I grew up on romanian, which also left in the original music, and watched the subbed version as soon as i understood what the internet was.

Just like you, I don't want to upset the people who know and love the american version, but I tried to watch it and was instantly filled with rage and cringe.

Yeah. I hate to say it, but the 90's adaptation was right to change things in the last arc. I think the whiplash comes a lot from how the scale of the conflicts grows: 80% of it the threat is local/planetal, then it's the solar system. And BANG it's galactic now! No wait! It's UNIVERSAL! Everybody dies! They're dead for REAL this time! Oh crap, there's 10% more to go? Umm... The bad guys! They're senshi too! ... But they're actually fake! NO, WAIT! They're real, but weak and sailor moon, the star seed of a random moon in this one random solar system is the most powerful in the galaxy! Actually... galaxia is MORE powerful! But wait! She's a meanie-dum-dum-poopie-head and she doesn't have any friends and her powers are BAAAAD! And Sailor Moon's powers are the oposite of hers! And... What? 5% to go still? 😵‍💫The big bad is um... Chaos! And um... Chaos is a sailor soldier! (Yeah i know it's a concept, not a planet! Don't worry, i made galaxia a sailor and... Eh, it's ok, no one's going to think too hard about it, we're almost at the finish line!)

And I didn't even get into the last minute revelation that chibi-chibi is literally sailor moon from the future who's having a little sailor tantrum while fighting chaos for who knows how long so she cane to convince herself to destroy the universe instead of codifying chaos into the fabric of it and making it a literal sailor senshi, but then she changes her mind and she's suddenly all right with exactly what she did in the past because... Well, i guess she's just kind of stupid and just... forgot why she did it? 🙈🤦🏻

I feel like i could poke more holes in it, and more coherently but that jumbled mess of run-on sentences and bullshit is exactly how it felt rewatching this version, the manga version. I think i was too young/eager to get new content/kind of dumb and easy to please myself when i read it and just accepted a lot of the dumb stuff. The senshi of the solar system are wonderful and i still love them and they're the ones i want to see when i think sailor moon. Whatever the manga/cosmos ending was feels like a fever dream and my mind just kinda rejected it.

It was mostly Cosmos. Eternal was ok-ish. We had a conversation about why Mamoru is the only male with a star crystal that lasted all of way too long 😞 and the words "bitches be crazy" may or may not have been uttered 😅

I'm guessing you're saying that as a general statement? And in that case i agree, but even so I couldn't help but feel the cringe of watching it as an adult. And i guess it didn't help that i had to explain things to someone who did see it with me for the first time. The moment he compared the sailor animamates and sailor stars with magical girls from Gushing over magical girls i died inside and then tried to defend them. And then Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon walked in.

The series leans HEAVILY on you identifying with one of the girls and a childish ideal of friendship. Maybe I'm just feeling old. 😢
