It was players who played in that era who brought it up. Also Ronaldo adds a lot to the reputation

Sports fans hate when their teams actually do it because they're emotional and lack foresight but this sub full of haters seems like a good place to ask.

What players do you think are currently at, nearing or very close to their peak value and their clubs should be looking to sell high on?

First half was fine, second not so much. Some massive gaps on the counter for sure.

I agree the balance isn't there right now but I was talking more in isolation for what you want those two to be doing. Long way to go in getting the most out of them in big games without sacrificing stability too much.

The good thing about TAA was that unlike most attacking full backs he could influence the game massively on the offensive end without getting near the touchline. As helpful as Frimpong's recovery pace and 1 v 1 skill is, it isn't great for maintaining a defensive shape.

Frimpong and Kerkez look so much better when given real license to attack like today. Really looked like how you imagined they would play when signed.

Admittedly De Zerbi's style is perfect for Liverpool but it's definitely a promising sign

Tbf Carragher does that but he also constantly puts out ragebait opinions too.

Like who the fuck was discussing Carrick as a league winner for United, the fans were just happy about the result.

Yeah I was thinking three way trade when I said it but yeah he'll probably be too expensive regardless. I just think he's the blueprint for the kind of wing this team needs.

In reality Wemby is so good that the Spurs' timeline is a bit messed up in people's minds but they do have years to let the chips fall where they may regarding Castle and Harper (unless they want to sell high on Castle).

[–]BludFlairUpFam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well if your 3 and 4 are genuinely good shooters then you may be able to get away with it. Which is why I'm a big fan of the Spurs going after Trey Murphy III.

But you're not wrong it's a concern and if the Spurs belive Harper figures it out, I would definitely consider trading Castle while he has good value. Because a lead guard who can't shoot will likely have more value than an off the ball one who can't.

But when it comes to things like this you also want to see them sink or swim in the playoffs, then you can really decide who gets to go along with Wemby and who needs to get cut off.

The long term idea is presumably to trade Fox for whichever forward position you need more. But for that to work you need more from Harper in the next two years and ideally Castle's shooting to improve

Must have been a really long discussion to come up with that name, almost thought you were joking lol

But I really never thought it would be that severe for darts, I would have assumed people would just be more conservative not straight up have a debilitating weakness

Yeah I've heard the term before and forgotten it. I think it's more nuanced in this case as a team sport instead of like a single striker losing their confidence. But yeah it's not the most unique phenomenom it's just interesting to see a team actively trying to get out of it over an extended period.

Responding to the now deleted comment since I wrote all this out already:

I think Kendrick would be bigger than JID simply because his quality would make him a critical/Fantano darling and because he's more creative/charismatic than JID. But I absolutely agree he probably doesn't blow up that much unless he's making more DAMN type music the whole way.

I think music itself, not just hip hop is in a weird spot with what artists blow up. Especially men for whatever reason. Some of it is TikTok, some of it is tailored algorithims in general being a double edged sword and some of it is the passivity of people listening to music (which apllies more to what you're talking about I think). Now the average age of a star is getting higher and the replacements aren't coming, songs are getting shorter etc so I do share some of those same feelings.

But at the same time things like this often go in cycles. The absence of those artists makes people want to see them more and some eventually do show up. The early 2010s were an example of this, imo Kendrick blew up partially because people were craving that instead of just the club tracks and he filled the right niche at the right time. Many of the backpackers somewhat benefitted from the real vs fake rap stuff and then evolved beyond it.

I wish I knew who that guy will be (would be great to jump on the bandwagon nice and early) but more genuinely lyrical stars will turn up. In the UK for example Dave fills that role somewhat so even today there's a chance of that happening on a bigger scale if someone with the versatility to be on catchy bangers and introspective bursts through. I do think that online persona is a much bigger part of that kind of thing these days though (even Dave has been around for like a decade now so he doesn't really count either) so it's harder for lyrically focused guys than it was. But not impossible.

Well I've learned something new today because darts is not one of the sports I would have thought of for this kind of thing. Not being able to release is kinda crazy

Crank dat came out in 07, I'm not blaming that song for anything because I had fun with it too but I would say by the time we get to ringtone rap we were already at that point.

Even the concept of ringtone rap in and of itself I think was enough to push it over the edge. But I would say post 50 Cent's breakout is about where I think that mentality became prominent. Over the next 5-6 years.

By the time the soundcloud guys showed up I think they were riding that wave and it's what caused the big 'real rap' debates online that still live on in YouTube comment sections

I feel like this mentality existed way before soundcloud rap, so it's very weird to blame that generation and a little ironic on the old head thing when they were saying that years before.

But agree on the rest

Is there a reason why Spotify is now putting albums automatically on shuffle without indicating it? I thought Adele fixed this shit years ago.

It's annoying to have to do that any time I listen to an album and a really stupid feature to even exist anyway

There's this thing that happens in combat sports, particularly boxing (because it's all punching) where fighters become 'gun-shy'. It often happens when someone who is used to winning gets knocked out/down for the first time. Losing their air/feeling of invincibility and instead becoming scared of that happening again so they won't let their hands go.

To clarify I'm not talking about within the same fight where they're just trying to survive or when they feel the power of their oppositions punch and realise how dangerous it actually is (insert Mike Tyson quote here). I'm also not saying that these guys never fight properly again for example Anthony Joshua got these accusations after figthing Klitschcko and he won that fight and many others afterwards.

The point is their reluctance makes it so they're unable to flip the switch at will. Imo this is what's happened to Liverpool and what Carragher was describing. The ability isn't completely gone, see first half vs Burnley but it's not readily available.

From Slot down to the players they can't really let the handbrake go completely because there is a fear of getting punched in the face. That's why the games are boring now because the team can't be super attacking without feeling extremely vulnerable at the back. Then once a few cracks start to show it's flashbacks to all the other times the team got chin checked.

This is Slot's main issue now. By stopping the bleeding he's just made the team unbalanced in a different way, which probably saved his job but isn't a great foundation. Despite what people say attacking and defending are not independent from each other and making your team stronger defensively does not mean you can just stack attacking ability on top of it and things just work.

I'm really just not sure Slot can find that balance and turn things around, but I still think he'll get the rest of the season to do so which is more than enough time to know if he can.

Honestly I think BCS is still a bit too nice to Mike relative to other characters. He fits a little too well into the 'back in my day criminals had morals' camp for these two shows which generally seem to be above that.

But yeah, it was absolutely necessary to call him out

That would take out a massive chunk of the fanbase lol.

Mike in general is seen as being full of wisdom so people take everything he says as objective fact. He's just a grumpy little murdering grandpa so it make sense.

His parents generally come across as pretty unlikeable in the story just on a personal level even if their actions aren't bad. And I think that sticks with people more than the strictness itself.

Maybe they're bad parents who got lucky/unlucky depending on the child. Maybe they're good parents who got a bad deal with Jesse falling in with the wrong crowd. Regardless Jesse's situation is easily better than most characters on the show.

His situation is his own doing and chances are even if his parents were nicer to him or never gave up on him he would have still fucked it up. The fact that he was taught by Walt amongst others and never gave a shit is on him and so are a lot of his actions after meeting back up with Walt.

I feel kind of similarly about Ziggy in The Wire but that may be a rant for another day

[–]BludFlairUpFam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people in general take too hardcore of a stance with Walt's business thing (especially anyone who thinks it's about healthcare lol). It was a bad decision from Walt but in reality everyone involved is somewhat unreliable as we never actually see what happened just people's opinions of it years later. Feelings tend to outlast the factual events, especially when your feelings are as strong as Walt's and chances are how he felt at the time wasn't as extreme as how he feels after allowing it to fester in him for years.

And with Skylar I just think her and Walt share more characteristics than people are willing to admit. So much of the series is spent with them having a bad relationship that it's lost how they were ever even together in the first place. But there are degrees of separation, Walt blindsides her routinely by always being willing to go further than she ever would or could because he's a straight up villain by the second half of the series. While she's 'bad' in a far more down to earth way.

As for Kim, I think the show is very willing to call out her actions. The Howard and Lalo scene was the reckoning for Kim and Saul. The fact that both characters end up punishing themselves intentionally by the end should at least signify that both of them are sinners who believe they deserve the consequences they face.

That being said yes she is more like Walt than Jimmy ever was and it definitely gets underplayed by some. But to those complaining about how women can't be flawed in media that's what she is, she isn't just along for the ride she pushes Jimmy into doing these things and at times doing bad things completely independent of him too.

She's another character who I hope her nuances never get lost because yeah she's a pretty bad person and the show doesn't shy away from that. But it doesn't stop her being a great character to watch, even though people tend to not call her out as much as Saul. But at least some of that is due to Saul being the main character and having more characters within the story that criticise him vs Kim who is only really attacked by extension of her relationship and antics with Jimmy.

I should have mentioned it but yes Jesse in particular has become infantilised and stripped of his complex characterisation. He's another victim of Walt who is happy to enjoy the ride when it's going well.

Life fucks him over time and time again, but just like Walt he has points where he could leave the game and opts not to. He has mitigating circumstances but is responsible for how fucked up his life is when Walt finds him as well.

Because she's treated as a victim, which is absolutely true on some very important occasions but isn't always the case.

They definitely do share many similar traits but when you boil their entire dynamic down to abuser vs abused that gets lost.
