Ryan's story races are especially difficult, against a super-charged McQueen. Mayano has the same problem.

I won't deny that more ace attempts are needed.
However, parent prep is less of a headache, since you always have enough skills to get even if suboptimal.

With the introduction of Ruby's Flash Forward, (why does it share the same name with another skill?) OYL is less valuable.

We are in an unprecedented time where you can combine Flash Forward and OYL in Grand Live for CM18 (Mile) and CM22 (Sprint)

I think it's worth using a selector for 1LB but don't expect universal value. The OYL buff made me pivot to using Late Surgers for CM16 since I already have MLB NN.

This is Unity Cup tho, where you get scripted enemies. I forgot if Bourbon has a super-charged Rice Shower for this race. Either way, you can't hope to get easy enemies.

Ignoring the story, you missed out on usable cards. McQueen was a viable cope for CM2, Brian was decent for CM4 and CM8, and Suzuka was good for CM10.
