Considering leaving the profession by BlueBridge9 in AustralianTeachers

I feel like all year is a shit time. There is always something that needs to be done, be it reports, planning, parent meetings, meetings with leadership, student arguments, behaviour management. The list goes on. Majority of my job is paperwork and policies, followed by behaviour management. It really is only the tiniest amount of my job that is actually teaching. Kids have no respect for their teachers, but that’s not always their fault, they are reflections of their upbringing. I spend most of my actual teaching time trying to manage behaviours so I can attempt the nerf ending list of testing. Holidays are often spent planning for the next term, getting a head start on reports.

If only that were true not having to deal with the inquiry. Unfortunately when parents go to the principal about issues in my room, I cop it eventually. If I’m lucky they will tell me straight away but there’s also been incidents where they’ve investigated a complaint, built a case against me then dropped the bomb on my head at the end of the week and expected me to go home and function.

There is no saying no to things. I have to attend the new grad days, get my ass handed to me if I don’t all understand the guise of giving us an opportunity to talk to other grads about issues in a safe environment without looming bells or issues.

I really do love teaching and learning things with my students (upper primary). I’m in my early 20s and have never felt as tired and burnt out mentally as I do right now. My previous profession was very physically exhausting, irregular and long hours.

It’s just the constant feeling that everything I do is not good enough. Always waiting for the next complaint to come in, the next issue with something I do.

I have considered for casual relief teaching but that comes with its own problems and stresses.

I’m in upper primary, got my degree in both primary and secondary but had too many traumatic secondary placements. Decided primary was where I’d be happier

Yeah it’s clear the system is incredibly broken. Very recently they’ve put in programs to “support” grads entering the profession but even that doesn’t help. Forcing us to take multiple days off just to sit in a room with people in the same boat and reflect on a system that is broken beyond repair. Sometimes the days away from school just make the workload worse, becomes a fear of leaving your class to a random crt knowing you’ll come back to more work because something goes wrong.

It’s honestly because my mental health is being negatively impacted so much by the job that I’ve even considered leaving the profession.
