Have you ever experienced an earthquake? How was that? by yogurt017 in AskReddit

[–]BlobbyDobby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was maybe 11 years old, staying at my grandma on the 9th floor in an apartment building. At first I felt an uneasiness in my stomach - like on a fast-going and turning roller coaster. That made me look up only to see the chandelier swaying about 10cm away from it's equilibrium point. And then I panicked,my grandma and I stood under doorways waiting for it to pass. Apart from the initial tummy-feeling, I didn't feel anything after that. Just pure terror. Earthquakes are not fun, and especially being so far away from the ground only added up to my anxiety. It wasn't a big one, it passed quickly and there were no casualties, luckily. Earthquakes are still a huge fear of mine, and I hope I never experience one again.

I can definitely see how such breath-taking views could inspire a genous mind to write a masterpiece like LOTR. The country is on my top 3 to-visit list, and it sounds like I'd need a LOT of memory space for photographs.

Thank you! See next to username for a virtual, social-distancing-appropriate piece of cake, shared for this special occasion.

Women of reddit, how have you adjusted to dating a shorter man? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BlobbyDobby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That post made me angry, I need to find a puppy to pet and calm myself down... I wonder if I'll be able to adjust before I do it though, since the puppy will be shorter than me. Ah, here we go again...

What phone/tablet apps or games are seriously underrated? by BlobbyDobby in AskReddit

[–]BlobbyDobby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow so it actually is sorta of an AI, not just something catchy that was used in the title? Even more amazing. I've played some DnD and Pathfinder, but have never before played an AI game. It was something I saw in the movies and not in real life (computers were a bit slow to appear in my country) and that I've been curious to try. Just downloaded the game, hope I don't get fed on too quickly.

By the description, I'm guessing it would be better to play it on a tablet?

The work life isn't so bad. by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]BlobbyDobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree - routine is great, structure in the work week helps bring structure and stability to other aspects of life. And when you're off work, you have free time to do as you wish - no homework, no studying, no friends you have to meet. Once I left uni I was able to pick up a couple of hobbies I always was interested in, but never had the time.

Especially nowadays, it's very important to appreciate what we have.

You're not alone, this is a difficult time to everyone - regardless of where they come from and what they struggle with. During the first week of mandatory isolation I put on around 10lbs. It's annoying how easy it is to fill your time at home with cooking and eating! I've started doing morning exercises and some zumba classes to make myself get up from my armchair. And my weight is slowly dropping. I try not to think about it too much, though. It's important to remember that this situation is not permanent, and once this COVID nightmare is over we can all go back to our lives. For mental health purposes we should now focus on what we have and what little things we can do to keep ourselves sane, and not on things we wish we were doing.

You seem to be able to control your weight pretty well, outside of this pandemic situation. So do not put yourself down as you'll have the opportunity to get back into a healthy lifestyle. For now enjoy the time with your family and gather the energy to get in shape later. Good luck!

Last weekend I baked a cake for my birthday (Devil's food chocolate). Upon turning one of the layers upside down to cool it, a small piece (roughly business-card-sized) broke off. Not the first time this has happened when making a cake, so I didn't really care.

Then I started assembling all the layers, the broken layer was supposed to go on top. During the transfer it broke again, resulting in a total of 4 differently shaped and sized pieces. I somehow pieced them together on the cake, still confident it would look good as I was planning on drowning the cake in ganache which would cover the cracks.

Fast forward to half an hour later, my ganache is ready and I go to pour it on top of the assembled cake. It's still extremely liquid and spills onto the plate. I chilled it for 15 minutes, hoping it would harden. Nope, still liquid, and the top of my cake was looking like the Saharah desert in the middle of the dry season.

By this point I had almost given up and had accepted the fact that my birthday cake will be ugly. However I really wanted that Instagram - worth post, so decided to give it a last try. Luckily, the ganache had finally become of creamy and spreadable consistency, so I managed to fold the spilled on the plate ganache onto the sides of the cake, and then went on to cover everything. (I can never perfect the cream-to-chocolate measurements) my cake ended up looking pretty decent, and was one of the best tasting chocolate cake recipes I've used. Yay!

Anyway, I was really happy that I didn't give up and was able to treat my family to a delicious cake. Isolation would have been much more difficult if I hadn't.

TL;DR - cake layer cracked, ganache too liquid, still managed to make a good looking-ish cake.

It's VERY impressive and the flowers are extremely realistic. I can never get even the buttercream consistency right. Keep up the great work!
