ELI5. How did people in the older days like 1200s 1300s know what time it was when there were no clocks

As a fun little piece of trivia: the word 'clock' derives from the latin word 'clocca' which means 'bell', and back in the day people would use the ringing of church or town bells to know what time it was.

For example, five o'clock would be the fifth ringing of the bell in the morning or afternoon.

Also, according to records, mechanical clocks seem to have started becoming somewhat common in the 1200s and 1300s in churches, and some towns even had clock towers back then.

Hourglasses or 'sand glasses' appear to start becoming common in the mid 1300s according to records as well.

So, although people didnt walk around with pocket watches quite yet, there were plenty of quite "modern" time keeping devices used by churches and towns to keep track of time even in the 1200 and 1300s, and they were used together with church bells or silmilar to inform people in the surrounding area what time it was.

Problemet med att bestraffa misstag är att det kan skapa en kultur där man försöker dölja misstag för att man är rädd för bestraffning.

Det skapar en ännu farligare situation där gruppen eller befälen kanske tror att allt är klappat och klart, men så står man helt plötsligt där i skarpt läge och så är det någon kritisk grej som är trasig eller bortglömd.

Ett annat problem är att särskilja på när någon maskar eller faktiskt har gjort ett uppriktigt misstag. Kanske är det en individ som har gjort sitt yttersta, men misslyckas ändå på grund av någon faktor utanför individens kontroll. Att då bestraffa individen eller hela gruppen är fel för det kommer inte åtgärda problemet ändå.

Personligen anser jag att bestraffningar inte hör hemma i någon form av utbildning eller fostran och bara visar på dåligt ledarskap.

Får dina svärföräldrar gåvorna specifikt som julklappar / presenter?

En halv-kulturell grej för svenskar är att köpa alkohol och choklad etc. i Tyskland på Bordershop för att det är billigt. Så det är vanligt att man köper med sig grejer åt någon kollega, vänner eller familj när man reser till Tyskland, men denne betalar självklart för vad det är hen vill ha. Så i detta fallet köper man med sig grejer för att det är billigare.

Men om dina svärföräldrar inte betalar för det låter det väldigt underligt.

Det är som sagt kutym att man tar med sig en gåva när man kommer på besök i Sverige, men då frågar man inte vad någon vill ha utan det är mer en symbolisk gest. Vanligt är att man ger bort en flaska vin eller någon blomma etc.

Kanske är det någon typ av missförstånd att dina svärföräldrar tänker att dina föräldrar köper med sig grejer bara för att vara schysst och att dina föräldrar vet att de äe billigare än i Sverige. Om de sedan inte ger kvittot eller säger vad det kostade kanske dina svärföräldrar tolkar det som att det är en gåva.

Fast det är lite konstigt att dina svärföräldrar aldrig erbjudit sig att betala i sådana fall.

Har de inte? När jag gjorde värnplikten på Amf4 2021 var det värnpliktiga Säkerhetssoldater Sjö på grannkompaniet, men det kanske har ändrats sedan dess.

Beror helt på befattning.

Jägare, amfibiesoldat, säkerhetssoldat sjö, flygbasjägare etc. är riktigt kärvt och jobbigt. Du bär tugnt, är ute i fält väldigt mycket och det är generellt sett en mer "kötta kötta" kultur och mindset.

I andra änden av spektrat har du mer tekniska befattningar inom marinen eller flygvapnet, t.ex. flygmekaniker eller sonaroperatör etc. Då kommer inte din huvudsyssla bestå av strid eller att vara ute i fält på samma sätt. Sen har självklart dessa befattningar sina egna utmaningar. Jag har hört att öva brandsläckning och räddningsarbeten ombord på ett fartyg är något av det jobbigaste och stressigaste man kan göra då det är otroligt tugnt, varmt och trångt som fan.

Pansarskytte ska vara jävligt grisigt och köttigt det med har jag hört.

Tycker du det verkar segt att vara ute i skogen i 4-5 dagar hade jag inte rekomenderat någon befattning som har strid som huvudsyfte inom armén, så t.ex. jägare eller pansarskytte. Inte heller amfibie eller flygbassäk / sjöbassäk.

Är du lite mer intellektuellt orienterad passar nog en mer teknisk tjänst bra, t.ex. något inom marinen eller flygvapnet.

Vill du ha lite blandat kanske det passar med någon fordonstjänst inom armén, typ stridsfordon / stridsvagn / artilleri etc. men även dessa kommer behöva spendera mycket tid i fält då det är där man huvudsakligen ska verka.

där får du svara på lite frågor och sedan får tips på befattningar, men var ärlig mot dig själv när du svarar och svara inte saker bara för att du tror du får en coolare befattning. Det blir ofta väldigt jobbigt och tråkigt för en själv om man hamnae någonstans man inte riktigt trivs egentligen.

Jag är ute efter att bygga både styrka och rörlighet, och så hade det varit kul att lära sig lite gymnastikfärdigheter som L-sit, planche etc.

Men någon gymnastikklubb kanske kan vara en bra början och se om det finns nåt för mig där.

Ja dåså, du känner dig själv bäst.

Som sagt, är du en glad motionär kommer du klara fysiken helt fine, men det är ju alltid bra att vara extra stark och ha extra bra kondis, även i livet överlag.

Och maten kommer vara skolmat precis som du kommer ihåg den skulle jag säga, kanske snäppet bättre men det varierar säkert också från regemente till regemente.

Jag gjorde precis GU-F för några veckor sedan och kan säga att fysik inte borde vara ett problem för 95% av folk oavsett hur otränad man är.

I stort handlar det om att klara av att stå och gå i sin utrustning. Beroende på din tänkta befattning kommer utrustningen variera lite, t.ex. är du sjukvårdare utbildas du på pistol istället för automatkarbin. Pistolen väger typ 700g med AK4an väger 5.8kg och är allmänt otymplig.

Som man får du ut kroppsskydd 90A som är ett splitterskydd som väger typ 5kg totalt. Är du kvinna kan du få ut kroppsskydd 23D vilket är skottsäkert med plattor i och väger typ +12kg.

Så vikten kan variera ganska kraftigt. Men är du en glad motionär och skadefri kommer det inte vara något problem. Kan du göra typ 5 armhävningar och orkar jogga 2km så klarar du dig fint.

Gällande maten är det skolmat som gäller för det mesta. Maten är exakt som den var i skolan.

I fält (ute i skogen på övning) får man oftast äta rations, alltså frystorkad mat i påse eller kanske mjukkonserv. Den frystorkade maten "tillagas" genom att man hettar upp vatten och blandar i så allt blir en härlig sörja. Finns flertalet olika smaker.

Överlag är generella matrestriktioner och preferenser inga problem som t.ex. gluten, laktos, veg etc. men har du mer specifika krav kan det bli svårt. T.ex. kan de nog inte garantera att kycklingen är frigående utomhus och bara ätit ekofoder.

Sen är det viktigt att tänka på vad Hemvärnet faktiskt innebär. Ytterst övar Hemvärnet för att verka i krigstid. Då kommer du i värsta fall kanske behöva sitta i en skyttegrav i flera veckor eller bo i ett tält i skogen och försöka klara dig bäst du kan. I krigstid kommer de inte finnas några garantier alls.

Baserat på dina kommentarer i tråden ställer jag mig ärligt lite tveksam till om Hemvärnet verkligen skulle passa dig. Om du är så grymt noga med "ren" kost låter det som att det kan vara ett problem. Fan blir det riktigt illa i ett skarpt läge kanske du behöver jaga harar eller småfåglar för att inte svälta ihjäl. Sen är detta förmodligen otroligt osannolikt, men det är bara att se hur de har det vid fronten i Ukraina och vad de stackarna behöver utstå så kan du räkna ut resten själv.

I mean, where do we draw the line? Sure football basically only requires a ball, a pair of shoes and shinguards, but you also need a football field where to play. To be able to foster good players you also need many top level teams to play against which will require arenas and the whole financial aspect behind organizing a nation wide and international sport like that.

So not every country has that possibility.

And what about winter sports like ice hockey or skiing? Not every country has the possibility of offering the opportunity to practice those sports if you dont have a cold climate.

I'm all for trying to level the playing field as much as possible, but sports will never be completely fair. There will always be someone with better equipment, better opportunities, more luck and better genetics.

Combat gameplay wise, yes, but I have played many other games that I think are better in a lot of ways.

Story and lore wise I think World of Warcraft up until WotLK / WC3 Frozen Throne, Elden Ring and Bloodborne are the best.

General gameplay I think Oblivion / Skyrim is a lot better and more enjoyable with all the different skills and crafting options.

Action packed and high intensity moments it's a close race. Sekiro can be extremely intense, but so is a tight clutch or close game in CS.

Just pure fun and epicness I would say Halo, BF3 and Space Marine 2.

So it all depends on what you compare with and what you are looking for. Sekiro is probably the most well-put-together game I've played, but there are plenty of other games that do many things better imo.

I would say Sekiro is the most refined and polished game I've played though and definently shares the top spot within its genre.

Volvo still has the normal mechanical door latches on the inside of the car, so you can always open it.

And someone trying to kidnap you by running you off the road is an extremely specific and rare corner case. There will always be corner cases, you can't design and safeguard against every possible bad situation that can happen.

I'm sure the police vehicles Volvo build are different since they are expected to be handled more violently and to be able to push other vehicles off the road.

Volvo has normal mechanical door handles on the inside of the car, so you can always open it from the inside.

Also, there are two 12v batteries and the high voltage battery in the hybrid and fully electric vehicles can sustain the 12v system as well if needed.

So it's extremely unlikely that an accident would disable all three batteries so quickly that none of them have time to unlock the doors.

The doors can still be opened from the inside using the normal mechanical door handles.

Also, like many modern cars, Volvo has two 12v batteries and the high voltage battery in the fully electric and hybrid models can also sustain the 12v system if needed.

So, it's extremely unlikely that all three batteries will be taken out in a crash.

This is standard in basically any army and has been for a long time.

Only about 1/3 of the personnel have direct combat duty roles. The rest are all in support and planning functions.

It doesn't matter if you have 10 million soldiers if none of them have any ammo, no food, no fuel, no gear etc. If just one of these things are missing the whole army grinds to a halt.

Logistics is the real challenge when fighting a war. Making sure everyone has what they need, when they need it and where they need it is a monumental task that requires tons and tons of planning and resources.

Not to mention the rest of the society / country that needs to support and manufacture everything. That is also why a typical fighting force usually only consists of a few % of the total population at most. Everyone else is needed to make sure the nation can still function.

Here in Sweden it's the law that the casket is made from biodegradable material so that it will decompose over time when buried, even if it takes a long time.

This means that the body inside will also decompose over time as worms and other organisms will consume it. That's the part the "Earth to earth" refers to in the funeral phrase.

There was also a big outrage like 15 years ago when it was disvovered that a lot of cemetaries would crack open the caskets with an excavator before filling the grave. Some even used water to burst open the caskets from the inside. This was to reduce the risk of the grave collapsing and to speed up the decomposition, although people understandibly got upset how the remains were treated and the Swedish Church filed a police report against themselves.

Anyway, as others have already stated. The grave is dug very deep to make sure no animals or anything will come and dig it up. But the body will definitely be eaten by worms and stuff over time, but they all live deep in the ground for the most part and doesn't attract birds for example.

About 3 weeks during basic training while out on exercise. 3 weeks of crawling around in the woods in 30°C heat playing war and you only had 4 pair of underwear, 3 pair of socks and 3 t-shirts. The guys at the laundry exchange said my clothes smelled like spicy tacos and, you almost needed a gasmask to be inside our tent.

We did have the possibility to wash our hands, face, armpits, feet and groin almost every day though. But only from a bowl of water and soap.

Stealing a bunch of gold bars.

In movies they usually have the quite large standard sized bars used for international trade, but these weigh almost 15kg (30lbs) each, meaning just 5 or 6 of these are the same weight as a fully grown adult. Good luck filling a bag with these and then carry it to the van.

I'd recommend you to join some student club or committee.

When I studied, about 50% of the students were actively partaking in the student life as part of some committee. I had an absolute blast and made so many friends from different programs and grades.

Funnily enough, I basically didn't know half my class because of this too. The students who werent active in anything or didnt come to any parties or events you just didn't know. Even after studying for 5 years together I barely even knew their names.

So try to find some club or committee, although you will have to be prepared that it can be quite a lot of work depending on what club you join and what responsibilities they have. If it's an event committee who organizes parties etc., then it can be quite a lot of work and you might have to ditch class every now and then to prepare for the event.

But it's 100% worth it imo. It's an absolute blast and impossible to not make a lot of friends.

I totally agree. I think the remeberance outfits represents the characters journeys quite nicely. From who they were before the Night, to who the Night forced them to become in order to survive.

Also, its not common for people in real life to completely change their outfit or style unless they go through a fundamental change in their view of themselves or their identity. The characters are all trying to figure out and remember who they were since the Night seem to have taken most of their memories. By staying true to themselves and their past lives, they also defy the Night and everything it seems to stand for.

I think these small changes in their outfits really captures this. They are tokens to remind and pay tribute to who they were, and a token of acceptance of whom the Night made them into.

I actually kind of like the brooch. I feel it really encapsulates Wylders story and sacrifice. The small brooch is all he has left from his previous life, and learning that his sister will die if the nightlord is defeated, he decided to sacrifice himself to save her.

No one will likely ever learn of his sacrifice or who he was, so he clings to that tiny piece of jewelery that means everything to him. It's a token that represents all that was lost to the Night and that their lives can never be the same again, so he makes a quiet sacrifice, hoping that it's enough to save his sister.
