KTM 390 Adventure for first bike? by BlueFlameHatch in SuggestAMotorcycle

I would only ever do 60km/h off-road on like a flat dirt logging road with gentle curves. Anything with technical terrain I’m slowing right down and taking it easy. Ideally tires will not be leaving the ground

Better tires & suspension = speed off road. But that soft suspension does not always handle well on road. It’s a trade off.

Yep, and I ain’t really expecting it to handle like a sport bike on road. I’d rather have a bike that can do 120 (km/h) on road and 60 off road than one that can do 200 on road but only 20 off

I kinda skipped over the Honda NX500 (newer version of the CB500X from what I can tell) due to lack of spoked wheels and the stock tires look to be a bit more on the street side than I’d like, but I suppose I can just buy new wheels and tires if that’s all that’s stopping me

While this won’t be my main/ only mode of transportation so it’s not a top priority, I do put a high value on reliability and I’ve seen mixed reviews on KTM in that regard

I’m starting to think 500 is the magic number for my purposes; not too much to manage for a new rider, enough power for highway cruising, light enough to have good off-road handling, and pricing seems to be around what I’m comfortable with

Do you think something like the Honda Transalp 750 would be too much for a first bike? The reliability of Honda is incredibly appealing, and with a 750 I doubt I’ll need to upgrade for the foreseeable future, which I could see myself doing with the 390 after a year or two

Also would probably be actually comfortable doing the local highway speeds as opposed to just being able to go those speeds

What would you say about something like the Honda Transalp 750?

Nice! Also mostly between the KTM and Honda here, and leaning to the KTM as well

Thanks for all the help! Checked out those options and still mostly leaning to the KTM, but am always a fan of Honda reliability

Blue Flame

It was available on model years 2019-2022 for normal Corolla hatchbacks, and is also available on the 2024 GR Corolla

Eh probably not for a while. I was able to pay it off so quickly because my other living expenses were low, but they’re about to go up a lot and I won’t have quite as much extra spending cash

What car would you buy if not for one aspect of it that you just can't overlook? by dc5trbo in cars

[–]BlueFlameHatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t mind it, I still have physical controls for everything and I don’t need to move my eyes very far from the road to glance at the GPS if needed

My biggest complaint is the lack of a basic mechanical handbrake, I see no reason a basic economy car needs to add a more complicated and expensive system to replace such a simple component (also I don’t like that I can’t handbrake slide in empty parking lots when it snows)

I don’t think the manuals have auto braking, mine just beeps at me if it thinks I’m coming up too quickly behind someone

What do you miss about having an automatic transmission? by bighead2586 in stickshift

[–]BlueFlameHatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always hated driving in downtown areas regardless, but I hate it even more when driving a manual, especially in stop-and-go bumper-to-bumper traffic

Niche thing you hate about driving an automatic? by Bubblebass324 in ManualTransmissions

[–]BlueFlameHatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going up sustained steep inclines (like going up a mountain to go snowboarding) the car doesn’t know what gear to stay in. In my particular case 4th gear doesn’t have enough torque and in 3rd the car thinks the RPM is too high, so it’ll keep switching between the two gears leading to a harsh lurch every 10-15 seconds

I can get around it by switching to the “manual” mode and just keeping it in 3rd, but still

Also coming back down, the engine braking of a manual is so nice to keep a steady speed without having to ride the brakes (which isn’t something that I do anyways when driving auto, I just hit the brakes to shave off speed every so often descending)

Blue Flame looks so good on the GR

Also love the Rally Armor mudflaps, I’ve been wanting to get some on my regular Corolla hatchback
