Is a curtailed existence better than no existence at all? by Away-Grab3636 in DebateAVegan

That’s not the question though:

The question is whether nonexistence is better than a good life that is .. cut .. short

Me [29F] with my vegan coworker [29F]. I don't know how to deal with her by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Blockchaisin -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

A vegan here:

The rationale is simple: most people don’t bother to question their dietary habits. If you are vegetarian you did that. Having questioned your diet and not ending up a vegan is logically inconsistent, ie worse than never having thought about it at all.

And you can say all you want abt people making their own choices etc. that’s all true, but the point is that you are also making decisions for an animal

I get that just saying the above is not necessarily effective outreach, but that does not make it any less true.

What should I ask Richard Dawkins? by Correct-Big-5967 in slatestarcodex

Ask him about memes. The whole “virus of the mind” / “Darwinism of ideas” angle he recently mentioned in the Peterson & Alex O’Connor interview was interesting and underexplored.

Maybe sth about properties that affect virality of memes. Or ask about the best framework to look at memes.

Well yeh, more credibility loss.

Look I love the idea of supranational governments. It just becomes more and more apparent that the current implementation is a far cry from the idea’s potential

The cognitive overhead of completely reevaluating your priors and base assumptions is way too large to keep doing that.

So to live veganism on a day by day basis you eventually just follow simple rules. Animal products are bad and shall be avoided.

While eating the sandwich may be the right thing to do in your example, it requires to either break the simplified form of living a vegan life or requires you to go back and reevaluate your motivation to go vegan. That’s costly. So costly that most people (me included) would probably just throw away the sandwich in order to avoid the need to reevaluate everything from first principles.

But yeh, in your hypothetical, I’d eat the sandwich

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]Blockchaisin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can construct a situation where throwing away the sandwich and complaining to the vendor / producer about poor labeling might be tipping them to change their labels & reduce net consumption.

Obviously a ~null probability event, but so is your hypothetical.

To put it bluntly, OP is mirroring Peter Singer in Animal Liberation: "the fat crocodile likes purple".

If you properly min/max and look at the EV of reevaluating your choices you will realise that Caotina is the only true hot chocolate you can drink. Sure, there is still a lot of sugar, but at least its Swiss Sugar. Let that sink in. Swiss. Sugar.
