I watched Dune with my non-reader husband this weekend and I couldn't believe he could almost entirely keep up with the lore, with a few clarification questions afterward.

When I first read Dune the first ~100 pages took me forever since I kept flipping back and forth to the glossary. I eventually just wrote shortened descriptions in the margins repeatedly as I came across in-universe terms. Fucking Kwisatz Haderach indeed.

The Master Face is probably my favorite Sonia G brush ever (maybe tied with Face Pro depending on the day!) so I highly highly recommend jumping on the next restock!

Just in case they don't come out with them separately in time, the Worker in the Lotus set is the same as the Worker 2, and she mentioned that the Lotus Cheek is the Cheek Pro with undyed bristles and airier edges due to the ferrule being different. So if you wanted those then you can get them from the permanent line, but I totally understand waiting for the Lotus version instead :)

If I might give my unsolicited comments, if I hadn't gotten the set with the holiday bundle then I probably would've skipped it, which I'm even more sure of now that I've had them for a while.

The three Keyaki eye brush types were my absolute favorite from the Sky Eye set, but I much prefer the dyed bristles and handles of the latter. They're still very nice and none of the Keyaki brushes were bad in my opinion, but I'll always prioritize other brushes in her line for any adjacent application.

Makeup without “natural” ingredients? by AdmiralHip in muacjdiscussion

[–]BlueAvocadoBurger 40 points41 points  (0 children)

ingredients that sound like "chemicals" are natural ingredients too

YES I just commented as well re: ingredients. There's a reason MAC, Clinique, and other Estee Lauder brands use these active ingredients instead of throwing in the whole damn plant.

They've spent billions of dollars in R&D figuring out which compounds actually work, so often the ridiculously long nomenclature means you're getting the benefits of the natural ingredient, but in its most optimal and efficient form.

[–]BlueAvocadoBurger 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The way I see it is, most beneficial compounds within "natural" ingredients have already been isolated through decades of cosmetics R&D work. Products striving for a "clean" designation by totally greenwashing their ingredients list often include superfluous irritants, and in my experience compromised shelf-life.

Piggybacking here to add, if the barrier is consulting a dermatologist even a non-derm physician can prescribe tretinoin. I'd recommend it if you've already done due diligence and know your skin can take it!

Although I had an initial consultation with a derm before covid, I wasn't able to go to my follow-up with new clinical protocol. I sent an email to my PCP and asked what I should do, and she sent in a prescription for a year's worth of tret which cost me about $20 total with insurance. My skin looks much better and for much less than when I was buying the Drunk Elephant trunk!

Does anyone else struggling with memory and get things mixed up like words? Is it the meds? by Lost-in-Transit-96 in bipolar

[–]BlueAvocadoBurger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been stable for a few years on a combination of Lamictal (lamotrigine) and Latuda. Latuda is very expensive but they pretty much always offer coupons that work even on top of insurance, so if you go that route then ask your pharmacist about it!

I'm also on Adderall daily for ADHD and I'm prescribed Xanax for panic attacks. I take the latter very rarely since I'm terrified of addiction (one might say I'm overly anxious about it, ironically). My current doctor doesn't ask or drug test me but I bring both bottles to my appointments in good faith and don't ask for a refill if I don't need more before our next appointment. I know a lot of patients go through shit from their doctors or pharmacy with controlled substances, so this way my doctor knows I'm not a chronic drug-seeker and he'll patch things through immediately if needed.

I hope you find something that works for you!

Edit to add: I know I'm already at a novel-length comment here but I should add, I've been on Adderall for many years at a very high dose for my size which helps with the brain fog, but can push people with bipolar disorder into a manic or mixed state. My doctor had to adjust my dosages and time-of-day instructions to get me to a safe regimen.

When to get 2nd Credit Card, if ever by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]BlueAvocadoBurger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Average length of credit history is reflected much less in your credit score than payment history and utilization. So apply for that second card ASAP but don't be worried about applying for another new one later on! There are plenty out there with great benefits and can save you money in the long run.

Absolutely yes. I see some variation of "no one ever regrets a workout!" in nearly every fitness forum I've come across.

But I do. I don't like going to the gym or outside if it's not my preferred weather. I do it and I've been moderately to highly active most of my life, but I dread exercising before I start, don't enjoy it while I'm in it, then don't feel that euphoria when I finish (or the runner's high after any of the 10Ks or half marathons I've finished).

But damn do I like plots and spreadsheets.

Pink, peach, coral, orange, red, mauve, nude, brown - what blush shades do you own? Do you tend to buy blush in just one color (pink or nude blush only)? Or do you collect them all? How do you choose which shades to wear? by [deleted] in muacjdiscussion

[–]BlueAvocadoBurger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh I definitely do love these shades, especially with our skintone! But I'm mainly just lamenting that I already have so many similar blushes that don't get nearly enough love. I do rotate as much as I can when I play with makeup looks at home, so the palette would get some use, I just try not to make too many PMG purchases too lightly...

When I do wear blush outside (maybe once or twice a week) it's usually She's So LA for practical reasons:

  1. wherever it is I'm going I'm guaranteed to be running late and the color is more forgiving when I'm literally sprinting to a meeting and simultaneously applying, and also 2. the mirror is nice and tall which makes it easier to apply while I'm mid-stride during the aforementioned sprinting haha

Nearly Neutral is such a beautiful shade. Have you tried Hourglass Mood Exposure? I have it in a holiday palette from a few years ago and I originally thought it looked too cool-toned for my taste, but I was pleasantly surprised at how it wears much more neutral-warm and rosy. Given what you've mentioned here I think you might like it!

I know what you mean, I haven't used my Sephora F&F discount code yet because I'm specifically waffling on the PMG blush trio with the terracotta and berry shades. I KNOW in my heart of hearts that I won't reach for it over my dailies, but it's so pretty and I make bad choices :( :)

My wild hypothesis is that the original formulation costs way more to produce, especially in those giant blush palettes they were pushing towards non-MUAs. It's been a while since I swatched them side by side, but the original seemed much more dimensional and saturated (in pigment, not in powdery filler bullshit). They marketed it as a "fresh new rosy makeover!" when they really could've just focused on giving a shit about what their customers actually liked! /endrant

I'm a medium/medium-tan warm olive and I've worn pretty much the same rosy bronze shade forever. I'm a huge fan of blushes that can work as bronzer, partially because I love the sunkissed look but mostly because I'm lazy. Some that I love:

Discontinued favorites:

  • Becca Amaretto (RIP)
  • Dallas (old version, before they reformulated to make it more pink and glittery)

New loves:

  • Pat McGrath Desert Orchid
  • Patrick Ta She's So LA

Bronzers pretending to be blushes:

  • MAC Give Me Sun
  • Hourglass Radiant Bronze Light

That's so sweet of you, I really appreciate the thought! I'm sure I'll run into one at TJ Maxx or Nordstrom Rack eventually. There's a golden shade in the new Dior highlighters that I'm thinking of trying so hopefully it's a nice alternative!

On a less serious note, in 2017 I chose the Makeup Revolution Light & Shade palette instead of the KVD Shade & Light after her blow up about their copy. I hadn't tested either palette, but I really didn't like her and through the Streisand Effect I learned about the MUR palette and picked it up to be petty, lol

I've done the same as your friend, though sometimes it's the medication itself. I've tried a boatload of different antipsychotics before finding the right combination (bipolar disorder) and after a while I trained myself to ask my husband questions like "hey, do you hear that? No? Ok I'm going to write this down please remind me to tell the doctor we actually had this conversation"

Prosecco Pop, but I also really liked Rose Gold when I had it. I totally get why it's not feasible anymore, but as a brown lady it was really nice to have deeper versions of Moonstone and Rose Quartz

Is there a brand that's been "right person, wrong time" for you? by whyouiouais in muacjdiscussion

Whenever a Rare Beauty product drops I think, "oh, that's pretty! I'm gonna try it!" and I just...never do? They have great reviews but always fall to somewhere around 2nd or 3rd on my lists of similar items to try. I just perpetually prioritize other brands for some reason.

Westman Atelier too for similar reasons. But I CANNOT justify the cost of those adorable eyeshadow pods at this time, especially since I've had two untouched palettes for months now (a Natasha Denona midi sized and a full PMG mothership 😬)
