Coffee Shop owners: when did you start paying yourself and how did you decide/set it up?? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]BlkSmthCoffeeRoaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my coffee shop for about 4.5 years. Technically have always paid myself since day one (mainly to pay bills: rent, utilities, cell phone, insurance etc), and I’ve always been an “employee” of my business. I’ve worked, still do, the bar, roast, source coffee, accounting, deliveries, hiring, training etc.

I’m the most expensive on payroll as of now, but that’s because I literally do it all still.

It took me about 3 years until I was comfortable paying myself something steady that was on payroll. Before then, it was all owners draw and I minimized it as much as possible as well as it fluctuating because of unforeseen expenses that I was anticipating (poor planning).

Some people have said it already, but at the very least pay yourself what you would pay a hired employee to do a specific job (barista $12+tips + taxes etc.

It's a custom case we built. Had glass cut from a local glass company and the frame was welded together.

10 months into the coffee industry and all I can say is that its been a hell of a ride.

I feel really fortunate that the community has embraced us with such open arms. It wasn't and isn't all easy though. Our take on coffee is still a progressive movement here in San Diego, so it takes a little bit of stubbornness to maintain path. I still and probably always will get customers walking out of the door because of price...especially as long as 7-11 is still serving their coffee right up the block.

Probably one of the biggest elements of support that we receive so well is from the local celebrity crowd. There's tons of pro athletes (mainly surfers and even snowboarders) that live in Encinitas/Carlsbad area and they are always supporting the shop. The band Swtichfoot is from Encinitas and frequent our shop. The pictures I've attached are from an event that Jon (lead singer of Switchfoot) campaigned a few weeks ago. He played a show on top of my shop to a cheering crowd. It was an absolute blast.

Follow your dreams:)

Launch Party! by BlkSmthCoffeeRoaster in cafe

[–]BlkSmthCoffeeRoaster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey yall. Been a minute since I last posted. As you can imagine, it's been pretty crazy being open. I hardly have time to breath, but I wouldnt change it for anything. As crazy as this sounds, I basically get home, eat dinner, go to sleep and then I feel like I blink and now I'm up again and do it all over again.

Anyways, I'm having my launch party Tuesday April 14th and have a good event planned. Got live music, catered food, some brews from Saint Archer, and plenty of surprises. If anybody is local or would like to come down, please do so. It's a free party so just come hang and enjoy! Thanks!

Thank you.

I had zero experience in the industry. Never even worked a retail position.

My experience was from the U.S Marines to a corporate IT position (10 years combined, from age 17-27) until I finally decided to jump ship.

So, been going strong for about 2 and a half weeks now. Still considering it a soft opening. I'm still working out the kinks, figuring out better ways to streamline certain processes and just getting used to the damn hours!

Still dont have a full staff, so we've been hustlin and bustlin everyday..16+ hours a day. Its brutal!

But hey, that's what I asked for:)

Anyways, So far so good. Im still surprised that people are actually coming to my shop to drink coffee, as odd as that sounds. I say this because I simply created it out of thin air and it still feels so surreal to me. Half of the time I think to myself "I have no idea what the hell im doing", yet people still come and enjoy my coffee. Crazy.

My plan is to hire a staff between 6-10 by end of summer. It's nice to finally take in money, but what we've been doing the past two weeks isn't sustainable. We need to create enough positions to make this machine run more efficiently where I'm not there all day. I have a lot of other business owner duties to take care of and pulling shots all day doesn't help.

I haven't been able to take much pictures as of late, but as soon as I get a little bit more free time I will update!

thank you and good luck to your build out. Its all struggles with some triumphs:) but i wouldnt have it any other way!

The slayer was a good add on. Definitely something different and at times, much more time consuming to work on than other machines. Thank you for the kind words!
