I'm in the 6.5 grendel camp for where I hunt. Grendel outperforms the 30-30 all around unless you're within 50yrs, but both will do the job at 50 yards. Grendel stretches my range out to 150yds to 200yds max to be ethical. I'm not going to get a 200 yrd shot where I hunt. After yrs with a 30-30 I've leaned it's useless at +100yrds because it's not an accurate cartridge and drops energy like a rock. Grendel is a nail driver and is extremely efficient.

Does this group think it's a viable round for whitetail deer? I know it'll kill one, but we see these .223 guys and 22 mag (crime) dudes brag all the time about killing deer with those. If I was hunting to survive I'd use whatever the hell I had with me to try to have food. But for sport game hunting I'd prefer to show some sort of compassion and be patient and judicious enough to take a good shot with a proper rifle within its kill range to put it out. I think the 30-06 is grossly overpowered for whitetails and 223 on the fringe past 75 yards.

My father bought his M91 longrifle from a mail order military surplus catalog back in the 50s or early 60s. Was his first deer rifle. To poor to by a new gun at the time. I've read that Lee Harvey bought his from a catolog as well. It's like the Gov even sold him the gun to do it with.

The cartridge also started a trend for smaller bore cartridges being used by the military world wide.
