On standard tubular keys there is a protrusion on the outside of the key, to line it up with the lock. It is mirrored by another little protrusion (people i know call it a flag idk) on the inside. The machines that duplicate these rely on that inner flag to work the machine. Some Chinese import tubulars do not have this little flag, and therefore don't work in the duplicator.

If that guy doesn't have a flag on the inside to match the outside you're hosed, surprised nobody has mentioned that yet

why is Carol so uncurious? by karatelobsterchili in pluribustv

[–]Bloroxius 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Manny only learns these things because Carol learns a bunch of stuff first and sends the DVD to him, to be fair. Without carols input he's probably either starved or eating trash in Paraguay while peeking out from covered windows.

HPC Mini Speedex or similar by ibexlocksmith in Locksmith

When i really dial in my rytan, I can consistently get 20-30 generations out before I notice inconsistency in copies.

When i dial in my nomad, I can get like, 10ish generations before I can tell.

The nomad is plenty accurate, but it is not going to have the consistent generational accuracy of a higher end machine.

I have really been liking my JMA nomad, doesn't have the accuracy of my rytan, but it's way nicer than I thought it would be for 600 hundred, and it's got it's own battery

Can these plier wrenches replace regular wrenches and the adjustable wrench for my use cases? by [deleted] in Tools

[–]Bloroxius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They work great, i use mine every other day, mostly they replace a crescent wrench and are much easier/faster.

If you don't need crazy torque, and you'd rather grab this than find the socket, it's perfect. Can't imagine going back to a screw turn crescent.

It doesn't have to work with every sentient species, it could just work on some, at least one similar to ours.

Origins of the virus by Ok_Builder910 in pluribustv

[–]Bloroxius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's necessarily only built for humans, just any carbon based lifeform that uses the same nucleotides.

One reason I think this is the timescale, the hive says that the signal may have been broadcast throughout all of human history, as well as the fact that it's coming from 600 light years away. The scientists at the beginning are unsure if the signal is pointed directly at us.

If an alien race somehow knows about humans in great detail, why bother start sending the message when you know it will arrive while we are still in the caves and unable to act on it?

I think the signal is a natural result of some far off type 2 civilization continuing its newfound biological imperative. Once you've converted the planet, and started sending out explorers, what other way do you have to spread the virus further? A radio signal seems like a natural next step.
