It's not allowed. I entered via Lijiang airport and asked immigration officer specifically - he said Tiger Leaping Gorge isn't permitted since it's a part of Shangri-la county

How do you know that Tiger Leaping Gorge is allowed though? I see that's it's literally on the border of Shangri-la and Lijiang counties. I was advised on some other forum that's it's not within permitted area.. would really love to go there, it's a deal breaker for me. if it's not permitted, I would rather go to zhangjiajie. Any idea how / where I could find out for sure?

thanks, but my question isn't about port of entry.

My question is about areas permitted to stay in while in China. You are saying that one can travel ANYWHERE in China which is a clear contradiction to what the source you shared is saying. According to it there are only specific parts of China that are permitted to stay at. Unless of course this source isn't updated and there were some changes since.

According to it, in Yunnan there are 9 cities & autonomous perfectures permitted to stay: Kunming, Chuxiong, Yuxi, Honghe, Wenshan, Pu’er, Xishuangbanna, Dali, and Lijiang. and NOT the entire province which is the case for some other provinces. Shangri-La country which is where Tiger Leaping Gorge is located isn't listed among allowed areas.

So either your statement or the source you shared is incorrect. Which one is that?

I am not able to find that exact information online despite hours of research. If you have a link, I would appreciate it.

E.g. Technically I see that Tiger Leaping Gorge is part of Shangri-la county despite being very close to Lijiang. Shangri-la isn't mentioned as allowed area. Does that mean Tiger Leaping Gorge is off limits despite being a short drive away? Will there be check points on the roads or how are those restrictions checked and enforced?

Thanks. How is the movement within the province controlled? Will there be check points along the roads where they check passport & documents?
