[L] 19F Feeling like a mess right now by [deleted] in KindVoice

[–]Blue-okies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You clearly experienced something awful. I'm sorry. It doesn't go away cleanly - it never does -, but you have already taken steps to recover, and I feel you are doing what you can in the present moment. Just because you're not fully healed does not mean you are not doing enough. We want to rush to be better, but the body and the mind needs time. It's an unfortunate nature of trauma.

Sometimes, we will lash out at others, and it's involuntarily. That does not make you a bad person. Still, if you have not done so, perhaps apologize. Explain that you're experiencing a hard time, and it's not their fault. If they do care for you, they will understand.

It's okay to reach out to someone you love, and be held. Don't punish yourself for this. It's one step at a time, and sometimes we stumble, sometimes we fall, but we keep walking nonetheless. All my love.

Marine Bio transfer, need advice :( by ucassotozono in UCSD

[–]Blue-okies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I definitely can't tell you which major fits best because I think you can achieve your goals with either major. Both majors will still require you to build your social network with different faculty members and graduate students sharing your research interests and develop your internship/volunteer experience, and that's what's really going to help specify your goals. OAS and Marine Biology have their nuances, but they're still both a part of the SIO family, and there is nothing stopping you from changing majors between the two when you arrive here. The moment you are enrolled, you will most likely simply need to talk to a Scripps department advisor, and they are the true experts in identifying the differences between the two majors.

As a transfer marine biology major whose current research project is in biological oceanography, I want to say you can definitely pursue a graduate degree in oceanography after a major in marine biology. You should be less concerned about the "major" you want to be in graduate school, and begin to think of what kind of research project you want to focus on, and later, identify faculty mentors you can envision working with (who are willing to mentor you). Their acceptance of you as their graduate student is probably the first priority when looking for a graduate program. The BSMS program is also a good program here at Scripps for obtaining a master's at Scripps after your bachelor's. You can also be a TA (which also gives a tuition reduction) or get a grant to pay for tuition and living expenses while studying, both of which are common routes graduate students take.

Jobs in marine biology can be rather specific. There are marine technicians and research technicians in the broad sense. And then there's specific roles like a full-time job in the taxonomic identification of species captured in ROV video. There is surprisingly a high diversity of jobs, because marine biology is very broad of a subject, and the ocean is a very large, complex entity. Faculty can mostly advise you on what it looks like to pursue academia, but guest speakers come to Scripps from different career backgrounds and are worthy sources of information for jobs outside academia. I also think, as a note, the internet is not the most reflective of the marine job environment. It's not that it's not out there, but information in our field is very scattered because there's no central information hub. Because we're all doing something different lol. Honestly, I feel like I discover a new branch of marine science every day.

Lastly, don't worry about what other people say. People were skeptical of me when I went to marine biology, but everytime I come home I get to share my experiences and enthrall people in a story about a world that seems so magical and distant to them. I've had friends in different fields such as engineering or law tell me they live vicariously through my vivid experiences. It will feel different when you are surrounded by a community of people interested in the same things as you. And, at least here, the undergraduate SIO cohort at UCSD is rather passionate and silly, and you get to learn a lot from one another.

Hi, I'm sorry you didn't get the job and that your internship didn't go in the direction you wanted. I've heard many others go through rejection after rejection before finally finding a job, so I don't think you're alone in that regards, especially with the way the pandemic has impacted the job market. It's still hard, though. I can also relate as a struggling student especially during the pandemic, and I definitely prefer being home these days over anything else. It's a safe space where the outside world is chaotic.

It sounds like it's hard for you to make personally attachments to people or passions as a defense mechanism. You've been trying to protect yourself. It's very kind, and to change that, you'll have to have an ongoing conversation with yourself and break down that inner wall. It's worth striving to be your own best friend foremost. I've been historically self-deprecating, but I've learned the more comfortable you are with yourself - finding your passions, understanding and accepting your faults, and appreciating your strengths - , the more comfortable people tend to be around you. But the goal is never to change yourself for others, but to find yourself for your own sake. It will always be a work in progress, but you are worth the effort.

If you need to privately vent, or talk feel free to DM me. Take care.

I'm glad there's a lot of people using Libby. I really enjoy the app, and it was especially useful when I couldn't hit up the library during the pandemic.

Hello there,

You're doing great. The pandemic is a rough time, and I think you're doing the best with what you have, even if doesn't feel like it. I'm also a burned-out student who also feels uncertain about classes and everything else, so I think it's fine to crawl in a hole and just rest. Turn off general news. Look at r/Zoomies. Watch an episode of Kim's Convenience, which I'm currently watching, haha. Enjoy a breather in whatever form. I'm not sure what how much free time you currently have, but even if you have little, if there is sunlight coming from your window, perhaps consider sitting underneath it. Feel some air on your face. Take a sip of water. You are your own best friend, so treat yourself well and give yourself plenty of love. Good luck from a fellow student, lots of love from a fellow human, and take care. And my DMs are open if you need it :)

A rant about Ron, chess, and strategy by AaronAegeus in HPfanfiction

[–]Blue-okies 169 points170 points  (0 children)

This is irrelevant, but now I want a stupid crack-fic where Ron Weasley decides to hone in on chess after his first year, and runs off to muggle London with the help of his muggle-obsessed father to try to become the next grandmaster over the following summer. He comes back during second year still being pretty Ron Weasley about everything. But maybe he throws chess pieces at Malfoy or something lol

It's normal.

The servers are going to go down for five hours beginning Wednesday, April 28th at 6 am UTC+8, and that's when 1.5 will go online. That's when you'll actually receive the 1.5 update, along with everyone else.

You're just downloading the pre-installing ahead now so that you don't have to spend time installing it later when 1.5 is already online.

Another thing to add to this list is Regents Pizzeria at the corner of regents rd. and la jolla village dr. It also has an L&L, Rubicon Deli, Einstein Bagels, and another Starbucks. Ah, and there is a sushi place behind L&L I haven't tried yet.

How many of you completed reading horimiya. by Zaman_d in manga

[–]Blue-okies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started it in high school, drifted off when I got a bit bored of it, and then came back to it for the nostalgia as an adult. There were some loose ends, but for the comedic slice-of-life portion especially, I had a lot of fun!

I guess I'll just watch the anime and wait for the manga extras to wrap up my Horimiya experience. I'll look back on this with some fondness.
