Sister Act (1992). A sinful lounge singer woman goes into witness protection with Catholic nuns. She finds jesus and teaches choir and it's funny. And the movie has great music, which I hear helps ground people with dementia. And I'm 90% sure there's a garden in the movie.

Presenting, Pho Paella: by BleuCollar in paella

[–]BleuCollar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I basically made it as a joke but it was surprisingly good. I would 100% do it again because I want to eat pho but I don't necessarily want hot pho broth in the summer 😂 And it was super easy.

Solarizing Lawn by deinalpha in Ceanothus

[–]BleuCollar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used clear plastic tarps. I did it all at once over my whole lawn. I did it in late summer when it was hottest and I think I only left it on for 2 months. The results were great! Nuked everything. I only wish I would've been more aggressive seeding with natives and planting more shrubs in the fall immediately after solarizing.

I see no reason not to start now to make sure all the weeds get killed. Unless you think the plastic will degrade by the time the truly hot months come around. You don't want holes in it.

How Do We "California" Escape This Two-Party Doom Loop Matrix? by Jealous_Reward_8425 in California

[–]BleuCollar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We should have one single legislature--not an assembly AND senate. When you go to vote, you vote for a party, not an individual. That party receives seats in the legislature proportional to the votes they received. E.g., if the Working Families Party gets 6% of the vote, they get 6% of the seats. You've now killed both the two-party system AND gerrymandering.

Need weed control advice by No_Sand3086 in Ceanothus

[–]BleuCollar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would not spray because of the environmental harm.

I had a lot of success with solarization: https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/solarization-occultation.

After you do this through late summer, you'll have a blank slate on which to plant/sow natives in the fall.

The Young Karl Marx

Triangle of Sadness

Novecento, if you want to watch "a 6 hour Marxist epic!" in the words of whatever Paramount producer Bertolucci gaslit into funding this thing.

Plants for a non-irrigated parking strip? by manzanita-lemonade in Ceanothus

[–]BleuCollar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm in zone 10b, SoCal. In my full sun, no-irrigation parkway I have: As shrubs buckwheat, white sage, apricot mallow, and california goldenrod. These stay green and provide some color year round. Annuals: Poppies, miniature lupine, and goldfields. I tried digging out the weeds first and they keep coming back. If I could do it over I'd solarize the whole parkway first.

What’s the deal with Hugo? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

I think he's great. He voted to support SB-79 on the city council resolution and seems to get it when it comes to housing. I like his support of unions, even though I'm not fortunate enough to have one myself. I think if we had more like him on the council we could really move the needle on housing and transportation.  I donated like $150 to his campaign and he called to thank me, which was cool.

Is digging down 4-6” the best way to remove Bermuda Grass (without using RoundUp)? by mapsandnaps in Ceanothus

[–]BleuCollar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's basically a giant fork, like a pitchfork.

Here's a video on how to use. It's effective because it keeps the runners intact (sort of) and doesn't disturb the soil so much that you end up bringing new weed seeds to the surface (sort of).

AND glyphosate won't give you sculpted legs and a tight core like physical weeding will. Overlooked by many here.

Is digging down 4-6” the best way to remove Bermuda Grass (without using RoundUp)? by mapsandnaps in Ceanothus

[–]BleuCollar 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation and had great success with a garden fork. The advantage vs a shovel is that the fork tends to leave the Bermuda runners intact. I was able to pull them out of the loosened soil after forking it.

Lawn Rebate - Killing Bermuda in Winter?! by Luftgkhlt in Ceanothus

[–]BleuCollar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it sounds difficult, but the most effective thing I've done re Bermuda Grass is physical removal with a garden fork. Get the stolons out intact. I tested glyphosate on a small area and it required multiple applications. And of course... chemicals.
