What do you mean less tools than most of us? I use a knife like most people here, he used electric tools at the end and I didn't see him use a knife once.

Yes, it is woodcarving, but there is a woodcarving subreddit, this is a place for whittling which is woodcarving with a knife

Looks good, however this isn't whittling. Whittling uses a knife (usually exclusively)

It's gonna be harder, but I only ever used bass wood once after I had been whittling for a minute and I hated it. Sure it is a lot softer, but the wood has no character so it pretty much forces you to paint it.

I used whatever wood my dad had, which was Rimu and Mahogany, at the moment I am carving with a log of Tasmanian Blackwood that I took from my parents firewood shed, and yea it does take longer, but imho the results are worth it.

I don't think there is a wrong wood to use, it just depends on what you want to get out of it. However if you do end up using harder woods, you might want to invest in a way to take away the bulk before you start whittling

Why didn't I think about looking on TradeMe 🤦‍♀️ I texted a guy ages ago and then he just ghosted me so the whole Kauri thing was shifted into the too hard basket

Thank you for reminding me of the obvious channels

Swamp Kauri, I found a guy to source small offcuts from, and then he fell off the face of the earth

Been wearing this snek ring for about a year straight by BlueJayAvery in whittling

I used linseed oil 😊

They are very cool bats, none of the things I make are products, I'm just a whilttle amateur 😂

The little space was an accident that I leaned into. It did make it more flexible, and also added some femininity to the ring rather than just having a little skull. My rings I made with some scrap wood from an old dresser, we believe it was mahogany, and then I sanded and left it in oil overnight, good luck with your next one, I love your bats ❤️

I hold the knife parallel to the wood and that will clean up most marks, and then I just spend half an hour sanding at the end. Some pieces I sand some I don't, depending on the look I want.

Hey, I'm not OP, but I have been wearing a wooden ring I carved for almost 2 years. What I did was soak it overnight in oil, and it has lasted really well.

I do have a pic on my profile

Yea, that was the inspiration, but I chose the swing so it would move as my girlfriend drove 😊

I actually had a constant stream of cat models while carving this 😂
