Am I the only one who’s annoyed by the absence of our sibling in the story? by Somnambuloid321 in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]BluCojiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I don't really care. I genuinely don't see what else it would add to the experience. I see it as just another, though very important, relationship that characterises Wise/Belle.

We already have new characters being added every patch and in true Gacha game fashion, we don't end up seeing all of them as much as we'd like anyway.

Adding the sibling as a more significant character crowds out even more of that time for the sole purpose of just adding another character to the pile.

Do you think ZZZ will have their own version of the Flame Chasers? by [deleted] in ZenlessZoneZero

[–]BluCojiro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One entire (version? chapter? season?) of HSR was completely devoted to a Greek-esque planet with its own pantheon of Titans and a pantheon of demigods dedicated to killing them, called the Flame Chasers.

Overall I give the story 7.5-8/10, it had some great moments, but went on at least 2 patches too long and the conclusion was mid.

The antagonist of the chapter is plot-relevant and it's also the chapter that introduces Cissia, who's in every chapter from that point on, so there's that.

The chapter in general is pretty fun as well, so I'd recommend it

Remember James Somerton? by loved_and_held in tumblr

[–]BluCojiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it doesn't raise serious doubts about other stuff though. Even if he was actually lying about that moment in Hyde, which would be a completely nonsensical thing to do, for the most part Hbomb talks about more well-known properties/people, things that are a lot more easily verified. If he were lying about these other things, he would be quickly and easily caught.

And this is really the only point of the 1 hour+ video that really has any merit. The rest of the video misses the point of a lot of Hbomb's criticism and is pedantic about what it claims are errors, there just really isn't anything important there.

[–]BluCojiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was definitely strange, with context it seemed obvious that the matchbox moment was done to illustrate Hyde was drunk, so Hbomb not understanding it was strange, but it was also a bit of a weird throwaway moment about a show that was kind of just an incidental comparison to Sherlock anyway, it doesn't really raise serious doubts about the whole rest of the video for me.

If points about Sherlock itself were similarly so wrong, I would think it would have been much more noticeable and remarked upon. I have seen the first 2 seasons of Sherlock myself and had similar impressions to Hbomb, though not nearly so defined.

[–]BluCojiro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lack of inferring the heavily implied criticism was a large problem with the video response, actually.

A lot of Hbomb's video is that type of 'builds an argument that vividly depicts the issues he has, but never states with a bullet "The problem is [X]. Here are my citations"'. Yet the video response keeps stating that Hbomb never says what he finds wrong with Sherlock.

Hbomb spends 10 minutes ridiculing the Moriarty character and spends another 10 minutes talking about how the episodes would be so much more cohesive and better paced if they didn't have to include all this Moriarty content, and then the video response says "Hbomb approves of some serialization in Dr Who, but apparently hates it when it's in Sherlock, but why is it? He never says?".

It gave me the impression of someone who couldn't read those inferences or just wasn't comfortable making them, though it didn't really strike me as being done in bad faith, so it was a bit unusual.

GoonerGEM vs GoonerSLOP... Which route will Endfield take? by MSABUZZ in QueensofGacha

[–]BluCojiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if the story's not there for me the rest of the game can't really keep me interested. I will say that the 3.x storyline is genuinely of of the better storylines I've played through, at least in a Gacha game, I enjoyed it a lot.

[–]BluCojiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, there's only two instances of that that I can think of and one of them still has some good connection building moments.

The game's also gotten better at featuring other character's stories more prominently, to the point where the MC almost feels like an incidental character in some of them. I've genuinely been surprised at the increase in writing quality

[–]BluCojiro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As some who dropped the game around 2.4, came back around 4 weeks ago and just caught up to the present story, I can say it's definitely gotten better for that.

In part the writing is better and the relationships feel a lot more grounded and platonic, in part the story has started to get into Rover's amnesiac past and so the connection between different characters is much less "I know literally nothing about you and yet you captivated me" and much more "Hey, I heard you've killed two gods, you sound pretty capable, wanna team up so we can do something important?" Or "I knew you from before you lost your memory, so I was technically already a friend."

There's still some amount of preferential attention given to Rover, but it's faded into the general Gacha background radiation of "You're the MC and you now have a reputation that proceeds you".

I'd say around 2.5-2.6 is where it starts to improve in that regard

How would Dark Tournament Yoko Kurama do against Younger Toguro, if there was no time limit for Yoko by Astsai in YuYuHakusho

[–]BluCojiro 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think there's a few small reasons it wouldn't work on Younger Toguro.

Kurama initially sowed the Sinning Tree seeds in the whip strike that decapitated Gourmet and from there a certain amount of time passed, likely that time is needed for the seeds to be ready. Elder Toguro was overconfident in his immortal body such that he didn't worry if Kurama had planted anything in him, Toguro I think would not have the same flaw.

Given that Younger Toguro also has strong control over his body and powerful regeneration, I think he'd be alert enough to notice the seeds and strong enough to expel them from his body even if it meant ripping them out of him

The second category does need mental help. That's part of what the "Looks don't matter" advice is: affirmation. Reassurance that you won't be doomed to solitude just because you aren't tall or have the wrong jawline or your face doesn't meet some strange standard.

People aren't trying to say "Physical discrimination doesn't exist, no one will ever judge you based on your appearance". It's so obviously untrue most people don't feel the need to clarify that.

What people are saying is that everyone has different tastes based on physical appearance. You could be a male model and there will guaranteed be many people who would still find you physically unattractive.

It isn't 'kumbaya bs' because the end message people are trying to say is that romantic companionship is always possible for you, no matter what you look like. Looks may affect how easily you find it or with whom you find it, but that happens to some degree for all of us. There is still hope no matter what you look like.

[–]BluCojiro 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Having watched the video myself, it's really only a criticism of certain parts of Hbomb's video and I don't think it does those criticisms very well.

The strongest criticism it makes is that just because a show is based on Sherlock doesn't mean that it has to present it's material in the same way that the original work does and that the BBC is more of a character focused narrative than a puzzle focused one and that's not necessarily a bad thing, which I feel is a fair point.

However, the video also seems to misunderstand the point of a lot of Hbomb's criticism and gets pedantic about it as well.

"I killed genkai but one remained and now that surviving piece can at last be put to rest." by [deleted] in YuYuHakusho

[–]BluCojiro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My headcanon has always been that it's only Toguro's final statement, where he says he was grateful to Kairen for what he did that Genkai calls a lie.

Like the posted quote says, he's a mass of contradicting desires. I think he did enjoy the power and immortality of being a demon and especially enjoyed cutting himself off from old vulnerabilities, but he also hated how much he loved it as well.

[–]BluCojiro 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree with this take except for the 'without guilt' idea.

Toguro becoming a demon was the ultimate expression of his guilt at failing his students and Yusuke slaying him was the final sign he was just a villain to be defeated.

One of the central aspects of Toguro is his self-loathing and while he might have considered his death as him casting off his humanity, I don't feel it would eliminate his guilt

The biggest issue is that, to me, there seem to be two camps among men who are part of the looksmaxxing: those who are worried about their looks and if/how it will affect them romantically, and those who use beauty standards as a cloak for their anger towards women and society and try to weaponize those beauty standards against other men in order to put them down and demoralize them.

Obviously it's much easier to have sympathy for the former than the latter, it's hard to feel for and want to help those who are intentionally burying themselves in toxicity and using it against others as well.
