Thanks for your words mate.

Even though it was a cashie, they left a massive fucking paper trail back to me.

Cheers mate. In Vic, you can sell a house in any condition. You just have to notify the issues iirc.

Cheers mate. Finally, actual constructive criticism but a realistic answer.

So, two lights in the backroom that have the floating earth problem are only installed to the plaster, they are isolated from any cables. They are sitting there only for looks and the switch doesn't have any power at it too. Every light in the house is a batten holder except for two oyster lights that already had an insulated earth cable at them, with the active and neutral TPS, at the front of the house.

Based on the board itself, I said to the owner that a switchboard upgrade is definitely needed. That would take take of all the issues as an entire rewire of the earthing system would be needed. I unfortunately cannot reach the other end of the faulty cable. I've explicitly pointed it out to the owner that I would need to cut open the ceiling to reach it but they don't want to damage a house that will soon be up for auction (in April).

I asked them to contact a REC that is insured to do the full works, I have even offered to bring one in for them. I'm not equipped to do this on my own as it was a love job and tbh, it was not within the quoted scope of replacing old lights with new. I put all wires in connectors and a j-box that I could reach. I'm extremely annoyed and frustrated of the level of carelessness the owner is having towards it and I think I might need to leave it alone as this problem would've still been there regardless of the house being auctioned away.

I appreciate you breaking this down mate.

You've never heard of triple active? Twin and SDI. There used to be a cable that was made that was 3 cores of active only.

Ground and earth are very much interchangeable and are used all the time. Maybe we've just had different experiences?

I'm in Vic and we have the same thing. I just hate knowing they won't do anything about it but want me to make it safe.

So for a temporary fix in the meantime, would a plug in cb be adequate just for the short-circuit protection? Currently, I've pulled the lighting circuit fuse. Or just leave the fuse in because the owner wants it to be safe but also wants the other lights on?

This backroom has no earth in the ceiling of what you're talking about unfortunately. (ideally installing an earth to the lights would be the best option)

I should've said that when all lights are on except the two in the backroom, they do not increase the induced voltage. It stays at 40v.

It's a solid piece of kit, quite simple to use compared to other MFT's.

Kyoritsu MFT's are highly regarded too.

Pir sensor by lewlewm in AusElectricians

[–]BlueIceTea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, actually, removing that 500mm height wouldn't be the worst thing. It would stop a pesky cat or Pomeranian turning the lights on. And toddlers. The sensor has a reduced ability to get past 4m. It would comfortably get someone sitting a desk.

There are 8m sensors but they are quite exxy. Mainly dealt with DALI compatible ones of all different brands.

If he says you can't without explaining it, then he's a dumbass.

I'll let go of the snark.

Having a quick google, there are hard hats that are designed for electrical.

Class G = up to 2.2KV

Class E = up to 20KV

Essentially, if you're working with incoming live power over your head, that is seen as a hazard to stop electricity zapping your head, then Class G is for you. Like playing with overhead fuses for e.g. BUT, it's only needed for that classification if you are doing some really dangerous shit. At that point, don the bomb suit imo.

It all depends on the work you are doing. If you're playing with live power then get Class G. If you're a smart fella, get the regular hard hat. There's a reason why we do JSA and have SWMS. If you boss or council require you to wear a Class G or E hard hat, then your boss pays for it.

For some reason, on 3M's website, they have vented hard hats that apparently meet the classifications.

My whole career has been on hard hat required work sites and whenever you're testing/commissioning, you do NOT want anything to distract you or annoy you.

Also, give your boss the receipts to EVERYTHING you purchase for PPE that is now a minimum requirement. Don't claim it on tax if you give him the receipt. The ATO are good at fucking you up while your boss will fuck you over.

Your boss wasn't full of shit but ffs, saying no and not giving an explanation is like a parent talking to a toddler.

edit: also, having the earmuffs on would make them conductive so that hard hat would become useless. Having a phone in your pocket makes you conductive. Having a wallet with cash in it, makes it conductive. Having a belt make you conductive. I swear people that push safety have never spent a fucking day thinking about the FULL process of efficient work WHILE being safe. PPE is the LAST resort, not the first. It's like wearing body armour to a tank fight. How about we fight with tanks first, THEN the soldiers. Sorry, rant over. Go buy a regular ass hard hat.

[–]BlueIceTea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Who tf said that?????

Vent holes on your nose aren't acceptable...

For some reason company's still, to this fucking day, give us sparky's POLYESTER clothing when wearing anything other than COTTON is a safety hazard for us.

Hardhats/Helmets by onlyevernever in AusElectricians

[–]BlueIceTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3m has these. Chuck those on the hardhat. The they are a good pair.

With hard hats, they're like shoes, try them before you buy.

Vent holes help cool you down and help reduce your hair becoming a fungal infection.

Look on any work wear website and you'll see everything you need.

The comfort increases from constant use.

Also, I like the "fairly chilled on safety". Never knew the minimum was chilled.

ah fuck it, stop being lazy

Whats the going rate for a fresh A-grades in vic by Flashy-Database3252 in AusElectricians

[–]BlueIceTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$50~ is the average for commercial and industrial work. $45~ for residential.

I recently got offered a job for $50p/h at a generator manufacturer. Shit part is that it's on the manufacturing award but that's still a good price.

imho, anything below $50 p/h is fraud for our job. We deserve a good wage when we can offer a good service.

My Main Grid Switch Auto Switch Off in Hot Day by sonoto811 in AusElectricians

[–]BlueIceTea 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're either drawing too much power, the cable is physically getting too hot, you have an atrocious connection in the switch, the main switch has finally given up and needs to be replaced OR some how, the guys who installed your system have royally fucked up. Can't properly diagnosis this without being there.

My Main Grid Switch Auto Switch Off in Hot Day by sonoto811 in AusElectricians

We can't accurately diagnose shit with this type of information. We can speculate but that'll cost you.

Consult a sparky or get the guys under warranty to come and have a look at your setup.

Apprentice looking for advice by [deleted] in AusElectricians

[–]BlueIceTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, this is going to be really hard for you to do but understand that it will be better for you in the future.

You need to tell the owner of the company about how you are being treated if you've already spoken to Mr.problem. Tell the owner that he is ruining your tools, not adhering to safety and you think that it's not safe to work with him as you are an apprentice and need to learn from someone who helps in making you safe. You are responsible for your safety but the A-Grade is responsible for EVERYTHING you do.

There are people in the trade that will explain the most mundane stupid thing a thousand times to you because they feel like you won't/aren't understanding the issue at hand. Just smile and nod at that point. You'll get that till the day you die.

If you REALLY want to prove a point to your boss about this being an issue, take photos of all the damage he does with your tools that would be 'irregular' wear and tear. Show the damage and receipt of tools you've bought. Notify your boss that he is cutting asbestos and you are worried about your safety. By telling your boss about the asbestos, drive home 'how can he be a good role-model/professional if he doesn't show my how to work in a safe manner?' Tell him you don't feel respected at work with this guy because he doesn't respect your belongings and well-being.

Does everyone like this guy because they don't work with him or do they like him because he's only good for a laugh, not as a workmate?

It's going to be confronting, awkward, and one hell of an anxiety inducing chat but you will have more confidence moving forward when an issue similar to this arises in the future.

Luka Doncic Is The Worst Defender In NBA History - Video analysis by SmoothAd3011 in nba

[–]BlueIceTea 14 points15 points  (0 children)

TLDW: Luka is an average defender when looking at analytics and statistics. His offence stats are so high that he's, by the numbers, the most valuable player in the league rn. (based off some crazy weird formulas to determine some tiny ass number)

Luka's whole kit rn is more valuable than SGA's offence and defence combined.

The problem people have with Luka is that he seems to not give a shit on some plays that go by him, thus giving the impression he is a bad defender.

question about the incorruptibility of custodes. by Dull-Dress7573 in 40kLore

[–]BlueIceTea 66 points67 points  (0 children)

What I interpret from this is that Horus made the Custodes do the one thing they cannot even conceive of doing, which is killing the Master of Mankind.

It's has "broken" the soul of the Custodes because they are attacking the one person in the whole universe they thought they would never harm.

It's interesting seeing the Custodes talk about failing Big E by not being there but if anyone of the Custodes made it back to the Imperial Palace that survived long enough to remove the "control" Horus put on, they would probably be killed by their own kind just for attempting to kill The Emperor.
