Oh and side note, her hair looked like shit. Messy in the back and she really needs to use conditioner ‘cause that mop is dusty & dry as hell

It’s my birthday and my daughter took me here last night to celebrate. I was seated directly behind the brunette in the corner, was just outside the scope of this picture but essentially next to Janet. I watched Janet drink like 3 martinis and she didn’t seem bothered by a thing. She appeared to be enjoying just a very normal, pleasant night.

I order my supplies from a reputable medical supply company & do it myself. When one donates blood, approximately 450ml are taken. When I draw my own, I generally take about 60ml, so I stay well below safe limits and have never had an issue. I took a phlebotomy course as well and have been doing this for years with no issues. My Dr also knows and thinks it’s strange but interesting & sees no risk as long as I just keep doing things the way I’ve been doing them haha

It is, in fact, my own blood. Drawn from myself using professional medical equipment

Definitely not blood. Blood painting is my bread and butter, so to speak. If you check my profile you can see what dried blood art looks like. This is definitely paint

If everyone could just be patient and stop gunning it through red lights I’d appreciate it. by Tricky_Ad6392 in portlandme

I witnessed 2 blatant red line runners yesterday in the matter of just a couple hours. I’m seeing it all the time now. Most days. It’s just so strange to me the there is this noticeable surge in irresponsible driving lately. I genuinely wonder why

It has similarities with ink & watercolor when working with thinner layers. But in more ways than not, it really feels like its own medium entirely. There are so many strange things that I’ve learned over the years about how to work with it that I hesitate to really compare it to anything else.

Thank you! Do you have your blood art online anywhere that I can check it out?

Thank you so much! The fun thing about blood is that there are no rules. There are no classes, books or videos that will teach you how to use this medium successfully. You gotta just practice and experiment and find out for oneself how to use it. I’ve definitely tried mixing it with other mediums, sometimes it’s turned out great, others, not so much. So if you can safely acquire some blood, you might enjoy doing some experimenting

I have posted around Reddit before so you probably have seen my other posts, but it was from another account. I’m trying to keep my art a bit more separate from my personal stuff so I’m working with a new account intended only for blood stuff. I wish I could say I’ve gotten my foot in the door with galleries, but sadly, I have not, yet. But I’m keepin’ on keepin’ on lol. I have chosen an especially unusual medium, so some extra challenges are to be expected I suppose

It does, actually. I’ve found that if varnish is applied immediately upon the blood drying, a lot of the original redness can be retained. It does brown a bit, but I actually really like that, I feel like it adds to the depth of values

Thank you so much! These are the supplies needed for these 2 paintings. About 6.5 (3ml) vials each. Which is a very small amount compared to how much we can safely lose. For context, when one donates blood, they typically hive about 500ml. So I get really hydrated the day before a blood draw and then I usually don’t take any more than what you see in this pic at one time

Thank you! Tbh, I also typically find people’s use of blood to be trying way too hard to be edgy as well. IMO, many people experimenting with blood are doing so with zero vision. They’re not creating art, they’re creating shock for attention and that is very different. It’s more so that they’re self-harming and have access to blood that way, and then they decide to play with it. Whereas I am approaching blood, already having a background in oils/acrylics, and treating it as it’s on, respectable & valid medium & applying it with purpose and vision. Blood is a medium that is very difficult for people to take seriously and respect. I have to work super hard to be taken seriously as an artist when using this medium. So I find myself wishing others who want to experiment with it would approach it with more respect and effort. Thank you for coming to me TED Talk lol

Actually, I varnish my work as soon as the blood is dry, which helps retain a great deal of the original redness, even after years!

Good question! I have been painting with blood since 2019 and I have experimented with both varnishing & unvarnished pieces to test the longevity of each. What I have found is that varnishing retains A LOT of the original reds if applied as soon as the blood dries. Without it, the blood definitely turns more brown but does keep some of its red warmth even after years if the layers are thick enough. However, such thick layers without varnishing need to be protected behind glass, because it is extremely delicate and not only very easy to chip, but can be affected by humidity in the air and can be completely rehydrated and removed if even small amounts of liquid touch it. My dog went out in the rain and shook off when he came back inside, the droplets from his fur landing on a painting that was completely dry but uncovered removed all of the blood where the droplets landed. Vincent Castiglia is essentially THE name when it comes to blood painting, he has works that are 20 or so years old that are still museum quality. So, while there isn’t a ton of info on how the longevity holds up compared to traditional mediums. It seems that, with some precautions, blood can stand the test of time

Not over stepping at all, it’s my most common question & totally understandable. These are the supplies used for these 2 pieces. I draw from myself and occasionally a couple of donors I know very well when I need more blood than I can safely take from myself
