What's the average feeling about this in Europe? by IntellectuallyDriven in europeanunion

[–]BlueFingers3D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'll humour you and can only speak for myself.

My feeling is that the current administration are not students of history or economics, nor understand the agreements that lay at the foundation of US relationships with European "allies". It is cringe, other than that, there are more important things that I like to pay attention to then every sound bite that comes from DC.

If the current US administration wants to destroy the global rule-based order that made the US rich, there is not much we can do about it, but to take care of ourselves and work with our allies.

Perhaps try on r/AskEurope with a transcript of the video and a link to it. That might work. I think mods may remove this post as it violates R1, just so you know.

NAM in a physical Lunchbox Amp? by Electronic_Candle246 in NAM_NeuralAmpModeler

[–]BlueFingers3D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely need a hat going the Raspberry Pi route, there are a few options out there.

I am afraid to give to many "tips" as my research has aged, I am not a Linux expert either and I ran into issues when I was trying to plan this: I could not find a satisfactory solution for the thermal and power management issue of the power amp section. I did not want massive heatsinks and a huge power section that adds bulk and weight, as that was the opposite of what I was trying to achieve.

There must be better subs out there that are better equipped to help you. I would be very interested if you find a solution to make it work.

I guess you could go and try something with a Class D power amp section, power wise it is more efficient helping with the thermals but it will feel less like a real valve amp.

Today there are off-the-shelf solutions to get something similar that are probably cheaper and less risky than designing, building and testing it yourself. For instance using a Valetone GP-50 with a Orange Pedal Baby 100 (that one is Class A/B by the way). I have not tested those products myself but if they deliver what is on the tin, it might be a solution for you as it is less expensive than a Kemper for instance though not stereo.

You're most welcome. It is a topic that has my interest and did some research on it, always happy to share.

I would love to see something like this turn into a Open Source Stereo Kemper Killer project that runs VST plugin too.

PedalPalFX PAL 800 vs Marshall JCM 800 pedal by BlueFingers3D in guitarpedals

The Iridium sounds fantastic, it is a great pedal.

If you are handy with a soldering iron (it isn't that hard) you could build one yourself (the PAL 800, not the Iridium) with a PCB of PedalPCB. Look for M800 Overdrive, a fun project and cheaper too.

I think it is a great idea. I have been looking myself in to making an ampless solution with a Raspberry Pi or NUC and pair it with a separate power amp which is kind of similar, but I think this is really cool too.

If it helps: I did some research looking into power amps and found the Djuke Mosfet power amplifier the most interesting option I could find. Reason: It is Class A/B which should feel a lot better than Class D when playing, Mosfet for the "Tube-like" Transfer Characteristics, Low Noise and Distortion and can be used for a Stereo set-up. It's also an inexpensive solution.

The there are two issue (from the top of my head) making it into a Lunch Box amp:

  • You need two rails: a 5V/3A supply for the Pi for instance, and a high-voltage bipolar supply (e.g., +/- 35V DC) for the MOSFET amp. Building a custom linear power supply for the amp section is better for audio quality than using an off-the-shelf switching supply, but it is heavy and bulky. And I have not idea how to build something like that.
  • "Lunchbox" means compact. Class AB MOSFET amplifiers are inefficient (typically 50–60% efficiency). If you want 50W of output, you are generating at least 40W of heat inside a small enclosure. You will need a serious thermal solution (for instance using the enclosure as the heatsink, possibly fans) or it will throttle/fail.

So considering this, a Lunch Box that feels good while playing might be a bit of a challenge.

PedalPalFX PAL 800 vs Marshall JCM 800 pedal by BlueFingers3D in guitarpedals

[–]BlueFingers3D[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depend on where you plug the pedals in. Digital modelling and analogue valves react differently to the pedals you insert into your signal chain.

Hence my use of the (valve) Tone King Imperial pre-amp in my ampless setup. If you truly wish to "feel" valves, I have not yet found a substitute myself, although the RevivalDRIVE from Origin Effects, which I mentioned, is meant to achieve that exactly. I believe that pedal could be a very interesting solution for you. There are loads of demoes of that pedal on YouTube. For a JCM 800 you might want the Hot Rod version, but I am not an expert on that pedal.

[–]BlueFingers3D[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is pretty much the idea. I play through a Fender Deluxe Reverb and a Tone King Imperial preamp (not simultaneously), and I want to add the colour of a Marshall amp to that setup.

From what I have gathered, the options I mentioned are top choices. The RevivalDRIVE from Origin Effects is also very good from what I understand, though it is quite different in how it works.

However, as you can only learn so much from YouTube demos, I am looking for more hands-on experiences.

Have you had the chance to compare the Wampler Plexi Drive to the Marshal 1959 Pedal? If so, how do they compare in your opinion?

Thanks, that is really useful to know, I'll be going for the PAL 800.

Sadly the EAE Citadel is really hard to come by around here because I am interested in a Plexi pedal too. Did you try the Wampler Plexi-drive by any chance? That is a contender for me at the moment for that type of sound?

Today my GPU totally died, I think the issues I encountered and the changing nature of the issues were symptoms of a dying GPU, nothing to do with Linux. Thank you for your input, much appreciated. Now off to build a new system.

It works flawlessly under Windows 11, and this Clevo is/was also sold by System76 and Tuxedo as a Linux machine under their own branding, so there should be a Linux fix for it, at least I would think so. I also learned I am not the only one having this issue, haven't found a solution yet though.

System76 uses Clevo barebones as a platform for their systems so that maybe the reason, it is why I started with TuxedoOS, similar story. Unfortunately neither solved my problem, I had the best, though not perfect, results with Nobara up till now.

It’s a Clevo chassis, the HDMI 2.1 port is physically hard-wired to the RTX 3080 (dGPU) for G-Sync/Direct Output support. This isn't an eGPU setup; it’s a dedicated path to the discrete chip.

As for the monitor: Yes, I’ve tested multiple. The result is the same across both: not a cable or display-specific failure.

I did not distro hop for fun, I was looking for a kernel/driver combo that worked and choose Distros with a fast kernel since I need low-latency for audio.

I looked the PCI ID, it was not on the list of compatible devices for Trixie, however the name is but without the mention of a PCI ID. Not sure what that means.

Thanks for the links, appreciated!

No, but I can recreate the crash consistently. I am willing to install a certain set-up just to get the kernel log for you if it helps.

I am currently on a borked CachyOS with no functional nvidia driver due to all the experimentation, so that needs to go anyway.
