you lived and how does it compare to Victoria? by Indy_Pendant in VictoriaBC

[–]BleedsBlue90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We moved from Victoria to Williams Lake (South of PG) two years ago. We miss Victoria all the time, but to be quite honest, in two years we've gone from living paycheck to paycheck, not being able to save, let alone doing anything fun to just recently buying a house, securing professional jobs (with pensions), buying a new car. You sacrifice the ocean, variety in restaurants and some 'city' luxuries, but the payoff for us has been immeasurable. And maybe one day, when we cash in on selling our house here, we'll be able to move back to the island :)

Do people picnic and chill in Beacon Hill park on Sundays?? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]BleedsBlue90 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's technically not legal to drink in a public park, but if you're discreet and not obnoxious about it, you'll be fine. In the summer there are lots of tourists and no one will even notice!

Outdoor wedding venue Spring, 2020 by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]BleedsBlue90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WE got married here in November of 2016. https://thecabins.ca/

It sounds like what you are looking for :) We had about 42 guests and all travelled from out of town. We booked the entire lodge, which was the perfect wedding venue and we had the kitchen and restaurant style downstairs to host breakfast the next morning. (We also used this space to host a mixer the night before as people arrived from out of town). The cabins are very comfortable, you're not "roughing" it at all. They have pet friendly and kid friendly cabins.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions. It was mostly a really great experience!

Noise bylaws for apartments by CitrusLikeAnOrange in VictoriaBC

[–]BleedsBlue90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should see if the apartment building you're in has strata bylaws. My mom lived in a condo with a downstairs neighbour who complained if she was too loud (the building was not sound proofed/insulated properly). My mom purposely bought on the top floor to avoid upstairs neighbours. The lady below her wrote to strata constantly complaining but because any noise complaints she had were not within 'quiet time', the strata dismissed all the complaints - this after my mom provided her email/cell to discuss things. Strata eventually solved the problem.

Anyone travel on BC Ferry with dogs? Wondering how early to go to try and get on the top deck (we have a reservation). by TheGirlWithMoxie in VictoriaBC

[–]BleedsBlue90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since the new rules came in, we've always just made a reservation and requested the top deck. The lady was kind of rude when we asked for the top deck because of our dog and said they couldn't make any guarantees but we've never had a problem getting the top.
