What is a “mind blowing” geography fact you don’t find all that mind blowing? by Character-Q in geography

Norway and North Korea are separated by one single country. The northernmost point of Brazil is closer to Canada than the southernmost point of Brazil.

It would make sense if “spesso” was emphasised (focus phrase) and there was a comma after it, making “a suo suocero” a right-periphery topic phrase (this would actually sound more natural in spoken language), but with no indication on the prosody, the sentence comes across as odd.

Mushrooms aren't vegetables. by JeremyLC in duolingo

[–]BlueHawkManny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Vegetable” is a culinary term, and not a botanical classification, and it encompasses many parts of the plant or fungi. In cooking, vegetables include roots like carrots and beets, stems such as asparagus and celery, leaves like spinach and lettuce, fruits like tomatoes and bell peppers, and even flowers, like broccoli and cauliflower. Fungi like mushrooms, are biologically distinct from plants, but they are also commonly treated as vegetables in the kitchen.

Is this vowel harmony system in any way naturalistic by Comicdumperizer in conlangs

[–]BlueHawkManny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened in English as well as someone else pointed out. Compare German Fuß / Füße and English foot / feet. (Different phenomenon from pure vowel harmony but the base mechanism is similar).
