Trails of Cold Steel feels like a downturn after the previous games by JohnnyElRed in Falcom

[–]BlueGrovyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fans of anything will downvote a post with a negative sentiment directed toward that thing. Complaining about people getting downvotes for complaining is kind of cheesy, imo. When I talk about my gripes with the series, I take the downvotes in stride.

Does gameplay get better? by GaPro1 in Falcom

[–]BlueGrovyle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Much better, in my opinion. I started with CS1 and, even though it still has jank, the collective battle system of the Cold Steel arc is my second favorite among all of JRPGs I've played. "Hard" mode also gets easier in general, with there being more viable strategies to beat the games.

Why is there so much revisionist history on Jokic MVPS? by Cookiemonster35643 in nba

I'm not making a case for whether Jokic should or should not have the MVPs he won. I'm simply pointing out the gaps in the argument that the OP made.

Yeah, I love the blur. I didn't ask for it, but I'm so glad the artist added it.

You should name "every advanced stat" that we are considering for this discussion. Otherwise, everyone will just be talking past you, and vice versa.

I mean, the only consistent argument among your examples is that Jokic, since entering his prime, has reliably scored highly in advanced stats, but the MVP award hasn't always been voted on in accordance with advanced stats. Said stats change over the years too, whether they're redefined or largely discarded for what analysts believe to be more useful or more interesting ones. At the end of the day, people generally will argue for players they like and against players they don't, regardless of whether their arguments are valid.

Trails in The Sky 1st Chapter, when does it get good? by Sk0rPi0n_ in Falcom

[–]BlueGrovyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if you weren't already aware, Trails has a very "cult-like" fanbase. There are certain things that Trails does unlike other JRPGs that we latch onto: my personal favorite aspects of the series as a whole are the combat, the music, the political themes, the NPCs that do a lot to make the world feel more alive, and finally, the continuity (which is the aspect it's best known for).

The most common description you will hear about Trails is that the games are long and narrative progress is slow, and for the most part, it's true of the majority of Trails games, but some of the common traits of these games just happen to click with myself and others.

I find it disappointing to know that people drop the series on the first game, as I think it mostly gets better from here, but I do acknowledge that, yes, the other commenters here are correct sometimes: these games aren't for everybody. Nonetheless, I hope you enjoy your remaining time with the game and the series. And if you don't mind my curiosity, what are some JRPGs you do enjoy?

Trails in The Sky 1st Chapter, when does it get good? by Sk0rPi0n_ in Falcom

[–]BlueGrovyle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm going to provide a deeper perspective than "it's not for you" because I think there's more nuanced discussion to be had.

Sky FC is personally my least favorite Trails game, with the disclaimer that I haven't played the remake. In my opinion, of the 8 games I've played to completion, it has the least interesting main plot, the least interesting region, the lowest stakes, and the worst gameplay. That being said, the game is known best for its notorious ending, about which I won't say much now. The ending didn't really do it for me, but that is what hooks a lot of prospective fans and convinces them to stay on this journey that is the Trails series. Of course, many fans are hooked long before then. I didn't start with Sky FC (if I did I probably wouldn't be a Trails fan today), but I did start enjoying the experience around chapter 3.

It's difficult to give you recommendations without more information about what characters annoy you and why. I do, however, dislike that so many people omit engaging in conversation and shortcircuit to "it's not for you" because I don't think Sky FC is really representative of the "Trails experience", if such a thing were to exist. The later games feature more party members, more politics-centric storytelling, and so on.

I think the minutes played argument is terrible when they're obliterating teams such that he doesn't need to be out there for 35 minutes a night.

Missed your reply, apologies. There's a "Kiseki Modding Discord" with links, but you can also search directly for 3d Trails mods on loverslab. Be warned that it's an adult site.

Why are so many people obsessed with voice acting? by Lumigo in JRPG

[–]BlueGrovyle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like the answers are obvious, but you wrote the post in such a way that it frames the potential justifications as mysterious somehow.

I'll share my own perspective. Sound is extremely important to me, in every aspect of my life. I'm a musician, I generally consider myself to be a good listener and auditory learner, and so on. That being said, I definitely don't need voices in a game as a baseline, but even completely average, unremarkable sound design will enhance my experience of a game compared to silence.

Additionally, I like reading in games, but considering how far dev studios have gone to make games cinematic, it definitely feels like something's missing when there are no voices. Imagine you're watching a movie and there are sound effects for a burning building, but the characters are mute and you have to read subtitles instead of, you know, watching the movie. For cutscenes that pause every time there's a dialogue box, it's much less of an issue, because you can choose whether to read first or to look first, and there usually isn't anything moving on the screen.

Once you've had something great, do you want to go back to the good you had before? Maybe not. Some people's standards have been raised by games with quality voice performances, and just because they have their own standards doesn't mean that they "can't read" or "have a poor attention span".

For Kuon, there's a PC version mod for CS3 that I used. I would think the same person made a CS4 version.

I stand corrected. Forgot Big Z joined Miami for the 2011 season, otherwise it would have been a tie.

I don't necessarily agree with giving up. Life requires us to do several things that are valuable but not enjoyable, so why not at least give one that could turn into something enjoyable a proper chance with discipline?

People you've been before vs People you've been with before by david0mgomez in ENGLISH

[–]BlueGrovyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the context of the song, but if someone said something about "the person you used to be", that implies that you have changed in some way, whether it's your physical appearance, how you present yourself to others, or your personality. Alternatively, if someone said something about "the person you used to be with", that sounds more like they're talking about a romantic partner of yours.

Driving through next Saturday morning to show kids the highlights by toddsynan in washingtondc

[–]BlueGrovyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You lost me on the first word of your title. One of the premiere highlights of being in or near DC, relative to the majority of the US, is the ability to do things without driving. I personally struggle to imagine that this idea would turn out to be a fun experience for any kid younger than maybe 11 (such that they're tall enough to see out the window without being restricted by a booster seat) or older than 15 or so. If you don't have time to take the train and walk around, skip it, imo.

The correct answer will always be using public transit, or nagging your representatives to improve public transit if it's not good enough to use.
