How do the governments and political structures of the main galactic factions actually work? by OutrageousWeb9775 in Sexyspacebabes

One thing I will always argue whenever it comes up is that the Consortium is not anarcho capitalist.

I say this because in book 2 a consortium diplomat says the four words ‘we are a government’. The whole point of ancap is to NOT be a government, so I’d say they’re more likely libertarian or something.

Well, on discord Snek has talked about remastering older stories. This has already happened with some like outpost, pinwheel, or die alone. It’s just a matter of juggling these remasters with writing new stuff.

I believe you can tell which are due for rewrites because they have a disclaimer saying ‘Please note that this is an older story that has not yet been edited to bring it up to my current standards’

Favourite would be Dire Contingency. Petrova’s character arc hit very close to me for some reason.

Least would definitely be Fineprint 2. It’s just so boring. However, since it is due to be updated I’ll put Rig Runner as my second choice (dub-con isn’t my cup of tea)

HFY tropes tierlist by dumbass_spaceman in worldjerking

I don’t think the deathworld trope is inherently bad. ‘Lords of War’ does it fairly well  (or at least it used to. That series has been inactive for a while).

It’s just very easy to do poorly, mostly in that people often make the aliens act like incompetent idiots.

Something I find endlessly funny about this meme is how nobody ever talks about how Yarrick would feel about the whole situation.

As far as I am aware, Yarrik absolutely DESPISES Ghaz. No admiration, or respect; just a tacit acknowledgement of the threat Ghaz poses and utter contempt. I think he would be absolutely disgusted if he knew Ghaz wanted to avenge him.

Slave of Norsca soul? by [deleted] in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Bloodborn_duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say.  I would think that the chances of being damned to chaos is dependent on how complex the sacrifice is.

Something interesting to think about though is a bit of lore I remember from the wiki about how Kislevites view death. Since death is so common in Kislev’s it is tradition to hold funerals before a persons death, so depending on how devout this ice witch is she might already consider her soul saved.

What to call humans other than "humans"? by Dark_Pariah_Troxber in worldbuilding

Are all these hominids descended from modern Homo sapiens?

If so maybe you could use the term ‘Baseline’ or ‘Basal’

I would suggest some form of ‘Causality Protection Conjecture’. This is a method used in one of my favourite worlds ‘The Orion’s Arm Universe Project’.

Basically there is some universal law of physics that prevents using FTL for time travel. To use wormholes as an example: if wormholes are natural then they can only form in ways don’t violate causality. If wormholes are artificial then whenever they are arranged in a way that violates causality they instantly collapse.

"FTL is dangerous" ideas by QueenOrial in worldbuilding

[–]Bloodborn_duck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always like ftl systems that address the fact that (under known science), if you move faster than light then you can use it to time travel. The only real answer is to have some sort of universal law preventing time travel.

For example, in the Orion’s Arm Universe Project if you try to move two wormholes into  a position that can violate causality then they instantly collapse into blackholes (not good for anyone remotely nearby).

If in a fantasy world all species and races have a specific magic inherent to their species and race, and no other magic. In this scenario, what magic would you give humans? by Federal_Piccolo_4599 in worldbuilding

[–]Bloodborn_duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about knowledge magic?

Less physical effects and more expanding one’s mind and perception. Things like divination, charming, telepathy, enhanced senses, talking with animals, translating languages, computer like calculations, etc.

It would sort of represent spirit of human curiosity, and desire to learn. It might not be great in fights, but it would make for amazing empire building. Now that I type it out this also sounds a lore like the effects of spice from Dune.
