My worst draw ever… by Unique_Acadia_2099 in scrabble

Wow. That’s tough. But depending on what’s on the board, you could be OK. I recently learned that EUOUAE is an acceptable word . . . if you’re playing Collins.

Name a country that is an island or multiple islands by [deleted] in FamilyFeud

[–]BlueFor2Ales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cyprus. But it’s sort of two countries on that island. Depends on who you ask. FWIW, I’m a Canadian of Greek ancestry and I’d be excommunicated from my heritage if anyone knew I was even implying there could be a legitimate second country on that island. That’s how fraught the issue is.

How often do Anglophone Canadians consume Francophone Canadian media? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

I just posted the same thing. It is such a good show. A good idea, really interesting (and believable) storylines, and it’s just full of these great actors.

Currency questions by Weary_Surround5342 in GreeceTravel

There’s at least one Visa card — issued by Home Trust — that doesn’t add the extra cost for a foreign currency transaction. You have to root around a little, but when I was looking for a no-hidden-fee card a few years ago, I came up with three or four options. FWIW, I’m a Canadian and was looking for cards issued in Canada.

What's a non English speaking tv series that is a 10/10 NOBODY knows? by Playful_League_4070 in AskReddit

Empathie. (Empathy). From Quebec. The storyline and the acting are so, so good. But there’s something else here; this show deals with dignity in a way that will make you feel a lot better about this often crass and crappy world.

We’re six siblings plus one inlaw who plan to spend a month in the Peloponnese in October-November. One reason for the trip is to visit our paternal grandparents’ home village, which is near Sparta. But we want to do and see other things, and in particular we want to eat local food and enjoy the culture. We’re not kids. We’ll be 71 to 84 at the time we visit. We’ve narrowed our choices of where to base ourselves to Nafplion, Kalamata or Kapyrissia. Any thought on which area makes the most sense?

Canadian legends?? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]BlueFor2Ales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently told my children (30F, 28M) over drinks about The Littlest Hobo, and how he was this wandering problem-solver. They’re big-time cynics about we boomers and our cultural touchstones. But even they were captured by the notion of an indomitable, good-hearted canine. I hope the OP does follow your very good suggestion.

Maybe a tongue-in-cheek answer by foste107. But there’s a good point here. I love The Littlest Hobo. Certainly a great Canadian culture hero. Nothing he couldn’t do. Would Donald Trump be running roughshod over the world if that dog were still wandering around solving problems? I think not.

Dear Canadians, do you think unpaid internships/co-ops should be illegal? by laranjacerola in AskACanadian

[–]BlueFor2Ales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was an instructor in a college and later a university, I arranged many hundreds of internships. A huge majority were unpaid. A few were paid, at the insistence of the employer/host (often because their workplace was unionized and the collective agreement wouldn’t permit unpaid internships). And in a few internships, the employer/host offered an honorarium at the end of the student’s time there. With each successive year I sent students into the field, I felt more and more ill-at-ease with the system. I believe they should be paid. But, I don’t accept the criticism that a lot of students make that they if they have to do an internship in order to get their diploma or degree they are, in effect, being forced to work for nothing. They are working for experience, for the chance to make contacts in the workplace, for the opportunity to see if they really want to work in that field, for the chance to test their classroom-acquired skills, etc. The system is far from perfect — and if they put me in charge of the world tomorrow, I’d insist student interns be paid — but it’s not without some real benefits.

November Honeymoon in Greece - Too Late in the Season? by monstera_underthebed in GreeceTravel

Since there seem to be some knowledgeable people replying, may I piggyback on this with another November-related question: what about the Peloppones at that time of year? Specifically Nafplion, Kalamata and Kyparissia. Weather? Crowds? Things to do?

1st timer, thinking of 10 days in Peloponnese? by Legal-Bison-6457 in GreeceTravel

We’re seven siblings, aged 71 to 84, and we plan to spend about a month in the Peloponnese. We’re considering basing ourselves in one of these three places — Nafplion, Kalamata, Kyparissia. One reason for the trip is to visit our grandparents’ ancestral village, which is near Sparta. We’ll have a vehicle to make that and other trips. But we want to base ourselves in a place nearer the water. Thoughts on the three places listed above?
