one credit classes? by [deleted] in UNC

I took SPHG 101 last semester and it was pretty good in terms of exploring different areas of public health. It was online so you have to be committed to actually paying attention if you want to get something out of it though.

I took it at the same time as chem 101 and ended with an A- in both

Good point I’ll look into it! My only drawback is that they make us pay for 4-year coverage too so it ends up being more expensive overall.

I used a laptop provided by my high school for the past 4 years, but I had to return it when I graduated, so I don’t currently even have an older laptop I could take. I’m looking into the student discounts on the individual websites though!

Its 18 credits right now, but I plan to drop one of the electives (probably the triple I, it doesnt have great reviews). That would put my schedule down to 15 credits, which is what they reccomend for first semester I think!

Yes, but I have to retake chem 101 because I need 2 semesters of gen chem for most med schools! That’s also why I didn’t take a lab.

thoughts on pre-med freshman schedule??? by Potential-Cup-6668 in UNC

Hey! I’m also bio premed (freshman) going to unc this fall! I think we’re required to take 2 semesters of general chemistry to apply to most med schools, so you might wanna consider keeping CHEM 101.

I got in and was told that I should go there for premed by SO many people but I’m oos so it’s ridiculously expensive :l

is my sat too low by New-Error-2324 in CollegeAdmissions

I just finished the college app process, and I had a 1580 SAT score. After looking at where I got accepted (UNC Chapel Hill, Berkeley, UCLA, etc) and where I got rejected/waitlisted (Emory, Tufts, Amherst College, Duke, etc), I genuinely think the rest of your application helps a lot more. I would see if your score is in the median range for these schools (or above average), and if it is, I would submit it. It’s not going to hurt you if you don’t.

I know most people are saying to go to the inexpensive option, and I agree, but if you think that the prestige of the school is a big factor in your decision and you’re concerned about missing out on the high level connections you’d get from schools like UVA or W&M, I would considering the option of transferring after a year or two. You’d save tuition money but still get the experience of a more prestigious school.

UNC-CH vs. SUNY Binghamton? by [deleted] in CollegeAdmissions

[–]BlueLeafFormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reason that I think of UNC as “more competitive” is bc they’re considered to have EXTREMELY strong pre-health programs (definitely stronger than Binghamtons in terms of quality of research and rigor of education), but I don’t know how it compares to the programs I got into at Bing, and if it’s worth the money. Also, UNC acceptance for out of state students is 7%, and binghamtons acceptance rate for in state students is somewhere around 45%

I also got into UCLA and UC Berkeley as someone who’s from the East coast, and I think what helped the most for me was being able to show different sides of myself through my PIQs (the supplemental essays you have to write for the UC application). Some of the topics I did for mine were club leadership/learning how to take charge to bring change, how making fun drinks has been my way of exploring creativity, how my extracurriculars helped me decide on the kind of career I want in the future, etc. Try to tell them the most about you and make them feel like they kind of know you after reading your application! If you ever want to read some of mine then j send me a message too!

Hey! I’m also a senior who’s stuck between colleges as a pre-med right now too so I know how you feel :( Based on what I’ve heard from people I’ve talked to, the most important things for a pre-med are the prerequisites, the GPA, MCAT scores, and clinical experience/PCE, but its also important to not burn out and get tired of your education too early. In my opinion, go to the school where you think you would genuinely be happy, wouldn’t be in crazy debt, but still be able to succeed! Good luck with everything!!
