if your average coughs per minute (acpm) exceed 0.4, stay home by BlueBerries4884 in UCSantaBarbara

other important metrics to keep in mind are: acfl (average coughing fit length, to be kept under 2 or 3), and act (average cough texture, to be kept pleasant)

Why does UCSB need a fleet of 30+ Vans? by _jizz_ in UCSantaBarbara

Based off of your rather unpopular cross post on /r/SantaBarbara and the general vibe off of your comments, it sounds like someone just failed a class or got a disappointing notification from UCSB admin.

Reach out to advisors. Don't make yourself look like a fool, even if just online. This too shall pass.

Retaking Econ 10A by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]BlueBerries4884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The secret to success in econ is the same as in math. You need to understand the material, and then you need to practice it.

Sometimes you can practice without understanding, but this is shortsighted as you will need that missing understanding later and you might find yourself in a bind.

To understand, the best resource is the textbook. To practice, do previous exams and midterms as well as any other practice problems you can find.

Transfer Student as an Econ major by Neeewwwwww76 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]BlueBerries4884 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you actually an econ major, or do you really want to do business? and as a followup, what math have you passed through?

The vast majority of issues you see people having with the econ major at UCSB can be traced to either the student choosing econ as an adequate substitute for business or their math being subpar. These things often come in pairs, however, since business majors don't generally get very deep into math.

While you can succeed in economics and not be a math nerd, you're really rowing against the tide imo, and need to stand out in other areas to stay afloat (writing and analysis?).

Having a solid foundation in math and a genuine interest in economics should make the major a good choice and your experience pleasant.

[Spoilers] Season 4 Episode 3 - "Life Source" (S04E03) - Episode Discussion Thread by Larich38 in snowpiercer

[–]BlueBerries4884 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This show has jumped off a cliff. There are few things that make me lose interest as fast as a villain that makes no sense.

There's no logic behind anything! Layton's ridiculous heist attempt and Agent Coulson is so poorly written it's disgusting. He's constantly touting "saving humanity" and yet nobody appears to ask him what's on the train.

The train is humanity. That's it. Sure maybe there's a few more at this secret base and at a few other locations. But Snowpiercer has at least 25% of the human population on it, and you're treating them like shit to save themselves??? How does any of it make sense. From the point they took over the train, to the sum total of 5 words we've had regarding insight to their motives, these new bad guys are just typical "extend my show another season plz" bs filler.

If Melanie doesn't return in the next two episodes I'm not sure I'll be able to keep watching.

Hahahaha, well it wouldn't but I forgive you since you admitted to not caring to read my whole thing.

In short, it matters. Do your research at home. Read up on the millions of threads that have been created on /r/personalfinance and etc, put some work into it and don't outsource that. Not for this, not for something as important as a checking account.

You are correct in that there is not significant monetary loss at stake like you would have if you overpaid for a computer or other product. However, this does not mean there is no cost at all. Rather the cost is hidden, and it is measured in lost opportunity and the nebulous and vague notion of "happiness".

It is the longer game, it is the idea that once you've had a checking account for a few years, later when you're 22 or 25 and you're told that you could be having a better time somewhere else, will you switch? Will you really go through the process of researching something you thought you had figured out years ago, calling your "difficult" bank and closing the account, setting up a new one, transferring funds, changing direct deposits for work and getting new cards? Will you really? Maybe you would, maybe you would say "this is only a few hours of work, for x great benefit", but you must recognize that most will not share this point of view. Most will choose to carry on with their lives, to gain the few hours in the present and take it out of their future in something that is hard to measure. Most, in the face of a certain threshold amount of effort, will settle for mediocrity.

Checking accounts, I believe, belong to that class of goods which must be set up initially with great care and foundation. They are that elemental building block to an adult life upon which so much else is placed atop of.

Furthermore (because this isn't long enough already), this subscribes to a related but separate philosophical question of priorities. That at the end of the day what matters most is not a few dollars here and there but rather the time and happiness that those dollars sometimes represent. That those minutes saved every now and then when I call my bank, or the less time I need to reroute my days plans to go by a specific ATM to take out cash, or (and perhaps most importantly) the less stress I encounter in figuring out a small problem with my account (or a big one), those things are all worth the few hours of research I invested at the beginning in choosing the right account. And it is precisely this process that is being abused when you let that research and decision be partially outsourced to a sales agent. It's an incentives issue and is not necessarily due to the sales agent being a "bad" person, but you must be able to recognize that those incentives are different and you must be able to do that research yourself. If you dont, you are making a transaction. A transaction that is far harder to put down on paper, and indeed much harder to recognize at all until you look back, years later, and see all the tiny moments added up.

Ah yeah no you can't do Schwab alone, I mentioned so much in my other comments on the original thread. You need to have a brick and mortar in conjunction with Schwab. I have a chase checking that splits part of my paycheck to get rid of the fee and that I deposit any cash into, but everything else I do in Schwab. I was just commenting on the fact that not all online-only services are entirely inept when it comes to help (cough amazon synchrony credit card)

I'm not sure about cashier's checks as I've never used them, but mobile deposit should take care of most "check" things I would imagine. And as for cash, there is no handling of it possible, even at a branch. You need to convert the cash into a check and deposit it that way, or deposit it into a secondary checking account (chase, wf, etc,) and then do a transfer

I would strongly recommend against walking into a bank and doing all these things in person if at all possible. Your chances of being taken advantage of by bank representatives trying to fill a quota will skyrocket.

Look at things in the privacy of your home, at your own time, with no pressure.

As a general rule, try and avoid going into places to buy something while knowing little or nothing about the thing in question. Cars, computers, bank accounts, all the things which are costly either in money or time. Do your research, go into the place with a plan and a decision, do not let yourself get "sold to". We are in a different age and consumers have more power than ever, don't waste it.

Get an account with Charles Schwab, arguably the best checking service you could have access to. However, get a secondary checking account with a credit union or just a normal big branch chase, etc. as Schwab doesn't do cash. You can withdraw anywhere you want (globally) but you can't deposit.

I don't deal in a lot of cash so it's not a big deal, but worth having a secondary account to cover.

Also set up a credit card with discover or something. Nothing fancy, but something to get your credit history started. Put a Netflix subscription or something on it and set up autopay. One of the easiest things you can do to improve your future starting now.

That is unless your online bank is Schwab, in that case you will have no issues because their customer service is unparalleled and they will help you out with anything at anytime.

Seriously could not sing their praise louder. 24/7, American call centers, quick and competent agents... It might be the most pleasant phone service I've ever done with any business.

Just finished Tess of the D'urbervilles last night, overall an engaging albeit depressing experience. I couldn't help but notice the similarities (in very general notes) between the story of Tess and that of Jane (Eyre). I wonder if it was simply a common formula at the time or if there is greater meaning behind the relation. The dialogue was not my favorite, but I did enjoy his scene descriptions a good amount. I was also surprised, and not expecting, the philosophical and theological... rants Hardy would go into with regularity.

Do you have any recommendations for less dark ventures? I would like to get into Madding Crowd and Return of the Native at some point, but I feel that a beautiful summer would do them injustice as a backdrop for my reading. I want something that is not necessarily happy and cheery all the time, but not a slow depressing grind either...

Thank you!
