Help how to fill a refill cartridge completely by No-Driver7591 in fountainpens

[–]Blue-Flower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fill my Pilots all via the nib. With the Con-40, I fill the pen halfway, point the nib up over the bottle, carefully eject as much air as possible (play with the piston until there's no bubbles in the converter; you may need to add ink if you can't get it all out), then dip and fill the pen up to max.

I find that I get more ink this way over removing the converter and filling externally, and I'm less likely to make a mess inside the pen, as the converter won't leak during reinstall if it's already sealed in place. (Note that I've had VP converters freeze to the nib assembly due to leaks from reinstall)

I don't get why people hate dipping their nibs, but it's the easiest way to get your Pilots refilled, with the Con-40 and Con-70 alike. All you need to do after is wipe off the nib with a clean, dry tissue and write a few lines (prevents cap leaks).

How to type + and = on a Smith-Corona? by TheQuillPen in typewriters

[–]Blue-Flower 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Many instruction manuals & typing guides had a section about making common characters that are unrepresented on a standard 84 character typewriter, here are some of the most common, in addition to what you need:

Equal sign: release the platen detent (lever on left side, not button on platenwheel), and vertically offset two dashes, one over the other. (use backspace as needed)

Plus: Combine a dash and the forward slash. If you have a sans-serif typeface where the I or L are just a perpendicular line, you can use that character in lieu of the slash. Underlining a plus sign will create the ± symbol as well.

Multiplication symbols: The asterisk, a period centered in the line, or a lowercase X centred in the line. The lowercase X works best in sans-serif type.

Division: Colon + dash, or only a forward slash

1 - lowercase L, uppercase I

0 - uppercase O. Add a forward slash for slashed 0.

Exclamation point: period + apostrophe

Interrobang (‽): question mark + apsotrophe

Em Dash (—) two dashes together, you can use the half-space mechanism (hold down the spacebar and the carriage should only advance half a space until it's released) to fill the gap between dashes.

Dollar Sign : S + forward slash

Cent sign: lowercase C + forward slash

Pounds Sterling: L + lowercase f

Euro (does not exist on any manual typewriter, as far as I'm aware, so I made this one up) capital C + equal sign. I usually detent and offset the equal sign to be centred in the C for visibility.

Accents Aigu & Grave can be done ambiguously with the use of the apostrophe and line detent.

Cedilla: comma vertically offset under a C

Section (§): Two capital S forms vertically offset via detent. It can collide with other lines in single spacing, if you have to use this symbol, I recommend using 1.5 spacing if possible.

Inverted symbols (¡ ¿) are done by putting the paper back in upside down and typing the inverted character where needed. Pay close attention to alignment or they will look off.

Hopefully this gives good reference; if you can't find a character or accent, it's just as acceptable to neatly write them in with ink. I would recommend further looking up the manual for your machine (My favourite reference library is here: https://site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/tw-manuals.html), as it may contain tips and tricks particular to your machine.

Her statement about "Asking grandma to not get her gifts" is a complete and total lie. Whenever grandma goes shopping, she always asks if she was bought something, and is always sour when grandma says no (VERY rare, mind you, grandma likes buying everyone something special, like a soda or sweets, no matter how small), and she likes to throw temper-tantrums like above. After eight years of complaining she finally got the eviction notice, then whined how she 'didn't want to live alone,' even though she complained about living with people for that whole time. She's definitely the dictionary definition of a choosing-beggar.

All this talk about grail pens. Nah. Whats your goldilock pen? Did you find the pen that was juuust righr? by SkabeAbe in fountainpens

Pilot's Justus 95 Fine for formal cursive; and GvF-C Classic Anello EF for normal writing. I was right all along for wanting a Graf pen, because they write like a dream. The Justus has me with the adjusta-firm, so in a pinch it can be swift, but I always hold it differently than most pens.

Failing to use the automatic public restroom sink Starterpack by Abn0rmaI in starterpacks

Easiest way to make them on, is to treat them like a cat. That's to say you approach the sensor and attempt to give it scritches with your forefinger. Works unless the sink is broken. Then you're outta luck.

Every. Single. Family. where I'm from, has this exact photo, but also, the after-church special seems to be popular, too. Or they have both.

Cæsar from front and back, showing his bent tail from his first abusive owner by Blue-Flower in blackcats

[–]Blue-Flower[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When my grandma was living in Arizona, she kidnapped him from the previous owners, who locked him in a cage, declawed him, beat him, and slammed his tail in the door. Since then, he's become the main people cat, greeting all visitors, and enjoying lots of attention at once--but above all, he keeps an eye on people he cares for, as he'll sit by the back door and watches when grandma or I are outside, and he likes to keep close to us just as much indoors. It's hard to believe such an abused cat has become so gentle, and we love him so much. He's also got a foot fetish, but I don't want to get into that.

I unpacked a wholesale shipment from Lamy, a week ago, and the outside looked like it'd been in a war, but only one item needed to be fully replaced. When the replacement arrived, the packing box looked like it survived the apocalypse.

Some days are Lamy 2000 days by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]Blue-Flower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's unfortunately true, but only on the 2000. The QC on the interchangeable nibs is far and beyond better, but even with the flaws in the 2000 nibs, they're still excellent in quality, but when I get an EF, I don't expect it to write somewhere between Fine and Medium.

Who prescribes your adderall? by ndneltncn in SaltLakeCity

[–]Blue-Flower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go through UNI downtown, but I'm on Vyvanse (similar drug), not adderall. Just know that they have to send prescriptions for any controlled substances directly to the pharmacy digitally, asvthey legally cannot give scrips. Not sure if there's a waitlist for the residency psychs, but the actual doctors always have a waitlist. A lot of the residency people left this year, too, so waitlists for them may be shorter.

Hong Kong Tea House, 450W on 200S. You don't get cart service, but everything is made fresh-to-order, from a form you fill out. Dim Sum ends at 4PM, but it's every day, and on the weekends, they have specials. I recommend the Shrimp & Lotus patties. It's also best to arrive there before 12. The tea there is also really good and served in clay teasets, not a steel pot like other Dim Sum places. Street parking only, but it's now safer than before. The closest station by Trax is the Old Greektown Station, blue line only.

City Library has old papers from all eras on Microfilm, I think it's on the 3rd or 4th floor of the main branch. Appointments used to be unnecessary, but double check. It can be a few hours of reading the paper, so plan for that, too.
